Colorado

Should we care about Colorado? He wants his own people. If you were a player, would you stay if you weren’t wanted? He is doing what he said he would do. Sure he is an Ass, but he sees his job is to win games. How many NU players if enrolled at Colorado would have survived the purge? Doubt very many. The power has swung to the players with the portal and silly amounts for pay to play. It shouldn’t be some surprise that Coaches look out for themselves in the same manner as the player.
No. We shouldn’t care about Colorado. Doesn’t really impact NU, unless we get any of these kids.

But remember- these kids were part of arguably the worst Power 5 team in 2022.

I live here, my Kids went to CU, and I’m a fan. So I’m watching this unfold. But I would advise everyone else to use your time more wisely.😃👍

I was at the game. It was legitimately a fantastic atmosphere. The pregame was amazing - was in their fieldhouse which was filled with things for the kids + had a ton of ex-athletes there signing autographs + a ton of recruits. The game itself was fun, but seeing the older lady do the kickoff was great, and Prime definitely kept the energy up.

I did think it was funny that Prime was wearing his swag (not CU). I also think the WR that went into the portal was legit - had a great rip on a catch. Plus little sanders and hunter looked the part for sure. The weather was the big downfall - but was balmy compared to what we are used to in Evanston.

I will also say that I had my back turned to my five year old, and she got my attention as she wanted to introduce me to her new friend - a young man with some damn good fashion sense. Turned out to be Laviska Shenault - great dude.
Hope to meet you some day, DkeCat. Denver NU Club has to find a new spot for watch parties now that Blake Street Tavern has closed.😢

I don’t think all of the players are transferring because Sanders wants them out. It’s some of that, but it seems to be a mini-mutiny as well. Complete shit show in Boulder right now.
Think you got it wrong. Prime is culling all the dead weight from a horrible football team and changing the culture of a terrible program. Doing exactly what he said he do from day 1. He’s holding everyone accountable for max effort and commitment and that makes a lot of mediocre players uncomfortable. I’ll bet he hasn’t lost a single player he wanted to keep.

He’s definitely culling the herd, no question. Pretty sure their number one receiver leaving wasn’t planned though. He’s the one that jumped out at me.

One of the reasons Gary Barnett thought he could win at NU was that scholarship limits were put in place at about the time he took the job. Now we're back to anything goes and I'm not sure how NU will be able to negotiate that so yes, this does affect Northwestern.

This. I agree that it's fun to talk about what's going on there, but this has so little effect, if any, on NU. The most tangible effect would be if they recruit one of our players or someone considering coming to NU, or if someone transferring out came to NU and had a meaningful role. Beyond that, this whole thing seems like fuel for chatter. Maybe they become a top 20 or top 10 team next year. So what?

Yes, but there used to be a limit on how many new players you could bring in each season.
I understood that this was a temporary change and, after next season, the annual limits will again apply.

Umm, did you watch any of our games last year? Sorry, I didn't want to go there but it was too easy.

BTW, I agree this is harsh but I also think Coach Prime loves his kids. The only thing is, I don't think he views these 55 players in the portal as his kids.

If a coach decides he needs to remake his roster, I guess I don't see why doing it quickly is worse than doing it over a period of years. In some ways slow is worse because keeping kids that you don't want is not fair to anyone. Coach Prime is doing it quickly because he can. I don't view this roster turnover as mean or cruel. Now what would be mean/cruel/sh_tty is if Deion isn't loyal to the new kids he brings in. I don't know what he owes to kids he didn't recruit. I suspect every P5 coach probably sees that the same way - if I didn't recruit you, I don't owe you my loyalty. They just don't have Deion's brand behind them to actually turn over a roster in a single off-season. In college football today, who else could do this at a new school? Saban, Dabo and Prime. I think that's it. And Dabo and Nick aren't going anywhere.

Also, the fact that Coach Prime is such a unicorn should probably give us some comfort that this isn't the new trend in college football. This fast of a roster turnover may never happen again. It's only happening because Prime can make it happen.

Deion (I refuse to call him Coach Prime) does represent the current trend in football, but he definitely represents the very most extreme of the trend pumped up onto steroids, just like everything else Deion has ever done in his life.

