OT: Brad Underwood (Okie State) to the Illini

Using that logic DePaul should be too. I really don't think kids give a rats about tradition when it is all from before their lifetime
Huge difference Illinois vs DePaul in allure. The Ilini will be at or near the top in short order. Hopefully NU will continue its ascent and play for the top third of the conference each year.

No matter who was hired, Marshall, Drew, Keats, Bennett, Miller or this guy, the entitled would be here crowing on the rebirth. It's sad, when I was young they actually were good and likeable. Then they experienced success and looked down their nose at every one else, like it was their birthright to be a top 10 school in B Ball. Until they can recruit Chicago it won't happen. See you in averageville.

I don't see it, but I guess we will find out - Illinois is a non-entity in Chicago sports and has been for 10 years

You lost twice to Groce.....lololololo
and you lost your 1st,2nd,3rd, 4th,5th and 6th wants. now go back and wine on your board on why you didn't get one of the 10 top coaches in the country. Cream was available.

Jules, did u go to IL?

We have at least 5 times as many fans in Chicago as you, and you've staked your entire sports reputation on the city. Could you be any more of a hater?
I'm not comparing Illinois to "me" or NU. Illinois sports is a relic and non-entity in Chicago. I'm not a "hater" just expressing my opinion as someone who follows sports in Chicago for 40 years that Illinois is irrelevant and hiring the Oklahoma state coach certainly doesn't move the needle on that

The Illini suck. Illini fans are a funny breed. They're seem to have frozen time at the point they were relevant.

I'm just going to come out and say it... i hope he can't recruit and sucks as a coach. I want this to be the golden era of NU athletics. If NU can become the Duke of the B1G in basketball, it is good for the conference overall. I personally could give two sh**s whether Illinois ever regains their status as a powerhouse. I think NU has more to offer to the conference reputation, the Chicago sports fanbase, and NCAA overall as a becon of true student athlete excellence. I know what we were and what you were, Illini, but I think the future of college sports in Illinois is actually better overall if NU can achieve the vision shared by Dr Jim, Fitz, and Collins.

There it is. Sorry if you feel this makes me a biased fan. Would you expect something other than that of a true NU fan??

That's cool. In my most unvarnished moments, that's the way I think about NU.

Nevertheless, I was rooting for the Cats to beat the Zags. Tough loss. But it was a good season, and with Collins as your coach and an upgrade to your arena, I envision NU as competitive program year in and year out. ☹️

Illini fan trolling aside, I think he is the best hire for which they could possibly hope.

I know that your fans diminishing our program now over the last few weeks is unwarranted....

I think it was warranted and well called for. Your program underperformed this year. How are you doing in the NIT tourney?

Team looks like weight lifted off them...hope they make a run. I think the focus now is retaining assistant Walker and landing Mark Smith...

When he agreed to coach OSU, it was at a soginificantly below market deal with the condition that if he won, the AD would negotiate a raise with him.
He won, the AD wouldn't budge. So he left. I don't know how much you guys have seen his teams but this is a grand slam.

Tony Bennett would have been a "grand slam". Fact is this guy has only been a head coach for 4 years. He's had pretty good success in those 4 years, but he's not a top hire. Looks like a pretty good hire for Illinois, probably as good as they could have done this cycle.

Ok Illini fans... go give each other celebratory hand-Jo's for your new coach over on your own boards. If you are somehow expecting NU fans to join in the celebration, it's not gonna happen. Prove it on the court in the seasons to come. So far, this coach has accomplished exactly squat in the B1G. Maybe he's the second coming of Bill Self... maybe not. Don't care. We've got the start of something special at NU and are not going to be your doormat. Let the rivalry play out on the court.

There is only 5 players on the floor at any one time, thus how many fans you have is totally irrelevant.

Not really, we upgraded our coaching big time...I am glad we didn't sneak in as a 10th seed an have to retain John Groce
Big Time? He coached one fairly successful season and then broke his contract to come to Champaign. Wonder how the kids he recruited and their parents feel about the lies he told then. Can't wait to watch this guy recruit Chicago or not. maybe he can recruit that hotbed of HS talent in Oklahoma.

The Illini saved beaucoup $$ by hiring this guy (I still think he is a good hire). To get back in the game for Chicago stud HS recruits that money will come in very handy. Pay to play.

He wasn't on any of their unrealistic wish lists and has no Chicago connections. Your not suggesting that they cheat. are you?

I'd love to better understand Chicago Public League recruiting. I've been hearing lately on sports radio about the corruption involved. Does anyone have a good grasp on this and can explain a bit? Or a link to relevant media? I'd really like to get my head around it. If it is so well known that this is a corrupt environment, how can that be considered a good thing for the kids, and why would NCAA or any other regulatory body with influence on this matter just look the other way? I'm so sick of corrupt shit in this country!!

He was Whitmans second choice...no one thought he was available...
He has deep ties to the state of Illinois.

Sorry but never, ever saw his name mentioned as a possible Illinois coaching candidate. Maybe it was because he was only in his first year of coaching at Okie State. Sounds like a really stable type of guy or not.

Biggest problem for Northwestern with the public league, in addition to sometimes so-so recruiting by past coaches, has been finding players that qualify academically. Less of a problem for the basketball factories who are after one-and-done guys anyway.
