The Screamer Has Been Silenced

Guys they didn't shut her up or kick her out. They just were like ya let's not have this constant high pitch shreik anymore. She's still welcome to come to games and cheer as loud as she wants. Shreiking is just ended. I don't really have a problem with that because the shrieking really only has a place at free throws. Cheer loud stand up and show up that's great. High pitch wailing excessively is a little much. Especially heard over TV.

Kid, there are definitely two very strong opinions on whether Emily should be silenced or not as you can see by the passion on this topic. I understand you points, but I am of the opinion that:

1) it is de facto censorship. What is going to stop someone to complain about me or you, yelling too loud, not throwing verbal bouquets at the opposition Coach, letting a Ref have at when there is a bad call, standing and being told to sit down, booing both NU and the opposition team? As a fan, NU nice is not me. Slippery slope here.

2) as I have repeatedly said, she is in the STUDENT section. Their job is supposed to be to make noise. If she was planted in the center of the Wilson Club, I would have a different opinion. To be clear, I wouldn’t want he4 directly behind me, but I sure want her in the student section.

3) You are correct that they didn’t kick her out of the arena and as far as we know didn’t tell her she can’t cheer. I wasn’t there last Wednesday, so I don’t have a good handle on how vigorous her cheering was, but how would you feel as the President of student Support organization and you were told YOUR particular form of support was not welcome. Suck the life right out of you?

4) I am betting most of the people doing the complaining, including on this board, are NOT regulars at the basketball games. It’s about the networks bitching and other people believing it gives NU a bad look. Sorry, if it bothers people on TV.

5) people routinely rip students for not attending and supporting NU Athletics, but it’s only if those students act and behave according to what they find acceptable. Hilarious. Is there any University in major athletics more PC than NU?

I could go on, but it’s not going to change anyone’s mind on either side. It’s a polarizing discussion.

when will we find out xyzbob's new screen name?
After an intense competitiion with 30+ submissions, we settled on IGNORE as Xob's new screenname, since he always says " if you don't like me, ignore is your friend". Thus, he will be everyone's friend now! I actually think it is an upgrade from his current screenname, but only time will tell...

Lol. Ok, guess you opinion is the right one, supported by what? A ridiculous photo that somehow proves the point because the administration has the “brains” to put a doner in front of the student section. Where are your seats? Does she bother you? Do you encourage everyone to vote and then tell them who they should vote for?

Sometimes people would complain about “Nerdwestern” are the reason policies are changed and it remains Nerdwestern.
Because it is about as lame of a thing at a sporting event I've ever witnessed. It sucks the life out the place by making people uncomfortable. It is disconcerting, irritating, does nothing to pump up the crowd or the team. It is a toolirific sh!t show, to be honest. You know this yourself, but are taking the modern liberal stance of needing to protect everyone's right to express themself how they want. That part is fine. Defend that right of you want, but you can also acknowledge that the skreaching in and of itself is awful. Her right to skreach is one thing, but the act itself simply sucks and will turn far more off to the game and the program than it will the alternative.

Sometimes the simple answer is what is correct. If the idea of conformity bothers you, perhaps look at it as simply etiquette... acceptable and normal behavior at a popularly attended function.

Uh, there is a difference between an honest discussion and the attacking back and forth that has been going on ITT. If you can't see that, I can't help you.

Interesting definition of trolling. Clearly, there are more than one or two here that are disappointed in NU and the way this has been handled. You disagree with those people. Therefore, those people are trolls. And your label of troll is without any value.

If only those insulted people would get off their entitled, fat asses and make some noise. I wonder what fraction of 7500 would be needed to drown her out?

Nah, too much fandom required. Let’s just censor, give more tickets to the opponents and enjoy medicrocy.

Where are the fan card police when they are actually needed?

Whose welcome?

You are. Just for this. Not in general.

Let me help you again. Reread the string that started this, you know, where you made the snarky Turk wicker comment and it should all be simple enough for you to understand. And your welcome.

Could you please sit down during these last second (potentially game winning) free throws by the opposition? Your standing is irritating and blocking my view of the game. And stop yelling. I can't hear the free throws. Consider it simple etiquette. ;)

Nope. People expressing their opinion civilly is not trolling. You'e smart, and should be able to identify how WickerTurk's posts do not express a position civilly the vast majority of the time. He posts to elicit a negative reaction from others, which is 100% trolling, imo.

I think your opinion is wrong. He posts contrary to most of your posts. He is often attacked. And he takes an aggressive posture. Definitely not a troll any more than you are.