Team Dynamic Under Deion Sanders
When Deion Sanders arrived as the new coach at Colorado in December, he warned the roster in his initial meeting with the team that significant changes were coming.
“I’m bringing my luggage with my luggage with me and it’s Louis,” Sanders told the team. “I want y’all to get ready and go ahead and jump in that portal. The more you jump in, the more room you make.”
Sanders’s approach may have been brash, but who could blame him? After all, the Buffaloes went 1–11 last season and were one of the worst programs in the country under Karl Dorrell.
The spring game last Saturday was nationally televised, and significant roster changes began right after the game ended. Over the last four days, 23 players have entered the transfer portal, with many “cut” by Sanders himself.
According to a story from David Ubben of The Athletic, there was a clear divide between how players from the old regime have been treated versus how players Sanders has brought in via the transfer portal have been treated since his arrival in Boulder.
“None of the new coaches would talk to the old players and treat us the same as the people they brought in,” former Colorado tight end Zach Courtney told Ubben. Courtney entered the transfer portal on April 19 as spring practice was coming to a close.
“The new guys wouldn’t be picked on as much in film,” he added. “Coaches would tell them to just do better, but if it was an old player, they’d keep going off on what you did wrong and keep yelling about it.”

Other players The Athletic spoke to reiterated similar details that Courtney provided. Sanders spent “little to no time” coaching the players that were inherited from Dorrell’s roster.
Travis Gray, an offensive lineman that Sanders told to enter the transfer portal on Sunday, echoed Courtney’s account.
“No relationship with [Sanders] at all,” Gray said. “I said what’s up to him a few times. I’m not sure he knew the names of half the kids he got rid of. He was worried about who he brought in. If you were on the 1–11 team, it seemed like he didn’t really care about us at all. He already said he was going to get rid of 25–30 of us, and that’s exactly what he did.”
Sanders’s rebuild in Boulder is well underway, and it’s clear that he’s using whatever means necessary to get things going in the right direction as quickly as possible.

It’s probably not sustainable. Not at Colorado. Not in the Big XII. Not in a community like Boulder. Or with a coach like Sanders.

Sanders will at best create a bubble of quick fix relative success. But numerous players will continue to come and go. Not enough big time ballers will turn down the bigger stages. Some loosely vetted players will leave their “baggage” behind. And the “dog” that is Deion won’t be a top hunter for long.

I think Deion is a smart and very capable man. He probably has a 5 year plan leading to his next HC job. And that plan probably has no consideration for sustainability.

GOUNUII
I agree on him having little interest in sustainability. I would be surprised if Deion has a 5-year plan. I wouldn't be surprised if he was moving on by the end of the 2024 season. By that time he will have gotten through the rough transition of such huge roster change, been able to surf on the backs of the high level talent he's been able to draw, be ahead of any issues that his dramatic approach produces, and keep building the legend of Coach Prime. He's not a coach who sees his job as developing kids into young men, so the purge is far from surprising.

While it didn't involve scholarships (can we get over the notion that programs really care about the student part of student-athlete), Amaker oversaw a similar purge when he took over the reigns of the BB program at Harvard.

Regarding the Cats, knew a # of players who felt that they were being treated differently than the players Barnett brought in, so, it's pretty much the norm (even if not as drastic as what Deion is doing).

To compare the transition period from Peay to Barnett to what’s going on in Boulder is laughable and idiotic.

^ What's actually laughable is your comprehension of what I had stated.

Already pointed out the difference in level, but it is simply human nature to care more about the people you have developed relationships with.

It's not just in football or the sports world, but pretty much everything.

When there's a new CEO, manager, chairperson, etc. - tend to see a good bit of turnover as the new person brings in his/her "people."

Sanders has cut players…71 have left the program. Not even remotely close to what transpired during the Peay/Barnett transition. Come to think of it, I can’t recall even one player transferring or being forced out. And yeah, maybe some of those players were treated a bit differently…that whole “gambling thing” didn’t sit well with the new staff.

Long discussion on Denver sports talk radio about this today. 4 former college and pro players all agreed: NO college program gives out practice video. And NO college coach wants practice video. They only want game video.

ALL 4 agreed that this kid doesn’t understand how things are done in major college football. Perhaps one reason he’s being run off?
Except at NU because we play guys who "practice" good and play like crap on game day. The NU-Fitz way...

That wideout was in the National Honor Society in HS and won some academic accolades at Colordao.

But he is already getting a lot of offers from all over the place.

I find the transfers after the Spring game peculiar because some of these guys WERE playing. Montana Craig was one of them and had a good showing.

In his own words and accurately reflected by Purple Knight:

Sorry I missed this earlier - unfortunately have to stay a bit anonymous so I don't lose my access to the good stuff, but definitely looking forward to meeting you. We have a pretty good group here.

My point wasn't about that part, but the part where CU players didn't feel that Sanders was as invested in them (or even really trying to know them) in comparison to the transfers he was bringing in...
