A few updates:
  • Fordham fired their coach after 3 seasons, each worse than the last
  • Longtime Bill Carmody nemesis Ed DeChellis, owner of a 12-4 record (10-1 in his last 6 seasons) against the 'Cats, has retired from Navy.
  • Denver fired their coach after 4 seasons
  • NC State will hire Will Wade from McNeese
  • Iona hired an assistant from the NBA's Pelicans
  • Campbell hired an assistant from the Gators

Texas is hiring Sean Miller from Xavier while Virginia is hiring Ryan Odom from VCU. You may remember Odom as the coach of UMBC when they upset Virginia in the first ever 16/1 upset.

Still nothing from Villanova. I'm not going to relax until they hire someone else or NU announces a Collins extension.

At least it makes sense that VU is delayed. If Willard and Cronin are both realistic possibilities, then VU needs to wait - especially for Willard. Not only does he play another weekend, but the Maryland AD took another job "Friday." I assume everyone knew earlier.

If they wanted CC, he would've signed by now.

ESPN is reporting (from "sources") that Minnesota is hiring Medved from Colorado State.

Lots of updates, including Sacramento State hiring Mike Bibby, who hasn't coached anywhere since 2019, when he left his high school coaching job due to sexual assault allegations...

What is rumored about Willard doing to the Maryland team makes you really respect Izzo’s press conference even more.

and Will Wade.
I’m not talking just leaving/negotiating during the tournament. Willard is rumored to have skipped a team dinner and let the AHC run it and is also rumored to be recruiting the transfer portal for Villanova already.

Compared to Izzo’s press conference:

Izzo is a class act and an all around nice guy if you ever get the chance to meet him. He’s the kind of coach you love to play for no matter how hard he is on you.

I saw clips of this earlier. It's awesome! I like our coach, but Izzo is easily my next favorite coach in the BIG.

Willard is a spineless maggot and I hope this blows up in Villanova face.

You can relax. It’s Willard and it’s done.
Is there a fingers crossed emoji? But thank you. Nothing makes me relax as much as someone on the internet telling me I can relax. It's like we're up 10 with 90 seconds to go. Sure I can relax, but am I going to?

Crazy. CBS in DC is reporting Willard is gone and Maryland is already looking at new coaches with the AMERICAN University coach on the shortlist. My kid went to AU and lives in DC where she’s found the info.

Maryland is a major rebuild for next year, but then again, rosters are being almost totally remade by a lot of teams through the portal these days.

Jon Rothstein also reported that Willard was deciding between Maryland and Villanova and nova was willing to wait.
After the way a lot of fans and Maryland Media attacked Willard this week, I would think he is long gone. It sounds like he was gone either way, but these attacks give him plausible deniability that his decision wasn’t baked in prior to the leak.

Based on his conduct in press conferences and how he trashed his current job, it was clear he was already planning to leave. He skipped the team dinner on Thursday before the game…

He deserved any crap he got.

In other news, Jon Scheyer reveals he interviewed at DePaul for the head coaching job three years ago and they chose Tony Stubblefield instead. Scheyer would have been a great hire for them with his Chicago area ties and his Duke pedigree, but....no. DePaul has been flailing with coaching changes aver since the Joey Meyer was launched by the decidedly awful Bill Bradshaw. This year's Duke team may be one of the best in history if they keep dominating (average margin of victory 23 points) like they have so far in the tourney.

UC San Diego veteran coach Eric Olen hired by New Mexico. Big loss for the Tritons but not unexpected that he would move on to a larger program after bringing UCSD to their first tourney game in the big dance.

Lots of changes tracked above, just catching up after vacation.

  • Loving Xavier hiring Richard Pitino who will have to face his dad 2-3 times a year now, should be great drama in the Big East.
  • West Virginia hires Ross Hodge, North Texas' HC, who despite only being the HC for two years, was an assistant under current TT HC Grant McCasland for 6 years before that, so now he gets to face his former boss each year.
  • Phil Martelli Jr. got his opportunity to be a HC because his former boss had to resign following a hit and run accident right before the 2023-24 season. He's made the most of his chance, as Bryant had their best-ever season this year, and now gets to take the reins of VCU after just two years in charge, but with another five as an assistant at Bryant.
  • As mentioned above, Eric Olen goes to New Mexico after seeing UCSD through its transition to D1 over the past five years and having a phenomenal season this year
  • Colorado State promotes from within, and Ali Farokhmanesh, who you undoubtedly remember from his famous March Madness shot to lead Northern Iowa to an upset of Kansas, gets his shot.
  • Drake hires SDSU's coach of the last six years, who was previously an assistant under current Iowa St. coach TJ Otzelberger
  • Also as mentioned, Fran McCaffery gets to go back home to Philly, to try and bring Penn back up to their past glory. Penn never really recovered once Fran Dunphy went to LaSalle, and they really fell off post-COVID, as Yale has become the dominant team in the Ivy.
  • Fordham has hired UC Riverside's Mike Magpayo, who made history as the first Asian-American coach in D1. Wonder if he will bring Parker Strauss with him.
  • Maryland is the only marquee job open right now, with speculation that Buzz Williams wants it, along with other candidates such as current PSU HC Mike Rhoades, George Mason HC and former MD asst. Tony Skinn, American HC and formed MD player Duane Simpkins, and Luke Murray (Bill Murray's son), an asst. at UConn.

I served on the committee that oversees intercollegiate athletics and recreation years ago when UCSD was in Division 3 and saw them rise from DIII to DII to DI transition that has occurred over the last few years. It was so much fun watching them come back against Michigan in their first game in the big dance. Eric Olen was instrumental in bringing the program to this level. Good luck to him with his new job at New Mexico.
