Steve Fridley a.k.a "Alan Smithee", passed away suddenly on February 9th. Steve was a wonderful friend and a big NU fan who I met through these boards. I have known Steve's father since grade school from his teaching music in the Wheaton School system. I didn't meet Steve until 2005 when I started going to NU games with my buddy, Jerry. I would stay at his house and crash on his couch, hoping his cats or dogs wouldn't attack me at night. Steve was a political history major who loved to discuss politics when not discussing NU football and basketball. The last time I talked with Smithee, he was telling me about the surprising basketball team. I wish he'd seen the last homestand!

I'm so sad to hear this. I sat directly across from him at the Sun Bowl purple party. He was perhaps the wittiest poster here (between Pat Ryan and him, they donated hundreds of millions of dollars to our athletics programs!).

Our board has lost some legends recently. Thank you for sharing. This is tough.

Damn. Can't believe this. He's too young to be gone. So sorry to hear this awful news.

Before I left Carol Stream in 2010 for the Southwest, Steve and I hung out and went to DuPage Valley high school games regularly in 2008 and 2009. We met through this board - in fact, I believe Turk introduced us either in Kenosha or somewhere else... we went to "scout" Evan Watkins, Mike Trumpy, and enjoyed great DVC tilts. I remember we slightly disagreed and argued about Watkins potential as a Big Ten QB - but that was the fun part of hanging out and talking NU football with Smithee.

He was a blast to go watch games with and pig out at one of our favorite hot dog stands before the game. Haven't seen Smithee in over a decade now, but... this hurts. He's just too young to be gone, had so much good living still ahead of him. Good people, good dude. Great purple fan. Can't believe he's gone.

I'm surprised it wasn't posted here by someone. It's been 15 days. I didn't believe a Facebook note I received from his sister whose name I didn't recognize. I thought someone was pranking me. I checked for an obituary, there wasn't any that I could find. Then I checked further back on his Facebook page and sadly found out it's true.

Glades et Al - with the passing of Far East Wildcat (a.k.a. FEW) over a year+ ago, then FlaAlum in the last several months and now Smithee, truly a golden page within the book of NU Athletics Fans-Supporters has been turned. I am extremely saddened to hear this news. I cannot emphasize how much my life has been exceedingly blessed with the honor of having known these steadfast, ever-loyal giants among those who call themselves card-carrying members of Wildcat Nation. It's very difficult to put my many fond memories into written words recalling the myriad enjoyable times I've shared with you, Turk, Fla, FEW and Smithee over the last four decades. Thanks for posting this thread. Bless You and keep yourself healthy sir...

Terrible, terrible news. Thanks for sharing @Gladeskat. Not sure how we missed this. Steve was such a kind and gentle soul. I had the pleasure of interacting with him quite a bit over the years at a variety of pregame tailgates, Purple Parties and here on WR. Such a likeable guy and such a devoted fan of NU. It’s a shame he missed that Purdue game (although I’m sure he was watching from above). I’ll miss his witty posts and positive demeanor. Nothing brought Steve more happiness than his dogs and Cats. 😢

R.I.P. @Alan Smithee you will be missed. 🙏🙏🙏

Thanks for sharing Glades. I always enjoyed Steve. Loved his unique wit and was always happy to see him at the tailgates in the West Lot. A great example of what makes this little community of ours so special.

This is just terrible news. Smithee was one of the pillars of this board for many years, long before I arrived. I met him many times over the years, but had not seen him in a while. He was such a nice guy and kind-hearted soul, a guy who was always happy to see you and made you feel better when you saw him. And funny. As anyone who read his posts can attest, Steve had a sharp sense of humor.

No one was a bigger Cats fan than Steve. He bled Purple. Raise a glass to Smithee, wherever you are. He’ll be missed.

I’m so saddened to hear this. Smithee was always one of my favorites here. He was a great fan and a lot of fun. I will miss him on these boards tremendously.

They and I love you as well, Waterboy.

Gone but not forgotten. I always enjoyed his contributions here. A true fan with great humor.

This is tragic news. He was an integral part of our tailgate for many years. He even went with us to “scout” Matt Alviti at a Maine South HS game. A true gentleman with unique wit. He will be missed.

Peace to his Memory
ubercat, I always enjoyed hanging out with you, Smithee, Turk, Waterboy and many others in the West Lot prior to football games. Occasionally, Glades and FloridAlum would j join us as well. One of my fondest memories was the time you and Smithee drove to Erie, stayed overnight at our house, and traveled the next day to the NU vs. PSU game. Great fun!.

Very sad indeed. Many may not know the origins behind his name…when I learned it I determined there would never be a better board name.

RIP Steve.

Thanks for sharing that reference, Villox. I remember Steve explained the meaning of his moniker to me once, but now that I read it in full detail, it just resonates again with Steve's great, unique wit and truly enjoyable sense of humor.

What a tragic shame.

But like the other legends, they will not be forgotten.

59 is far too young to go...I met Steve while I was still an NU student and had started contributing to the board, and would run into him at any number of tailgates over the years. I didn't know him well, but he would always engage me in a friendly conversation about the 'Cats, and I enjoyed his sense of humor. He will be missed.

I'm reposting the only obituary I could find, from a Wheaton high schools facebook group:

Steve Fridley, aged 59, a resident of Wheaton, passed away suddenly on Thursday, February 9, 2023. He was born June 25, 1963 in Geneva, IL. He was a devoted son, dedicated uncle, loyal friend, and committed dog dad. He will be dearly missed.

