Man, it did not take long to get the usual suspects right back into butt munch mode.
I agree. Why are folks so sensitive? This guy knows more than any of us and played in this system. He is being honest and speaking from some actual knowledge, which is more than pretty much anyone else can say. I learn a lot from his commentary.
Why are you pretty sure it extends into the Lockerroom?I agree. When I started this thread, I was surprised how angry he seemed and how candidly he wrote. And I am pretty sure that anger is shared within the locker room.
Im sure McCall has to get some credit but he also gets credit for watkins alviti and oliver...and thorsons read option disasters. There isnt any reason why thorson has to look so poorly on read options. Someyhing is wrong.
What frustrates me about McCall isn't the player development so much as the general lack of scoring. Here are our national ranks in scoring offense during his tenure:
2008: 74
2009: 71
2010: 64
2011: 51
2012: 42
2013: 84
2014: 100
2015 (so far): 109
In eight years, we've only averaged 30+ points once, in 2012. Dan Persa was one of the best QBs we've ever had and we couldn't crack the top 50 in scoring with him?
2008: 8I don't know how to readily look up these numbers, but how does it look in the Big Ten? I'm not really interested in comparing to all those leagues that basically have no defense.
2008: 8
2009: 7
2010: 8
2011: 5
2012: 3
2013: 10
2014: 12
YPG numbers look better, but yards without scoring are somewhat irrelevant. McCall's offense does place a premium on ball control/time control than absolutely maxing out scoring. I don't whether I like it or not, if I'm honest. Don't quite think it's appropriate to call him a high school level coach, but that makes me sensitive so it is what it is.Well, 13 and 14 look pretty bad, but it's hard to say that the ranking was terrible before then.
I don't who to blame for why Thorson doesn't run the speed option well, but I do know who to blame for calling the speed option. If your criteria for good coaching is for all of our players to develop into studs like Persa, then you won't like Harbaugh, Saban, or Meyer either. Something IS definitely wrong with Thorson's speed option play, but I/we don't know where to place blame for this: McCall, Thorson, or recruiting. If we're gonna run a speed option as a key part of our offense, then recruit kids who can execute the option reasonably well and who like to run the option.

Some of his "in-depth" review was really ridiculous and painted everything with a very broad stroke. I particularly liked, "We need to stop justifying Northwestern on its losses just because we played what you now deem a "great team." Stop."
This guy reads like someone that desperately wants to be a sports writer and thus feels full-on negativity will get him there.
Welcome to Iowa FB when you want to start comparing draft results to on-field results. Not terrible, no, but it's just amazing to me that -- for example -- in 2009 we had a QB that would be taken in the 4th round in the NFL Draft and who was the only QB drafted out of the Big Ten that year... and we finished 7th out of 11 teams in scoring? I know the QB position isn't everything, obviously, but 71st nationally?
We us thorson as a single threat. Almost never bootleg or do much of anything with him except in the redzone. We know when his number is called that he is fairly good running the ball if he doesnt have an option. His red zone running has been extremely positive. If your criteria for good coaching is for all of our players to develop into studs like Persa, then you won't like Harbaugh, Saban, or Meyer either. Yes, and if the QB can't run it properly don't call it effing 10 times in a row expecting different results. That's something even a HS coach wouldn't do.
