86 Ex NU players criticize NU administration in open Letter

We won 3 B1G titles over a span of 6 years before Fitz. In 17 years we had zero B1G titles, despite him saying that was our goal every year. We had some good defenses, shitty offenses, and once Hank retired, we were shitty on both sides of the ball. 4-20 in our last two years. I’d say it was a fail. And no the expectations were not too high. Effing 4-20. 110’s ranked offenses and defenses. Big fat F.
Saint Barney and Saint Hank in one paragraph. You are getting good with brevity of your point.

Randy Walker's teams were 24-32 in the Big Ten in 7 seasons. 42.8% 3 Bowl games. 0-3
Gary Barnett's teams were 23-33 in the Big Ten in 7 seasons. 41.1% 2 Bowl games. 0-2
Pat Fitzgerald's teams were 65-76 in the Big Ten in 17 seasons. 46.1% 10 Bowl games. 5-5
Francis Peay's teams were 9-38-1 in the Big Ten in 6 seasons. 19.8%(?) 0 Bowl games.

So your "Big Fat F" for Fitzgerald is ludicrous.
Walker, Barnett and Fitzgerald all deserve credit for the success they achieved at Northwestern.

So weird…the rest of the sports world looks at the last few years in evaluating their coaches. I suppose Ozzie was also the modern GOAT for Sox. How did the Cubs lose their greatest coach too? Why is Ditka not still coaching the Bears?

Lots of similarities between Joe Pa and PF. Neither knew what was going on. Before we’re kept around for legacy instead of results.

Guess NU was supposed to keep PF around until he died because of shit he did a long time ago.

Record against top-3 teams in the Big Ten:
Peay - 2-11, 15.4% (Michigan, OSU, MSU)
Barnett - 3-13, 18.8% (OSU, PSU, Michigan)
Walker - 5-10, 33.3% (OSU, Michigan, Wisconsin)
Fitz - 6-26, 18.8% (OSU, Wisconsin, Michigan) - 1-7, 12.5% since 2019

Record against bottom-4 teams in the Big Ten:
Peay - 7-15-1, 30.4% (Wisconsin, Purdue, Minnesota, Illinois)
Barnett - 13-10, 56.5% (Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa)
Walker - 13-10, 56.5% (Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, MSU)
Fitz - 35-21, 62.5% (Rutgers*, Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, Minnesota) - 4-9, 30.8% since 2019
*Only 2 games against Rutgers

Fitz benefitted from a bigger conference with worse teams in padding that record. Both Barnett and Walker went 2-8 against OSU/Michigan while Fitz went 1-18. Prior to 2019 I would give Fitz props for his record against Iowa, MSU, Nebraska and Wisconsin, going 21-20 against them and putting us solidly in that middle tier of the conference. 4-11 since then has shown we aren't there anymore.

Invoking Paterno comps = delete
Hey Cappy - why? Granted this is a tough period and agreed the subject matter is far different, the head coaching side is arguably (key - arguably) similar. It’s about what a head coach knew or SHOULD have known.

So why can’t we debate that point and how people hold these two coaches?

Fitz without Hank = Peay and Dark Ages.

4-20

1-11

Losses to SIU, Miami, and Duke last year

Ugh

Maybe because every single reader of this forum knows exactly how each frequent poster feels about the topic. No one will change any minds as much as they think they somehow have the ability to do so. Beaten dead horse.

How many Bowl Games did Peay’s team play in? What was their record?
Excellent topic to bring up!

Peay - Made zero bowl games in six seasons.
There was an average of 18 bowl games per year, averaging 5 of 10 Big Ten teams making bowls. Conference had only one tie-in (Rose)

Barnett - Made two bowl games in seven seasons, including one Rose bowl, went 0-2.
There were 18 bowl games in 1992, and 3 of 10 Big Ten teams making bowls. Conference had only two tie-ins (Rose, Citrus).
There was an average of 19 bowl games per year for the rest of his tenure, averaging 6 of 11 Big Ten teams making bowls. Conference had three tie-ins in 1993-94 (Rose, Citrus, Outback), and five tie-ins from 1995-98 (Rose, Citrus, Outback, Sun, Alamo).

Walker - Made three bowl games in seven seasons, no Rose bowls, went 0-3
There was an average of 26 bowl games per year, averaging 7 of 11 Big Ten teams making bowls. Conference had seven tie-ins (Rose, Citrus, Outback, Sun, Alamo, Music City, Motor City)

Fitz - Made 10 bowl games in 17 seasons, no Rose bowls, went 5-5
There was an average of 33 bowl games per year from 2006-2010, averaging 7 of 11 Big Ten teams making bowls. Conference had seven tie-ins from 2006-2009 (Rose, Citrus, Outback, Alamo/Gator, Insight, Champs Sports/Texas, Motor City) and eight tie-ins in 2010 (adding TicketCity).
There was an average of 35 bowl games per year from 2011-2013, averaging 8 of 12 Big Ten teams making bowls. Conference had eight tie-ins (Rose, Citrus, Outback, Gator, Insight, Texas, TicketCity, Motor City).
There was an average of 38 bowl games per year from 2014-2022, averaging 9 of 14 Big Ten teams making bowls. Conference had eight tie-ins (Rose, Citrus, Outback, Holiday, Gator/Music City, Pinstripe, Foster Farms, Quick Lane).

So Barnett made the 1st and 2nd-best bowls, Walker made the 4th, 5th and 7th-best bowls, and Fitz made the 2nd, 3rd (twice), 4th (thrice), 5th, 6th (twice) and 7th-best bowls.