Steve grew up in Wheaton where he attended Lowell, Edison and Wheaton Central High School. As a kid on long summer days or after school you could find Steve climbing to the tops of trees or the water tower, riding his classic 70s chopper to the local 7-11 or G&G Pharmacy for a slurpee, playing a pickup game of ball with friends, practicing his trumpet, listening to records, reading piles of books or watching Cubs games. He cherished and maintained lifelong relationships with many school friends and had gotten together with old friends just days before he passed.

He graduated from Northwestern University, where he majored in Political Science and became a diehard NU Wildcat sports fan. He attended countless basketball and football games and tailgate parties with friends, family and alumni. He moderated a number of fan boards and relished the analysis, camaraderie and lively exchanges with other fans.

After college he worked on a variety of political campaigns, then channeled his love for books into a career managing several B. Dalton and Barnes & Noble book store locations in and around Chicago. Later, he worked as an Accreditation Specialist and then as the Executive Director for the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA). He enjoyed the years he spent living in Lincoln Park and Andersonville in Chicago.

Steve made friends at each stop along the way, from the campaigns to Michigan Avenue to Ryan Field to the neighborhood YMCA and his home on Indiana Street. In recent years, the Midwest Disc Dog Club became another social center for him. There, his Australian Kelpie, Taz, took Steve to a number of Disc Dog competitions and generously let Steve share in the glory of his accomplishments. On Indiana street neighbors knew they could count on Steve to lend a hand with whatever was needed - dog sitting, lawn mowing or snow blowing if someone was ill, setting up tables for the 4th of July block party, or chatting around the firepit on a cool fall evening.

Over the years, Steve also enjoyed his experiences skydiving, hiking in the mountains, and traveling to Europe a number of times. He adopted 6 pets including cats Squeak, Shifty, Fitz & Willie, and his two beloved dog boys, Taz, and a Border Collie he named Flick. He is survived by his parents Daniel and Sandra Fridley; his sisters Debbie (the late Mark) Nerad and Sara (John) Hellman; his nieces and nephews: Alex (Shea) Nerad, Chris (Sara) Nerad, Rachel (Jake) Markum, Emilie Nerad, and Jericho Hellman; his grandnieces and grandnephews: Bryce, Charlie Beth, Soren, Graham, Ellie and Wade. He is also survived by his beloved canine companions, Taz & Flick.

I didn’t realize until today that we were in the same graduating class. It is likely that we had classes together given his major. Gone way too soon.

Oh man, such truly sad news. Florida, followed by Smithee...

I never got the chance to meet Smithee in person, but over my 20+ years on this board I really enjoyed his contributions, observations, and scary-smart wit. I will miss it all. My heartfelt condolences to Steve's family, friends, and fur buddies.

Thank you, Cappy, for sharing Steve's obit.

Like many others, I got to meet Steve as we scouted incoming NU recruits in the Wheaton area, most recently Clayton Thorson and Justin Jackson. You are already missed, Steve.

I did not know Steve well, but did spend some time with him in pre game festivities in the west lot. I remember Steve as a very bright guy and gentle soul, with a great sense of humor.

At 84, starting to feel like an endangered species with all these young people passing.

Aw man. I’m sorry to hear this. I met him at the 2021 MSU game at Uber’s tailgate and he was a really nice, funny, and pleasant guy - just like his many posts over the years.

He and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers. The board lost a great poster. RIP.

I’ve been on the board a long time, originally as a lurker. Steve/Smithee was always one of my favorites in the early days. Between Smithee, Floridalum and others from that time, I knew if I needed a hilarious pick-me-up, the Rivals board would take care of it.

I met Smithee several times through the Uber tent. Up until last year, I think he wore the same “lucky” tattered sweatshirt that had to be 25 years old. He always took in stride the crap I gave him for that sweatshirt. He was always a positive presence with a sharp sense of humor even in recent times and he will be sorely missed. Not sure if Pat Ryan will be kicking up the donation after the loss of his side car. Perhaps this warrants a $1 donation to the stadium fund from every board member! RIP.

Steve (Smithee) was truly an amazing fan and a better person and friend to all.

I never really was able to talk with him and thank him for his concerns regarding my health issue(s) back in September 2022 when I was hospitalized right before the first home game other then in passing.

Thank you Smithee for all the great laughs and conversations. RIP my friend

At 80, I know exactly what you mean. We need to count our blessings every day Wave. Actually, I'm 3 days shy of 80, so a young snot by your standards!

Damn what a loss for all of us. He was a good man and one of the OG’s around here. He always was kind both in person and on the message boards. Damn…..
I traded some political barbs with him over the years, but it takes two to tango. He would stand his ground, which I respect. As I said, I sat right across from him at the purple party in El Paso and there were no hard feelings or grudges. But we had a few harsh interactions on the Rant Board after that, so he largely abandoned the Rant Board sometime in the 2010s to avoid these kinds of interactions. I feel bad about it, because he was a passionate person and it's a loss for us if he became uncomfortable speaking his mind on certain things. I didn't always agree with him, but his was a valuable voice.

I met Smithee at Uber's years ago but have lost touch with almost everyone, since it has been difficult to get motivated to make the trip in recent years. I remember his subtle wit, but the old Uber crowd had a lot to offer and maybe I will renew my season tickets in hopes of seeing them again
Well, I hope you do! Are you at Long Cove to watch the NU ladies in the Darius Rucker?
