The Daily Northwestern weighs in on the Bowl Selection

Ironic that the newspaper that played a pivotal role by publishing claims that proved to be erroneous which arguably resulted in the rushed and unjust firing of Coach Fitzgerald is now forced to pay him homage for his bowl record: (Yes, I am referring to the whole Fitzgerald's alleged clap signaling thing that proved to be a lie made up by a disgruntled former player.)

"NU enters with a four-game bowl winning streak — the second-longest in the Big Ten and fourth in the nation. "

The Daily's Story

Cats need a change the approach to the Portal

I know the last two portal QB's signed later in the cycle, but it's time to be aggressive. Cats need to go get a proven veteran passer of the highest level. Without a top level QB in the Big Ten, nothing else on the roster will matter. land a QB early (spend some $$) and then focus on OL, DL and LB in the portal and in recruiting. The last thing the cats can afford is losing the momentum they have which is largely attributable to getting Bryant in the portal. Think Big - Play Big. Go Cats!

FOOTBALL I portend…

that Mike Bajakian will not return as OC for NU. Not a shocking revelation I know, but this is confirmed as being a done deal. Word is that Braun is waiting until after the Illinois game to make final decisions on the rest of the staff. The waiting game is tough on the assistants, their families and our players. Hopefully Braun will have decisions made very soon. Supposedly, Jake was not fond of waiting on a decision by Braun…when DB was non-committal last week as to Jake’s status, Jake made the decision to move on. I have not heard if Jake will coach in the bowl game or depart immediately after the Illinois game. If I had to guess, I’d assume he cleans out his office on Sunday (that’s conjecture on my part). I haven’t heard any specifics as to a possible successor at OC…I would keep an eye on rising talents in the FCS world that have previous ties to DB at some point in their careers. There is some concern that all the new coaches may come from the FCS ranks. There is some sentiment that DB would be wise to retain a number of current assistants in order to stem the tide of potential transfers (portal window opens on 12/4). Should be an interesting 10-14 days coming up in Evanston.

2025 point guard Angelino Mark can't wait to visit Northwestern

Northwestern offered California guard Angelino Mark on Oct. 26 and he is looking forward to taking a visit to Evanston once his junior season wraps up this spring. @KennyKChoo has the story on the athletic guard Northwestern hopes is its latest addition to its backcourt pipeline.

FOOTBALL A few impressions from David Braun's bowl game press conference

Matt is writing a notebook feature on today's presser. Braun talked a lot about what the game means to him and the program, and how much those extra practices will help. What stood out the most to me were his answers to Matt and my questions about recruiting, the transfer portal and staffing.

First, he said that the coaching staff would stay intact through the bowl game. "We started this ride together, as a group with these players...and we're going to finish thing off together, the right way." So the coaching staff evaluation is ongoing, but they won't make any changes until after the bowl game.

I asked about the transfer portal and he had some interesting things to say. He said it was a fluid situation. "It hasn't been easy, there's a lot going on." First, he talked about finding out where players are in their decision process regarding next season and beyond. He doesn't think there will be many transfers, but guys are also deciding about their extra COVID year. They are also in the concurrent process of evaluating their team needs.

They still don't have a DPP in place and won't have that in place until after the bowl game, either. The most interesting thing to me was his statement that the recruiting operation would look very different next year, not necessarily in terms of people, but in terms of numbers. Sounds like they are going to ramp up. The bottom line is that I don't think there will be much portal activity in this early window because they just aren't ready. But it sounds like he has a vision that he's working toward and trying to put the pieces in place. That could be Skip Holtz's impact. He said not to expect many "big splash" names in the portal, but pointed out that Ben Bryant, AJ Henning, Richie Hagarty, Cam Johnson, et al, weren't the biggest names out there, but they were "the right guys for Northwestern."

Purdue Thoughts

I initially didn't plan to provide an analysis because the game wasn't broadcasted on BTN+ or ESPN+. However, after watching the game, I believe it is worth discussing; the victory was truly remarkable and the atmosphere at Welsh Ryan Arena was electric, making it a joy to watch. This game has the potential to be remembered as one of the best college basketball matchups of the season. I cannot emphasize enough what an outstanding win it was.

Compared to last year, Purdue has undoubtedly become a stronger team. They have retained arguably the best player in college basketball and their backcourt has shown significant improvement. Consequently, they are considered one of the top teams in the country. Northwestern University's strengths align closely with Purdue's weaknesses. Buie showcased his ability to dominate any opposing backcourt. Northwestern's ability to make critical shots and create numerous turnovers greatly supported them, especially considering their struggles with rebounding. However, the way Northwestern protected the ball and forced turnovers on the other end was truly amazing to watch.

Overall, the officiating was relatively fair. Calling a game involving a player like Edey, who possesses exceptional talent and size, can be challenging. Superstars often receive favorable calls, and Buie also manages to get away with certain actions. However, I do wish the officials would call three seconds on Edey. Northwestern played a physically strong game, refusing to back down defensively and shooting exceptionally well in the second half. It is worth mentioning that their free throw performance still has lots of room for improvement.

