Will Chris Collins stay at Northwestern?
There is a lot of smoke swirling around Chris Collins as a candidate for coaching jobs. We assess the situation.
Most likely. Can we expect all of this to be resulted within the next few days-week at most?
Collins’ teams have never accepted a postseason bid that wasn’t the NCAA Tournament. He probably wouldn't want to bother with the Crown if he's leaving. Just saying.
Has one been offered?Collins’ teams have never accepted a postseason bid that wasn’t the NCAA Tournament.
Not by the NIT. They have passed on the CBI before, which is understandable.Has one been offered?
Hope it’s just a leverage move for negotiating an extension at NU. Pay him his due — lots and long.![]()

Leaving now means our best ever recruiting class falls apart and we come to the cold realization than the Round of 32 at the NCAA's is our forever-ceiling as a program. A bitter pill indeed.
Anxiety is the residue of an impatient mind. We will have clarity soon enough. We need some new narratives to talk about that don't involve crushing anxiety about the coach or Nick or etc.
We would have. I think about it often lol. Would have been a 6. And a 3 is beatable. We’ve beaten the equivalent several times in Big Ten play (Purdue, MSU, Illinois, etc.).Barring a change in admission standards … though we could have made the second weekend last year with a healthy Berry and Nicholson imo.
To be fair, during that period it was Gragg that was the AD and hard to say he was a big fan of CCC. Plus other actions did not indicate he was at the top of the game. The extension was done after the first tourney run and it was one year later for the second and Gragg was sidelined so no one to push anything through. After this season was likely the first time it could be addressed by Jackson. That said, because of the injuries, it was a somewhat dissappoiting end, So while it likely should be done this offseason, hard to say whether it will beWhy is his contract only through 2028? Results from the last two seasons were great; I’d think he would’ve gotten extensions from that? Most Big Ten coaches have automatic extensions built in (e.g., get an extra year and $100k annual salary increase automaticallly triggered if a coach makes the sweet 16 or wins the conference). I’d think Collins would’ve at least triggered automatic extensions with an NCAAT berth?
It’s weird that his contract is down to 3 years remaining. That’s pretty unheard of in the big ten if a coach is successful and wanted.
Go look at the teams that have made Sweet 16 (or better) in recent years… St Peters, UMBC, FAU, SDSU, Florida Gulf Coast, Butler, many others. Any team in the field can make it to the second weekend.Barring a change in admission standards … though we could have made the second weekend last year with a healthy Berry and Nicholson imo.
It’s criminal that he doesn’t have 5+ years left on his deal. I’m sure that will be addressed promptly. That’s completely out of sync with the rest of the conference. I’m guessing in the next day or so, an extension will agreed and in place. To be fair, during that period it was Gragg that was the AD and hard to say he was a big fan of CCC. What he did this year despite the injuries is why he should be extended yesterday. He’s finally built the program/culture he wants at NU and is starting to recruit on a higher level. Seems like a no brainer unless he just doesn’t want to be hereTo be fair, during that period it was Gragg that was the AD and hard to say he was a big fan of CCC.
