And NU is not on the list.

Morgan Park's star point guard says he will now choose from among Vanderbilt, Iowa, SMU, DePaul, Illinois, Miami (Fla.), Western Kentucky, California, UNLV, and Georgia Tech.

It was a long shot, but it sure would've been nice.

Did he ever visit Evanston or with the coaches? Surprised that there are no powerhouse BB programs on that list. W.Kentucky? DePaul? SMU? California? The competition was not blue chip, so why?

I just traded DMs with Doug Bucshon, who wrote the story, and he wanted to clarify that Charlie didn't specifically say NU was out of the running. The fact that he didn't list NU in his Top 10 probably means the Cats are effectively out, but as Doug pointed out, he may have just forgotten.

It's now an even longer shot, but we can still cling to a shred of hope.

Feel better? I don't.

Vandy, Iowa, SMU, Miami, Cal all are top notch programs right now. Not a bad list.

I guess al the angst over the 13th scholarship might be for naught....

A few things on why there are no powerhouses on the list:

- There are some pretty good schools on that list, in my opinion.
- It's late April. A lot of scholarship slots are gone.
- He's small, listed at 5-11. That alone will scare some of the big boys away. He's not a Tyler Ulis-level kid.
- He was a Memphis commit to begin with, not Duke or UNC. The real national blue bloods never offered.

Ah, Berry is visiting in two days correct? I still don't consider any of them as top notch, maybe a few steps above NU but hope that is changing.

My analysis....

NU doen't have the scholly for a guaranteed offer. What Collins said last year still stands....if the kid on scholly who is not playing wants to stay at NU for four years and graduate that's his prerogative.

Collins also said a year ago that he may leave at any time so the staff does its job and recruits as though a spot could open up. But, when push comes to shove, as Kelly 32 writes, it is not an option.

Regarding Barry. The scholly may be a nice to have but may not be a must have as his father may still be well off. And it's just a year of tuition, not four years. However, NU's engineering school has to stack up better than Miami's. I know Miami is a very good school but not sure about engineering.

One last point. Releasing a top ten after you've decommited from a school and re opened up recruiting is in poor form, if that's indeed what was done. It's beneath a graduate of the vaunted MPHS.

Noticed that Collins did not say that a 5th year schlorship is guaranteed.

SMU (top 25 and coached by Larry Brown), Miami (top 25 and made the sweet 16) California (top 25 and a #4 seed in the NCAAs) are more than "a few steps" above NU.

Cut it to 8 today. Took out Iowa, Vandy and Depaul and added LSU.

LSU and SMU are filthy programs, in my opinion. I'm not sure about the Illini. Good luck to the young man. I'm sure he thinks he will be a "one and done" and everybody recruiting him is patting him on the back in agreement.

It is interesting that when Moore was Northwestern's "to lose" he was a good student who could help the program. As soon as he takes NU off his list, he is "not a fit" and probably has his hand out.

I guess that is in the "we didn't want him anyway" category. :)

My guess is Georgia Tech or SMU.

There's no denying that he would have helped the team. Sorry, Combes, but when a guy's list has sleazy LSU and SMU on it (and Illinois!), I'm thinking it's gone greasy. If a kid has Stanford and NU as his final two and picks Stanford, I hate it, but I tip the cap, not because I'll ever agree with a kid not picking dear Alma Mater, but I get it.

This reads like a parody of the typical Illini Board poster.

If u subscribe to 247 sports read the insider board and it will shed some light on this situation

Combes, he can be a good kid and a good student and also surrounded by some sketchy adults.

Take a look at the Iowa board.

Knives such as.....?

So much for wanting to be close to home and his ailing father....

There's a reason he was going to Memphis. He wouldn't have been a good fit at Northwestern.

Wonder how many of these posts we would have seen had NU been on that list of 10?

I see cynicism (which you're pretty friendly with), maybe one questionable comment, but hardly vicious knives.

THOU SHALT HAVE NO PURPLE SPIN ON THIS NU BASKETBALL FORUM!!

Based on the last six or seven year history of this board, not too many.

However, you would have seen some notes that stated that a recruit who goes about his selection and announcement in this manner typically doesn't choose NU.

NU does poorly in the hat dance. Whereas, if every other sentence coming out of the kid is about academics and post college career, NU does a bit better.

Honestly, I would have liked for Charlie to go to NU for four years and graduate. It would have set him up for life. That's why I don't knock the kid who left the team and still goes to school at NU. Academically he's behaving like we should want all recruits to behave.

Georgia Tech would be a good academic choice for him if he doesn't take B.S. classes. Same with Illinois. He should totally pass on SMU.

I would have said we have to be the heavy favorite because we're the only school close to his ailing father that actually wants its athletes to take legitimate college courses.

Where did he ever say he wanted to play somewhere close to his family? That was something some people here projected on him.

Illinois is a good school and Champaign is only a 2 hour drive from Chicago. Their backcourt is pretty full, though.

Illinois is a historically good school, but the state's financial and political woes have bled into university administrative matters too often lately.

Amazing how the knives come out as soon as a kid takes us out of the running.

By the way, what's wrong with being an unapologetic NU fan and believing that our school offers the best environment for a college student with athletic gifts?

If you don't think we're a better place than SMU, maybe you should join their board.

Absolutely nothing. Implying that his decision to go elsewhere must have been driven by sleazy recruiting, on the other hand, is the height of arrogance.

Good thing I never said anything like that, eh?
