OT: Brad Underwood (Okie State) to the Illini

You're from Evanston.
Actually, our undergraduate campus is in Evanston. Logic indicates that the OP - from his statement - likely lives in Chicago itself, and thus spoke as a Chicagoan whom also cheers for Northwestern. Make sense?

I personally think Underwood is a nice hire by the way. It will be interesting to see how he does.

Gold Coast = Chicago. Couldn't sum up Northwestern more accurately.

Ok, now I'm confused...

You can get to NU via the CTA. For UoI, it's Greyhound or AmTrak.

I'm ok if UoI wants to start a marketing campaign as St. Louis' Big Ten Team. Shoot, you could even throw in Springfield and I'd be ok

I imagine you are equally as upset at the naming of "Chicago O'Hare International Airport". It's not in Chicago! When the pilot says "let me be the first to welcome you to Chicago" you're shouting back "we're in Rosemont, you ass! Get it right!"

Somehow, "Chicago Metro Area's Big Ten Team" doesn't roll off the tongue as well.

Anyway, hope your team continues to underperform. :)

The Gold Coast is in Chicago, hence those Northwestern campuses are in Chicago. Your point? By the way, I live in what probably would be considered a lower middle-class neighborhood in a small Pennsylvania town, so please don't bother to tell me what sums up Northwestern.

Listened to him on the SCORE this AM and he wasn't impressive, more like boring. Let's just put it this way, he's no Chris Collins.

For real, most Illinois fans understand NU tying itself to the city and taking pride in your proximity. Doesn't change the fact that everywhere outside of Evanston and the south suburbs (Notre Dame) are, by a pure numbers standpoint, our turf. We're obviously going to "respond," as that ad directly challenged our status as the state's (which, obviously and most importantly, includes Chicago) flagship school and de facto home team.

You're not going to respond because you'll get laughed at. Pig soo-weeeeee!! LOL!

Understand that you don't understand.

But, the reality is that Illinois does not "own" Chicago at all. Chicago is the home of the largest alumni bases of all of the Big 10 schools with the exception of Penn State. Those alums added together dwarf Illini nation. The ad is aimed at having those alums adopt NU as a "second" B1G favorite. By many accounts it has been successful. Certainly, this year and in football, we do get a number of fans who buy season tickets to watch their #1 team and then cheer for NU the rest of the way. Sorry you don't get that, but it does in fact make us Chicago's B1G team.

I do have to give credit for someone posting this under another thread first but figured it fit this one as well since someone is just upset they aren't Chicago's B1G team.

The fact that the phrase still gets under the skin of the Illini after a couple years is all the reason I need to keep pushing it.

Probably doesn't hurt that both Jerry Reinsdorf and Rocky Wirtz have NU ties themselves -- Reinsdorf has an NU law degree while Wirtz has an NU bachelor's degree.
