Northwestern is happy to pay and grease the wheels with city officials or politicians when needed just like anyone else.
My comment wasn't about NU's actions in needing to make a bribe, it was about the "thought" leaders of Evanston. You have to excuse me because I spent a lifetime building facilities and I view their construction, aging and destruction as part of the cycle of life. I still recall going to the first major building I managed construction of - light industrial - seeing it abandoned and eventually razed. In that case the product manufactured moved overseas, of course, and a 250k SF steel shell out in the middle of nowhere was only good for a bird roost.
I don't want to completely dismiss environmental impacts of construction - particularly the concerns in the manufacture of cement - but if that is the basis for replacing a 100 year, or whatever, building that has passed its shelf life, then Evanston leaders should give up buying new clothes and eating meat.
