Jason Wright in the news for axing Warriors as a potential Washington team name

He’s what the kids call “woke” these days.

In the spirit of that engagement, I want to address a name that has emerged amongst our fanbase, "Warriors." One might look at this name as a natural, and even harmless transition considering that it does not necessarily or specifically carry a negative connotation. But as we learned through our research and engagement with various groups, "context matters" and that makes it a "slippery slope." Feedback from across communities we engaged clearly revealed deep-seated discomfort around Warriors, with the clear acknowledgment that it too closely aligns with Native American themes. Such an embrace of potentially Native-adjacent iconography and imagery would not represent a clear departure that many communities have so forcefully advocated for us to embrace, and that frankly, we set out to do when we started this process a year ago.
We have 89 years of history in this league and failing to acknowledge our past use of Native imagery in the consideration of the new name wouldn't be mindful of the individuals and communities that were hurt by the previous name. We've made significant changes in our organization and our culture, and our new name must reflect these changes. To that end, we will choose an identity that unequivocally departs from any use of or approximate linkage to Native American imagery.

HOOPS RECRUITING Signing Day Update

I’m hearing that Parker Strauss and Jordan Clayton will sign tomorrow, as planned, but that Blake Barkley’s signing will be delayed. They are still in the admissions paperwork process with him. He’s still 100% a Wildcat and grades are not an issue. Hopefully, they’ll have everything in order so he can sign his LOI by the end of the early signing period on Nov. 16.

Post Game Thoughts NIU

Foul trouble with the bigs is gonna be a year long issue. The moving screens can be the guards fault and they need to watch it with their bigs being foul prone. Verhooven struggled with touch around the rim and seemed to get a hand on the boards but couldn’t bring it in. He did fix some of that in the 2nd half.

Hopefully Big Matt can stay out foul trouble and get his min up as he has the higher ceiling. He’s running the floor better this season and is in much better positions defensively. He actually finishes and gets in positions for these nice feeds (Something Verhooven hasn’t shown as much of). Matt did miss a couple box outs.
Team still goes as Buie and Audige go. They initiate and make the offense go. Audige is still good for a couple bad shots per game. A few poor passes in each game by Audige. Buie is still prone to a “heat check”. I’m fine with a “heat check” but you need to be hitting for it to be a “heat check”.

Beran has started aggressive inside in both games. Good sign as the 3 won’t always hit. He had another good game today. Let’s see if this continues against better competition. I still stand by my last season comments he’s a good defender showed it today. Beran and Nicholson could be some tough trees to score on potentially.

Berry had a good game. Hit some contested layups and quick hands defensively. He hit the boards hard. NU will need that with the small ball line ups. Really nice game by him.

Roper is making some smart drives and still plays solid defense.
13 has some nice length. Had a really nice straight up block. Has couple nice offense plays. Lacks quickness a bit but could be a nice role player.

Lots of whistles have gone the cats way both games.

Good defensive possession followed by losing a man off ball. This will need to be fixed. This squad has some potential imo defensively. Hustled hard on loose balls. Some dumb fouls. Unsure how they will do against a dominant post presence though.

They should have put this game away earlier.

Michigan State vs Gonzaga- on an aircraft carrier!

The Spartans and Zags are playing on the USS Abraham Lincoln in San Diego. Good game so far. Past basketball games played on aircraft carriers have been “rather problematic”.

I can remember a game (San Diego State vs NC?) played on an aircraft carrier docked in Coronado. Between the carrier rocking back and forth and the wind sweeping across the court on the deck it was hard for either team to make a basket. I don’t think any threes were made in that game. It appeared in this game they managed to tame some of those issues. Zags win by one.

Rittenberg Calls for Sweeping Changes

Well, the knives are definitely out from one of our more prominent college football media alums. Rittenberg comes out calling for sweeping changes to the staff, recruiting, pretty much everything. Full article below if you’re an ESPN+ subscriber. No I’m not going to copy/paste the whole thing here.

Saturday weather

We just finished our nightly dog walk and it is now frickin' cold here. Just below freezing, and the beginning of a cold spell, about the same temp as game time on Saturday. It won't be a passing game, my fingers are frozen even with mittens. Can Hull and company outdue the Gophers running onslaught? Can the defense stop them? Please JON, come prepared for their run game, and the usual surprises the Gophers typically employ.
