A friend* of mine passed away far too soon, at the age of 40, of a sudden cardiac event, on Sunday. He was a wonderful leader in what many of you know to be a wonderful, strange, vibrant, hearty little corner of the world.

He was instrumental in the success of the Traverse City Film Festival, was a prominent actor and volunteer within the arts community, and was truly a connector: hipsters and squares and queers and jocks and drunks and grandparents and preschoolers and bartenders and jazz freaks and gamers and beach bums and artists and capitalists and everyone else gravitated to him, and he helped build unlikely friendships as a result. He and his wife also threw fantastic, creative parties (webstreaming them since at least 2007). In the online appreciations, I've found at least three people who directly credit him with their marriage - an introduction, an inspiration, an idea.

He leaves behind a wonderful wife, two wonderful girls, and a lapsed life insurance policy. He was an independent contractor and small business owner, she stayed home after the birth of child number two, and, as young, healthy people do, they never got around to it. Please consider donating to the family.

His death has hit me pretty hard. (Posting at 330 a.m.!) People this good shouldn't go this soon.

(*Disclosure: I haven't lived in Traverse for nine years, and haven't visited in six, so we've been totally out of contact, but he left an indelible mark. It's amazing to think but, 15 years ago, I probably wouldn't have even heard that this had happened. As it stands, I was grieving for him and his family and sharing stories and memories within hours.)

Thank you for reading. I promise, anything you are willing to part with would be greatly appreciated. The family has a wonderful support structure but a very challenging road ahead. I can't imagine what they're going through.

Will there be a Go Fund Me page? I'll donate.

Such a sad story. I have good memories of northern Michigan and a few summers working on Torch Lake. I was fortunate to be near the medical center one July when I suffered testicular torsion. That was so much fun! Traverse is a great community.

I will pass this along to my buddies up there.

@SciCat
Thanks for your generosity. I reached out to one of the people involved with setting up the donation page, and here was his response:

"The short answer for why not GoFundMe is that they keep a processing fee beyond just that of a credit card processing fee. The TC Film Fest is covering the cost of the credit card fees and is taking care of the administration of it so that the family is being cut checks nearly daily; this way they will all get the donations instead of just most.

I know that Megan appreciates the support of the community. Thanks so much for reaching out."

Please be comfortable that any donation is safe and will go to the right place.

I really appreciate yours, and anyone's, generosity.

(Re-reading - perhaps you were just looking for where to donate. Use the PayPal link at the bottom of the page.)
