I’m frustrated by the apparent lack of activity or organization on the NIL front. I can’t imagine a better opportunity for the nascent NIL organization than the current excitement surrounding the basketball team. It seems like the bare minimum effort would be to send an email to Wildcat Fund donors soliciting money to assemble an offer to Buie and Audige to return. They would raise a small fortune. In fact, just having a NIL rep handing out business cards and asking for pledges In Sacramento would probably have raised enough to get the ball rolling. I’m curious whether Lou or anyone else on the board has any information on how the NIL initiative will capitalize on the current environment, or whether this amazing opportunity is just passing us by.

Handing out business cards? Seriously? TrueNU and the new NIL store has been all over social media as of late. Made my first contribution last week (albeit a small one).

Go Cats!!!

Your fears are way overblown. Jacob Schmidt was in Sacramento as were several TrueNU board members. Trust me when I say they were working the NU faithful. I can’t understand why some are wringing their hands over our NIL effort. It is real, we have a great guy heading it up in Jacob Schmidt and we are well on our way to achieving our goals. As I have said before, giving is a very personal thing but if you are so inclined, contact Jacob for more information: jacob@truenu.org. Go ‘Cats.

I ordered from the NIL store over the weekend.

Yes. TrueNU board member, Dean Kelley had a ton of face time during both games!

Some schools have the team attend a community event and they are paid from a fund established by the boosters. Very simple.

I think TrueNU is great and will benefit all NU sports but right now NU has the opportunity take advantage go ht this horrible Covid 6th year of eligibility by offering Chase and Boo about $600,000 total to say on and be at the same level of competitive sponsorship as many other programs. Yet, no one on this board, which has some pretty devoted NU fans, on it knows how to contribute.

To this point, I would love to see the disgruntled FB donors, STHs, etc have an opportunity to not simply not give or not buy, but direct their annual spend to bring these guys back.

Not only does it send a great message - get it done and you will get support, but allows those frustrated to still satisfy their spend, give desire.

And maybe that’s why no real avenue exists. Because what happens if everyone pulls out hard of FB on the eve of a new stadium in protest of PF and the way he does business. NU would have a real crisis on hand.

I doubt very many would pull out of football but a new avenue of support would present itself and really that is what NU needs. Figure it out in BB and FB will fall suit. A new stadium is great but over the next few years NIL is the cutting edge.

Well, I read a lot of posts over the past twelve months about some of the longer term STH holders deciding to bow out - and none seemed happy about it.

Given another opportunity to spend those STH bucks and possibly make a difference, guess we can agree to disagree.

Let’s see how many adults dressed in purple appear at the home games next season. Heck, I’m interested in seeing the student section turnout. In my day, we had in out privileges, frats could host tailgates in east lot, marshmallow battles, eventually even a possible win and other tomfoolery motivated student attendance. And best years students get to look forward to….

I can't disagree that winning will give the students the best inspiration and memories so let's get some great players on the court and field with superior NIL money

That’s not true. Are you interested in contributing to bringing back Boo and Chase? If so, send me a DM and I can help point you in the right direction.

You say that devoted NU fans don’t know how to contribute? A quick read of this thread should help. Or let your fingers do the walking: www.truenu.org. Or better yet, if you are seriously considering a donation, contact Jacob Schmidt directly at jacob@truenu.org. It’s quite easy.

If one thing happened in Northwestern basketball this year it was this - the myth that "NU cannot compete because of admissions" was irrefutably and permanently destroyed. Hallelujah for that.

The school practically sells itself.

So now if the immediate aftermath, there's a crew demanding that we jump headfirst into the NIL swamp.

Count me out. Talk about messed up priorities.

If Buie and Audige are worth (theoretically) $600,000, then how much should Nicholson, Barnheiser, Martinelli, Roper, et al, going to think they should be getting to want to stay? Amateur athletics no longer exists.

Right!
This, to me, is the problem.
If I'm on the court and my last name is Berry or Roper, I'm thinking differently about my teammates.
Where's my $$$? I just made a 3 pointer and Chase is 0 for 3. When do I get paid?

Seems guaranteed to destroy team chemistry.

You do realize that almost all P6 teams have some form of monetary NIL compensation for players and the scale typically varies depending on contributions? It’s pure Capitalism not Socialism.

Seems guaranteed to destroy team chemistry for most teams.

Yet somehow, professional teams managed to maintain team chemistry without paying everybody exactly the same amount.

And, let’s remember, players have been paid for a long time. It just wasn’t out in the open. Maybe not at NU.

This new world isn’t as new as it seems.

But the teams must operate within the salary cap. What's the salary cap for NIL?
I have suggested one way to control NIL would be a salary cap. Make NIL compensation disclosure a requirement to participate in NCAA programs. Use that data and structure to take away scholarship allotments for various levels.

Keep in mind, while that money alone might be drop in bucket compared to NIL 💰, certain benefits like training table and such are only available to scholarship recipients, unless that changed. So basically guy can have $1MM NIL, but without schollie, he’s excluded from team stuff and that sucks.

I agree with your point. That’s separate from this idea that there’s going be problems with team chemistry.

Heck… Lou pays me 6 figures to post here and it doesn’t seem to bother any of you guys

Miami and their lead guards are the most public example of this…. They seem to be doing just fine.

You can't cite the NBA, where everybody gets paid. Its a professional league.
I'm talking about college, where some guys will get paid and other guys won't.
Before NIL, everybody was on the same level, for the most part.

Barnhizer was a better player at the end of the season, than Audige. If you asked me who I would take for next season, I'd take Barnhizer. Nicholson too. Wouldn't rule out Berry and Roper, either could step up next year.

So if Audige gets paid (or anybody else) and those other guys don't, it seems problematic to me.

Of course a team with NBA talent can still win despite a lack of chemistry, but thats not the point.
Its college, not the pros.

I’m not saying there aren’t counter examples out there, but this is literally what’s happening at Miami. Pack and Wong are both getting paid $800k and a car to play for the Hurricanes this year. The rest of the team is not. They have a chance to win a national title.

Chase Audige was 2nd team All BigTen and co-defensive player of the year. Barnhizer is a nice young player and hopefully will develop into a bigtime player for us, but Chase is on a different level. Something tells me his teammates would be thrilled to have him back, no matter what it takes.

I suspect with the NU NIL program up and running, literally everybody on the NU basketball team will have an opportunity to earn some cash. If some wealthy donors want to rain on Buie and Audige, that’s great. Everybody on the team will have to come to terms with any disparity. If these guys are as emotionally mature and tough as we think they are, they’ll deal with it. If not, then maybe we live through another 2017-2018 season. But this is the new reality, ain’t no getting around it. Adapt or die.
