I came across this article about the engineering involved in converting Wrigley Field from baseball to a football field. There is also a Youube link that visually depicts the conversion. We had a similar field conversion at Petco Park recently for the Holiday Bowl. All that conversion effort and costs to convert went down the drain last year when the bowl game was cancelled at the 11th hour (literally) due to the omicron surge.

Within the article there is another link that discusses the Wrigley Field conversion in 2010 for the Northwestern-Illinois game. Also mentioned is that football games were regularly played at Wrigley going back to the 1920’s.

The Holiday Bowl will now be played every year at Petco Park so the temporary conversion to a football field there will become an annual event. The Padres organization spent a couple of million bucks to make revisions to the ballpark to more easily accommodate the conversion to football. Of course the old Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley, now demolished, was designed as a multipurpose stadium from the start to host the Padres and the Chargers. Petco Park is back to hosting large events like concerts and monster truck rallies, and Padres games.
