4-2-5 base defense

Not sure if anyone noticed at the beginning of the game last Saturday but it appears we are now a base 4-2-5 defense?

I know a lot of teams in today’s era run around 3 WRs as their base offense but thought it was interesting nonetheless. Cant imagine we’ve ever had a base 4-2-5 defense in our past…

We did it a ton last year as well.

Why I'm cautiously optimistic about the offense after week 1

Not so amateur. Brought up an interesting observation. What, if anything, was unique/different about Lujan's play calling from times past? There certainly were more long shots down field than in times past. On a couple of them I got the feeling they were more to tell the defense NU was willing to take shots vs an expectation they would be completed. The TEs weren't targeted a lot although there was the one big completion. Didn't seem like Henning got a lot of targets. The sweeps didn't work which was a little surprising as they were more effective last year. Good, disciplined D expecting them? Any other thoughts.
Also in the "never strapped it on" camp but it felt like the offense made greater use of quick-developing plays vs. the Bajakian teams of old. I'm hoping that helps to mask some deficiencies on the On-line, and maybe create better rhythm when we have the ball.

Alabama just switched to this same defense post-Saban.

Think that is more matchup vs true base

How are we not happier here?

What was notable was how clean both teams played except for the two miscues by NU on snaps. The first interception was a tough pass but in a good spot that bounced off the receiver's hands. The second one was great D. Very few penalities. Plays were made but no one was blowing coverages, etc. Kicks were made. When teams play clean like that, particularly in the first game, that is a good sign of veteran, well-coached teams.

I thought Miami had good receivers but no one who could take the DB's to school like Casey Washington of Illinois did last year. So how good the DB's are against great receivers is still TBD.
NU didn’t play clean at ALL on offense, as Braun has said. Several snap mistakes, including disasters, and a bunch of procedural penalties on top.