Me being called a liberal, clearly we haven’t met. I understand you don’t like it. I don’t want her sitting 5 feet from me either. You are basing your argument on far more people being turned off by her than being enthusiastic. I certainly am not conceding that point as it hasn’t been anywhere near proven, but even if true it doesn’t negate her right to express her fandom anyway she feels fit to, as long as it isn’t vulgar or in violation of the ticket purchasers written terms of purchase.

You argument is basically that shrieking is a shit show, that I and others don’t like so it should be ceased. Forget how she wants to express herself, doesn’t matter, I don’t like it and neither do others so stop. I’ll ask you again, do you sit by her? Is she impacting your enjoyment of the game at WR? If I am a liberal because I defend her right to make noise anywhere she see fit as long as it doesn’t violate terms of purchase, then cool, I will live with that.

This discussion reminds me of the ways people around here try to censor others. How did NU generate so many anti-Constitution people?

Like I said, you wanna defend her right to shreak, I've really got no argument. I'm sure she could go back to games, shreak, get escorted out, take it to court and win a trial. Of this, I have little doubt. But, do you LIKE, or enjoy, or prefer the streaking to other more normal forms of cheering passionately for the team? I believe the streaking brings negativity and awkwardness into the vibe of the arena and am glad it will not continue. As far as evidence... really? You really believe that if polled, the majority of people watching or listening to games in person, TV or via radio would say that they PREFER her shreaking to more common forms of exuberant cheering? I call BS. There is no way you actually believe that. But lets do a hearing test because maybe you are born differently than me, like that meme from last year where the same sound is heard differently by two groups of people.

Which do you prefer?

Censorship? Come on, man. She’s shrieking at a basketball game, not orating a political manifesto.

I have said repeatedly that I wouldn’t want her sitting next me. I also never once said I or the majority of people would prefer her shrieking to common forms of exuberant cheering. I am defending her right to cheer how she wants to not how the majority of people think she should. Also, I have never once personally been put off by her noise either at the game or especially watching on my TV. I find it ludicrous that the majority of people sitting on their couch are bothered by her. They are watching on their TV!

As far as my hearing, you might have a point. My kids always have repeat things to me.

The “Man” tells us what we can do at these events. Don’t boo, don’t stand, lay off the ref’s and be sure you behave. Being local here, do you know how many people I know that are laughing their ass off at NU? They do it because they know it gets under my skin, but they also mock the silliness of it all. These are people we are trying to put in these seats occupied by Iowa fans. NU brought this bad publicity on themselves.

Or those annoyed could cheer loudly. Again, 7500 seats v one young lady. It’s damn shameful.

She would lose. NU is a private entity that can regulate speech however it wishes as long as it doesn't do so for an illegal reason.

Legality and freedom of speech is not the question here. The question here is simple: what problem do we want to solve? When the building is loud, you can't hear any one fan. When the building is quiet, you can. Far too often, we have been able to. Some find it annoying, some don't mind. But I'd rather NU focus on one problem than the other, and I'm disappointed that they brought bad vibes onto a program that's producing enough of its own these days.

Does she have the right to shreik? Hell yes no doubt. Should it be a problem she was asked to stop? Hell no. Would I have a problem if people were like you can't do this or we will throw you a real fan who shows up to every game, yes. That's not what happened it was "can we not do that?". That's perfectly fine they're not diminishing her enthusiasm or free speech just asking her to express it in another way.

It is quite interesting that ever since she stopped screaming, we've been losing. I'm all for her getting back to work. Maybe she can scream us to an automatic bid.
We are 0-7 since the program effectively cuffed her. We deserve to lose after the program went after one of its best fans. Didnt the program have better things to do than get swept into a public relations nightmare? They brought this record losing streak on themselves.
The only reasonable excuse to get involved is if it actually affected our own players. That could have been one possibility.

But welcome back screamer

Just wanted to indorm everyone that the Natuonal Trolling Service has issued a Severe Troll Advisory for this message board, effective immediatelty. Trolling has already been onserved at several radar locations., from faked righteous indignation over anthem protests to posting repeated nonsense over the Screamer. Posters are advised to take cover and ignore the trolling as much as possible. If it is not possible to seek shelter, it is advised to make fun of the troll as much as you can, as that should lessen the affects of the trolling. However, you should never try to drive through the trolling by actually taking the troll seriously, and this could result in the loss of posting reputation...