Buie
Min 43, Pts 31, Ast 9, Reb 4

Buie displays exceptional skill defensively in passing lanes this season. He possesses finesse in getting to and scoring with his right hand. Additionally, Buie exhibits skill in attracting fouls and earning trips to the free-throw line. It's amazing how during offensive struggles he manages to draw fouls consistently. Undeniably, Buie stands out as the most outstanding guard in the B1G conference. He has consistently progressed each passing year donning the NU uniform. In his freshman year, he showcased his ability to penetrate and shoot 3-pointers. Transitioning into his sophomore year, he transformed into an excellent facilitator, impressively avoiding turnovers and delivering remarkable passes. Furthermore, his shot selection significantly improved in his junior year. In his first senior season, he excelled at getting to the foul line and finishing at the rim. In his second senior year, his defensive prowess in the passing lanes truly shines. It amuses me how, before the game, the announcers projected a close matchup between Jones and Buie in terms of skill, yet later they lavished praise on Edey. Nonetheless, Buie successfully proved himself as one of the nation's top guards this year.

Berry
Min 35, Pts 21, Ast 4, Reb 2

Berry initiated the game with an outstanding offensive performance. He managed finish a breakaway layup off a Buie steal, and had a splendid lob to Nicholson early. When Berry exhibits proficiency in 3-point shooting, it significantly elevates the team's performance. Furthermore, he serves as NU's most formidable perimeter defender and showcases remarkable rebounding skills for a guard. Even when his shooting might not be on point, his defensive contributions remain consistently stellar. During this game, his shooting performance was exceptional, contributing to NU's triumph. NU’s ceiling as a team is really elevated when Berry shoots as well as he did.

Barnhizer
Min 37, Pts 8, Ast 2, Reb 5

Brooks encountered difficulty scoring throughout the game. However, he compensated for this through his remarkable defensive efforts and adept ball movement, demonstrating astute basketball IQ. Although these contributions may not necessarily appear on the stat sheet, it is imperative for skilled players to impact the game even in the absence of scoring. Brooks emerges as a physical player, consistently executing numerous hustle plays. His intelligence and high energy on the court are notable attributes. While I do not particularly like the buzzcut hairstyle, it is certainly an improvement from his previous odd bowl cut fade hybrid.

Langborg
Min 42, Pts 20, Ast 2, Reb 4

Langborg's exceptional shooting skills this season are truly a blessing, as they greatly enhance the potential of this team. His ability to make clever passes sets him apart, making him arguably the second-best passing guard on the team. In particular, his first-half assist to Preston, executed amidst heavy traffic, was quite impressive. Langborgs ability beyond the arc adds a whole dimension offensively that last year's team sorely missed. It was great to see his shots fall tonight. Langborg’s and Berry's contribution in the scoring column helped lead the team to victory.

Nicholson
Min 12, Pts 2, Reb 2, Ast 1

Nicholson deserves recognition for his solid defensive performance against Edey, who is an incredibly dominant presence on the court. Nicholson consistently displayed his defensive prowess throughout the game, forcing Edey to work hard for his points and made some of the entry passes very difficult.

Clayton
Min 4, Pts 0, Ast 1, Reb 0

Clayton effectively managed the offense while Buie was on the bench, precisely meeting NU's needs coming into this season. His competency in running the offense without compromising on defensive capabilities was exactly what was required. Admittedly, Clayton had a few defensive mishaps during the game, but against a formidable team like Purdue, such lapses are somewhat expected from a freshman.

Preston
Min 19, Pts 4, Ast 1, Reb 3

Preston deserves praise for his commendable performance, considering the significant height disadvantage against Edey. By the end of the game, he seemed to have successfully gotten into Edey's head, with his steals proving to be crucial plays. Furthermore, the entire team should be acknowledged for their effective strategy in making entry passes to Edey as challenging as possible. This was especially evident during overtime, where Preston's steals exemplified their defensive efforts.

Hunger
Min 14, Pts 6, Ast 2, Reb 5

Hunger exceeded expectations and performed admirably despite his lack of experience, especially when matched up against one of the top players in the country. Despite accumulating five fouls, Hunger played well and his minutes were crucial, especially considering the foul trouble our larger players faced in this game. He displayed a remarkable amount of energy on the court. While it wasn't a flawless performance, Hunger gave his all and more. I am excited to see his growth within the team over the next 3-4 years.

Martinelli
Min 19, Pts 0, Ast 0, Reb 1

Martinelli consistently brings a high level of energy to his game. He was successful in winning several contested balls during the match. He played within the team's system and made smart decisions without forcing anything. However, he still struggles in defense and was likely not the best choice for doubling Edey in the post. Nonetheless, he is an excellent scoring option coming off the bench and possesses great strength in his left hand even though he was scoreless in this one. I am aware that he is left-handed, his right hand is basically nonexistent.

Utah WR Vele Declares for Draft, Won’t Play in Bowl

Utah’s leading receiver declared for the draft last night, unclear if anticipating playing in the bowl game:

UPDATE: Apparently not planning to participate in the bowl per Yahoo. The hits keep coming for Utah, who might be rolling out a shell in Vegas:

Hunger

I'm not a body language or facial expression expert, but Hunger seems to be having a lot of fun out there. He seems to be quick to jump off the bench on a good play or congratulate his teammate for a good play if he's already on the floor. Smiling, excited about the stuff he's doing. Less importantly, he seemed to really be jazzed about the court-storming while others quietly went to the handshake line. Love having a guy like him around the team, especially if he's getting playing time and playing well. Looking forward to seeing more!
