David Braun just wrapped up his weekly press conference ahead of Howard, here are my initial notes. A full notes article will go up this afternoon.
Don't expect Howard to catch Northwestern off guard
With some heavy influence from his time at NDSU, don't expect David Braun to let his team overlook Howard. An FCS team into a bye week is a tantalizing time to take the foot off the gas pedal, but he said he won't let them.
"Absolutely not," he said. "This is a darned good football team coming in here. Maybe it's my background coming from Division II or FCS, but you can put whatever letters or numbers next to a team's name. There's good football at all levels."
"In these walls, there's no mention of FCS. We better strap it up, bring our urgency and be ready to roll."
Expect Ben Bryant at quarterback
No specific updates about Ben Bryant but Braun said postgame after Penn State he expects no long-term issues. He highlighted Bryant's toughness and grittiness and said he'd be doing everything in his power to play but "[I'm] not sure of what that looks like in terms of timeline by Saturday."
"We're moving forward anticipating Ben will be ready to go."
Alums and former players have been a well of support
Braun said he hasn't had much time to reflect given the hectic start to the season and non-stop game prep for the past five weeks. He did say that the support for himself and for his players from the program's alums and former players has stood out through everything.
"I think where they feel tangible support day in and day out is from their parents and teammates, but the outpouring of support from former players, the alumni, [has been impressive]. What those men have meant to the guys in our current locker room is just...words can't express it. I think we have an opportunity for us on Homecoming, as a team, to honor those that have worn the uniform, worn the jersey and walked in our shoes."
Braun talked about recruiting goals
For the second time in the last three days, Braun seemed to take the long view in his statements. Uncharacteristic for a man who'd just be here for one year. He took a question about Penn State's NFL talent, briefly answered then turned to highlight Northwestern's potential to recruit and coach NFL talent of their own.
"There's a great deal of excitement for us as a staff moving forward long term to recruit young men that fit the values and profile here at Northwestern. We can bust our tails year round to help them develop into great NFL prospects and NFL talent and that's been proven here for a long, long time...we may not be able to recruit a bunch of five stars right now, but we can recruit a bunch of young men that, 36 months from now, can turn themselves into guys that NFL scouts are coming through [to see]."
Howard's band is coming to town
Howard's "Showtime" marching band, one of the best in the country, will be traveling to Ryan Field.
"I think it's awesome," Braun said. "That's college football at its best...I think the band's pageantry, everything that goes on pregame, at halftime, postgame, I mean it's all part of it. It's a historic opportunity for Northwestern to be playing against an HBCU."
