Alex had a tough week this week and couldn't get this week's roundup in until today. So I'm going to just post it here quickly...

Four receptions for 122 yards and two touchdowns were a grand send-off for wide receiver Berkeley Holman's final regular season game at Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco (9-2, 4-1). They dominated Orange (Calif.) Lutheran 47-28 and begin the CIF Southern playoffs against Upland. Right now, St. John Bosco's Twittter feed declares that Bosco has the “toughest bracket to face”. At the moment, it seems Upland will face the stiffer challenge: SJB is not just a top ten organization in the state of California; they're also fourth-ranked nationwide.

With three tackles and a sack for a loss of three yards, defensive end Earnest Brown and Denton (Tex.) Ryan (10-0, 6-0) had a fine time with a 38-14 win over Wichita Falls Rider. That's was the end of of the Ryan's regular season. They began their playoff hunt in District 5 – 5A last night with a 54-14 win against Fort Worth Brewer. It was short work: the Ryan Raiders scored 47 unanswered points in the first three quarters. Denton Ryan will face the winner of the Richland vs. Ft. Worth South Hills.

Nearby, defensive back Bryce Jackson and Denton (Tex.) Guyer (8-2, 6-1) took a 30-10 win over Auston Anderson's former school, Plano West. Jackson and his Guyer teammates advance to the District 6 – 6A playoffs against Trophy Club (Tex.) Byron Nelson. The Byron Nelson Bobcats (4-6, 4-3) have beaten Euless Trinity this season, which is no small accomplishment despite Guyer's superior record. Denton Guyer is at a disadvantage, though. They lost of one of their top players (I promise I am not making this up) when he dislocated an elbow while running through the cheerleading squad's paper sign before last week's game.

Quarterback Andrew Marty went 12-for-18 passing for 218 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions, demolishing Chillicothe (Ohio) Unioto 56-0. Marty also carried the ball four times for 27 yards and no sacks. His Cincinnati (Ohio) Wyoming (11-0, 7-0) Cowboys are in the OHSAA Division IV playoffs and will see Germantown Valley View next. This is no pushover. Valley View (10-1, 5-1) took apart an excellent Waverly team by a final of 34-0 in their last outing.

Running back Kyric McGowan had eight receptions for 76 yards, then added a key block as quarterback Zeke Cobb carried the ball for an 82-yard rushing touchdown for the Dalton (Ga.) Catamounts (10-0, 7-0). For all the dazzling plays, Dalton needed to foil a two-point conversion with only 91 seconds left in regulation to defeat Acworth Allatoona and live another week. Class A – 6A playoffs begin with Winder (Ga.) Winder-Barron.

Athlete J.R. Pace caught five passes for 60 yards as College Park (Ga.) Woodward Academy (9-1, 6-0) rolled past Atlanta Druid Hills by a total of 35-6. Starting quarterback (and Oklahoma State commit) Ryan Glover continues to be the straw that stirs the drink for Woodward Academy. Now Woodward begins their playoff campaign in Georgia Class 4A against Thomaston Upson-Lee (6-4, 3-2). Upson-Lee is still stinging from a 43-33 loss to Griffin (Ga.) Spalding to end their regular season.

Two tackles and two assists were enough for future NU safety Austin Hiller of Austin (Tex.) Lake Travis (9-1, 6-0). They finished their regular season with a 55-0 win over Austin Vandegrift. Lake Travis begins their playoff rush against San Antonio Madison. Apparently, that's a pretty soft path towards winning West Texas high school football.

No one will criticize defensive end Sam Miller for getting just two tackles and one assist, not forgetting the sack for a one-yard loss, as Houston (Tex.) Stratford (7-3, 5-2) got a 10-7 win over the Klein Bearkats. It finished their regular season and now they start the playoffs against Houston Westfield. Westfield's Mustangs are 7-3 overall but 7-0 in conference. One of their few losses came to 28-27 to the tough Euless Trinity Trojans.

Defensive tackle Ethan Wiederkehr and Shoreham (N.Y.) Shoreham-Wading River (7-2, 6-2) nailed a 35-7 win over the Hampton Bays Baymen last week. Check of two of the touchdowns via YouTube. Next, the S-WR Wildcats face Miller Place (also 7-2, 6-2) in the second round of the playoffs. These two teams know each other well: Shoreham-Wading River beat them 27-14 back in mid-October. They've also had common opponents, not least of which is the Hampton Bays team that S-WR defeated in the first round of the playoffs and Miller Place defeated 45-2 way back on September 9th.

Avon Lake got their revenge over center Sam Gerak and his Avon (Ohio) Eagles. It was a late game interception that felled one of the best teams in the state of Ohio. The Eagles had beaten the Avon Lake Shoremen 31-7 the second week of the season, but the first round of the playoffs saw the Eagles ushered out of the OHSAA Division II Region 6 by a score of 28-27.

Wide receiver Jace James and Carol Stream (Ill.) Glenbard North (8-3) were knocked out of the Illinois Class 7A playoffs with three seconds left in regulation. A 23-yard touchdown pass gave East St. Louis the 32-28 win. East St. Louis star (and Mizzou commit) Jeff Thomas atoned for two fumbles deep in Glenbard North territory by catching the game-winner.

Linebacker Blake Gallagher and Needham (Mass.) St. Sebastian's Country Day (2-5, 1-5) fell by a score of 34-14 to Sudbury's Buckingham Browne & Nichols, alma mater of NU right tackle Eric Olson. St. Sebastian's Saturday game against Braintree Thayer Academy will have one virtue: one of them is likely to win. The two teams have combined for nine losses in a row and neither seems poised for any future in the Massachusetts Independent School League postseason.

#72 Rashawn Slater was worthy of a few video highlights for Sugar Land (Tex.) Clements (1-9, 0-7). Sadly, they came in a 44-7 loss to Fort Bend Dulles. Viewers can see he has the techniques; we all know he'll make a good showing at the next level.

It was an ugly, mistake-filled game, but placekicker Charlie Kuhbander managed two extra point kicks. Still, his Springboro (Ohio) Panthers (8-4, 2-1) fell by the wayside of OHSAA Division I in a 35-14 loss. Cincinnati Colerain, considered the top team in Ohio high school football by the Associated Press, took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back even though they committed 12 penalties for 110 yards.

WAITING FOR COLLEGE:

Cornerback Cameron Ruiz of Lake Villa (Ill.) Lakes Community.

Defensive end Trevor Kent of Pittsburg (Kan.).

OUT FOR THE SEASON:

Outside linebacker Peter McIntyre's Toledo (Ohio) St. John Jesuit team (6-4, 3-4) lost to Toledo Whitmer by a score of 41-7. McIntyre is out with a broken leg.

Superback Trey Pugh's Plain City (Ohio) Jonathan Alder (9-2, 6-1) lost their playoff opener to Columbus Bishop Hartley 35-21. Pugh is out with a shoulder injury.
