IU’s recent history of hiring Coaches is abysmal. I too don’t have a lot of confidence in IU getting the right Coach and then having patience with that Coach to change the culture.I am saddened, potentially bad for NU. Though as much as IU has botched their hirings, there is a good chance they can do worse.
Is the recent hiring of their new football coach "abysmal?" I'm asking - did something bad happen there?IU’s recent history of hiring Coaches is abysmal. I too don’t have a lot of confidence in IU getting the right Coach and then having patience with that Coach to change the culture.
I am talking specifically about Indiana basketball. They are entitled to be a top 5 team in the nation, just ask them.Is the recent hiring of their new football coach "abysmal?" I'm asking - did something bad happen there?
Or are you talking specifically about basketball?
Indiana's AD is Scott Dolson who got the job in July of 2020. He was an internal promotion who had been at IU for 11 years in various roles, including athletic department COO. (Sounds like an accountant to me, but I don't know him).
When Dolson hired Mike Woodson out of the NBA in 2021, Dolson immediately created an Assistant AD job for Thad Matta - specifically for basketball. Apparently, Woodson had zero understanding of all the NCAA rules around running a program. Matta left for Butler in the spring of 2022.
My guess is that Indiana is going to pay big money for a top coach, like TJ Oetzelberger (although Iowa State has tried to lock him up)
Indiana is still a premium opportunity. But I do hope they screw it up yet again.
Speaking of arrogant, what an arrogant post. Indiana basketball hasn’t been relevant for years. Collins has all he needs as far as NIL at NU. But you want to know if he would be interested even though he wouldn’t be one of your top choices? When are Indiana people going to realize that the job isn’t what it used to be? 18-22 year old’s of today don’t even know what Indiana as a powerhouse looks like.Dolson wanted Woody gone after last season’s epic fail, but the money people along with BOT Prez, Quinn Buckner insisted not only in keeping him, but giving him a million Buck raise…and an NIL budget over $5 million. Lots of talent purchased and little to no coaching happened…for the 2nd year in a row.
One of my all-time favorite players, Woody has been just so arrogant as HC. Surrounded himself with a bunch of “yes” men. Woody ignored Matta and didn’t even know Dane Fife, who Dolson brought in for Woody to lean on, had played for IU.
Do you guys think CCC would be interested? Probably not my first or 2nd choice, but IU could, and has done worse.

I mean, this is probably not true, right? I don’t know the inner workings of the NIL operation at NU, but just looking at who NU basketball picks up in the portal makes me assume NIL isn’t exactly a competitive differentiator. (Not to mention the inability to retain the best talent on the football roster, or replace them with comparable talent). Surely Collins could have a better team this year with more NIL to address Boo’s departure (in particular, a really good transfer PG)Collins has all he needs as far as NIL at NU.
Yeah, he’s perfectly satisfied with NUs NIL commitment to the basketball program.I mean, this is probably not true, right? That said, IU is a joke. The fact that they’ve been relegated to little brother in their own state is hilarious.
Thanks for the additional info about what was going on down there.Dolson wanted Woody gone after last season’s epic fail, but the money people along with BOT Prez, Quinn Buckner insisted not only in keeping him, but giving him a million Buck raise…and an NIL budget over $5 million. Figures. He never seemed that good a a coach
Only top 5? Natinal Champion every year!!!I am talking specifically about Indiana basketball. They are entitled to be a top 5 team in the nation, just ask them.

Sir, after the John Groce and Bruce Weber eras I will never complain about competent basketball. In the last four seasons we’ve won a ton of games, won a conference title and made the elite 8. In my book those are great results and I have had a ton of fun watching those teams. College sports today means a lot of roster turnover. I miss the old days, but they don’t exist right now.Yeah, he’s perfectly satisfied with NUs NIL commitment to the basketball program.
Of course it’s not as much as the Illini spend every year to bring in a brand new roster that completely underperforms and no fans have a connection to.
Public schools aren’t disclosing anything for NIL, either. You hear unsubstantiated rumors, but there’s no transparency at public schools for their NIL, either.NIL situation at NU is probably not very competitive, but NU, being a private university, doesn't have to disclose anything, so people can say whatever they want.
I think you’re underestimating what the new revenue sharing model will be. There will still be additional financial enticements beyond the direct revenue sharing. Teams won’t stop just because they have to demonstrate “market value” with a clearing house. They’ll just find a way around it.If NU was limited in NIL funds they certainly aren't going forward under the new revenue sharing model. Their limitations in basketball recruiting are the same as they are in football - academics matter. Not only do the recruits need to have academic chops, they must be in a position to meet minimum course requirements to obtain a degree - and the degree is largely what it is all about for NU's recruits since they won't be getting hall passes. This has largely meant that recruits are either fresh out of HS, 2nd year transfers or grad students, all of whom must be prepared to actually attend classes along with playing basketball. Limits the pool dramatically.
Michigan is more the poster child for buying a team. Most of the minutes going to guys at IL are home-grown, including Jacukonis, Ivisic, Riley, Gibbs and Morez Johnson.Of course it’s not as much as the Illini spend every year to bring in a brand new roster that completely underperforms and no fans have a connection to.

Yeah I’m tracking. If you’re talking about all of college basketball, I completely agree. I was referring to peer Big Ten schools, where I think they’ll all spend the full revenue sharing amount and then a lot more NIL on top (under the table if needed)While I understand your point, a few comments. First, a lot of the current upper echelon teams in basketball do not have access to big TV money to offset revenue sharing so they are reliant on NIL. Given the numbers involved, those are big numbers to go back to donors and sponsors year in and year out. Second, NU will likely not want to play in the big dollar league for elite players. Those are players that typically look at school as a means to an NBA end, school optional. NU isn't in to that plus paying really big contracts isn't consistent with NU values (Yes, I know it may be consistent with say Duke values.). NU should be solidly upper quartile(?) on the money rankings across all schools based on its access to the Big Ten TV money which should allow it to pay out the full revenue share amount. Best guess.
