'18-'19 Roster Up At NU Sports

Do you think there is any chance they try to shirt him? I was one that thought he would be starting by B1G season, but now y’all have me rethinking.

No chance. Big year for the program. All hands on deck.

Larry Nance was a NBA all-star who at his peak was averaging 20 ppg and was a slam dunk champion and his brother is a NBA player. Pete Nance’s family background in basketball is a little different than Nick F. or
Shurna. Pete Nance accomplished a ton in high school. UM whose coaching staff is a pretty good evaluator of talent wanted Pete and offered him. That shows me a lot. Is he a finished product? Maybe not, but he has more skills than most guys on the team.

Yeah, my understanding is that Pete is a lot further ahead than Larry Jr. was at this point in their careers. He accomplished more and did more as a HS senior, is more skilled and more physically gifted.

I'd be surprised if he isn't starting this year over Falzon. Maybe not day one, but sooner rather than later.

My (completely uninformed) projection of starters:

Ryan Taylor
AJ Turner
Vic Law
Pete Nance
Dererk Pardon

Primary Backups:
Anthony Gaines
Miller Kopp
Aaron Falzon
Barrett Benson

Maybe I'm wrong about Falzon vs. Nance, and perhaps Gaines starts on the strength of D and if he emerges as a ball handler, but otherwise I see him as a role player still especially as a guard. People forget Turner started for BC and was basically their 3rd best player. Don't see how any of our other guards play in front of him and Taylor. I think Taylor plays 38 minutes with Law. I'll go against the grain and suggest Taylor ends up being our MVP over Law or at least our leading scorer - and will be better than Lindsey or MacIntosh was for us. Gaines and Kopp to rest Law and Turner. Benson spells Pardon (Young redshirts) and Nance and Falzon will split minutes. Assuming Kopp is as good as advertised, but hard to see putting him ahead of anyone I've listed. He'll get good minutes though.

All in all we have roster depth if not positional depth. That's 11 names/players I named. We probably don't go much more deep than 8 or maybe 9 actually.

So, odd men out in my view are Ash and Greer. Ash will get some minutes but not much more than last year - just think the talent gap isn't sufficient to justify increased minutes relative to rest of roster, and I think Greer is a bit green and just not one of the best 8 or 9. I think we just go without a PG for most of the year, and just have our best players and as noted different offensive sets that deemphasize a primary ball handler. Probably play some sort of motion offense with no emphasis on a primary ball handler for the most part, which Duke has been known to do. Spot minutes from Greer and Ash who can play a more traditional point - maybe. Perhaps, Gaines and Turner are the primary ball handlers when they are on the court. There was talk also of Law doing some playmaking. Who brings up the ball? I don't know, maybe Taylor, Law, Gaines, or Turner. Pete Nance did it in HS. Taylor has some handle or at least is used to having the ball. Anyways, gotta figure out how to play with out a traditional PG because we don't really have one who isn't completely green.

Boy, we miss Lathon. But, boy was Taylor a huge add. Not sure what we'd be doing without him.

I think Gaines will start and play a Lumpkin-esque role. We need his toughness and switching ability more than we need a stretch shooter, especially with good shooters in Law and Turner already there.

Bingo. Although he is better at taking the ball to the rack than Sanjay was.

The issue with Ash is that he hasn't played any competitive ball since he was injured at the end of last season (per Teddy's Trib article last week, he won't be cleared for contact until the fall). Therefore, he probably won't have improved his game any, and may even be rusty at the start of the season. I think minutes at lead guard are completely up for grabs at this point.
Also Ash hasn't proved that he can or ever will be a Big Ten PG.

I think Jordan Ash and Anthony Gaines will play PG as more off ball roles while Ryan Taylor and Vic Law will take the majority of the playmaking. Its great defensively and takes away the uncertainty Greer will have. I dont think Collins will give a freshman PG heavy minutes to learn on the job when he wants to give his seniors a good season this time around.
If that all takes place then NU can forget about being in the upper tier of the conference. Let's remember that McIntosh got big time minutes as freshman.

I agree. I think Gaines is our next “glue guy” who may not be a superstar but will play a ton of minutes in his career.

nance will not start at the beginning of the year

I'd be interested in getting haywood's more complete perspectives on starters and minutes distributions of the players. Any chance you bless us with your more informed prognosis haywood?

Clearly one thing Haywood has been trying to tell us is that Nance is not going to be an immediate impact player, as many here are speculating. Dialing back expectations on the Nance hype.

No way. I say he’s starting by January, if not in the first game. Only redshirt candidate is Young, IMHO.

Don't count wrassler or Jordan Ash out of the picture just yet! I'm expecting a big year from both of us. I think Clayton will also do well as will our football team.

if i had to bet now, i would say no

Could u elaborate a bit? Is it because Nance isn't as good as he's been hyped, or is Falzon or someone else too good to be beaten out by the frosh?

What's your projected starting 5 look like, as well as distribution of minutes across the team?

Off the record of course.

The roster is pretty loaded at the forward spot with tons of experience. Law and Taylor will be fifth year players. Turner and Falzon will be fourth year players. And the two highest rated...Kopp and Nance are frosh.

A unique opportunity to give the frosh the space and time they need.

This is a very senior team with Pardon and Benson at center. Decent guard play and they can give anybody in the country a game.

Nance is developmental prospect. High ceilings, lots of potential. Needs to catch up physically. In other words he's gonna be good just not right this second. I believe he's a huge a recruiting get and deserves hype but don't expect him to be an instant impact freshman.

I'd be satisfied if Nance develops into John Shurna v2.0, which would mean leading B1G in scoring, First Team All B1G and an All American. I'd sign for that right now.

nance will struggle with the speed of being a wing and the strength of being a post. but as another poster said, he has a very high ceiling and a unique skill set for his size. once his strength and speed develop he will be a very good player and a match up nightmare for other teams, but he will not be an impact guy from day 1 even if it shakes out that he starts.

i have heard AJ Turner has played really well and Falzon is healthy after playing in Malta. Add Ryan Taylor and Miller Kopp to go along with Anthony Gaines and Vic Law - there will probably be less learning on the fly during games.

I watched parts of all of Aaron's games for Malta....he does look healthy and fit but is still pretty one-dimensional.
What if he was multi-dimensional in the parts you didn't watch?

Good news about Turner. He would be a nice boost to the team.

I’m not sure who will start at “4” (Falzon, Nance, someone else) and I don’t really care. Regardless of that, I think we will play a good number of minutes with 3 or even 4 wing type players (when Greer is not on the floor) plus Pardon. That’s where the strength of our team is (Turner Law Taylor to start, plus Gaines Kopp etc), and you adjust your approach based on your personnel. I imagine Falzon and Nance will both get minutes, but I think in today’s style of game we will be perfectly fine with Vic or Turner or whoever guarding opposing 4s for periods of time, and maybe even in crunch time.

I’m much more concerned about the PG position than I am about who will start at the 4.
