Worst loss since we helped Duke break its losing streak and gave up biggest comeback to Mich. St.

I feel an awesome Floridalum free board poll coming up: “Worst loss of the Fitz Era?”

So many awful choices.
I was thinking about this after Saturday.

I feel like there's probably a few reasonable ways to define worst (lowest level of competition, biggest missed opportunity, biggest gap in team quality based on advanced metrics, made me personally feel the worst in the moment, etc.), but I have to imagine this SIU team is down pretty low if you're going by quality of opponent.

As others have said, I think the other contenders by that measure are the other FCS losses (although I think UNH was probably a bit better than ISU and SIU, plus the extenuating circumstances), Duke '07, and Army?

Depending on your definition, both MSU 2006 and MSU 2020 should be on the list.

Also the Michigan losses to Brady Hoke were ripe for the picking.

Akron 2018 is probably my pick, with ISU 2016 second and UNH 2006 my third.

The Akron loss was the one evening I definitely lost my shit on the board. But a lot of us did, and at least I could blame mine partially on potent beer.

I was at that Akron game. The Cats were up 21-0 at halftime conservative running off-tackle plays and screens. The family wanted to see the halftime show, and then bail afterwards due to the boredom of everything well in hand. Ensuite, apres nous, le deluge . . .

Is that last sentence French for “you can blame me for that shitflood”? Sorry, but I don’t speak the language.

For me, in regards to most painful losses, it's:
MSU 2006
Duke 2007 (broke 22 game losing streak)
2010 Purdue (chance to start 6-0 under the lights)
2012 @PSU (McGloin, again, could've started 6-0, again...blown 11 point lead in 4Q)
2015 @Michigan (could've started 6-0...again, obliterated)
2022 SIU
2018 Akron (horrific turnovers)
2010 @PSU (up 21-0 just before end of 1H, McGloin dominates after)
2020 @MSU (Kyric fumble...)
2011 @Illinois (blew 18-point lead)
2011 @Army
2013 Michigan (awful, awful game)
2014 Michigan (M00N)
2016 Illinois St
2017 @Duke (embarrassing)
2018 Duke (embarrassing at home)
2019 Purdue (battle of Aidens)
2021 MSU (the beginning of JON)
2021 @Duke
2021 @Nebraska (just embarrassing)
2021 @Illinois (Bert embarrasses us)

For heartbreaking, it's:
Auburn 2009 in the Outback
2013 OSU (Colter got the 1st down...)
2012 @Michigan (Hail Mary to OT loss)
2013 @Nebraska (Hail Mary)
2016 Western Michigan (Thorson fumble)
2012 Nebraska
2018 Michigan (first time Harbaugh came back from down 17)
2019 @Nebraska (it was PI!)

and for disappointing, it's:
2020 OSU
Mizzou 2008 (why did you kick it to Maclin???)
2011 Michigan (Denard owns the 2H)
UNH 2006
2015 Iowa (obliterated)
2015 Tennessee (obliterated)
2016 @OSU
2017 @Wisconsin
2018 ND
Michigan 2007 (turnovers on last 4 possessions)
'Cuse 2009 (we really let Greg Paulus dominate us)
@IU 2008 (Kafka coming in for injured Bacher and launching a "pass" 15 yards backwards)
2010 MSU (up 17-0 in late 2Q)
2014 NIU
2014 Illinois

I'd put Army up there as well.
and we are reminded of it every time we hear the cringe "move...those...chains" which is a terrible theft of a way better version at West Point: "Mr. Referee, move those chains for another first down...(all cadets in unison) ARMY!"

Wait, you given this enough consideration? I need more.

I assume these are only the most painful losses since Fitz started in 2006.

2010 Wisconsin was painful. Persa out hurt. Evan Watkins ineffective at QB with multiple interceptions. Cain Colter redshirt burned. Wisconsin steam rolls NU 70 to 23 and it actually could have been a WHOLE LOT WORSE. I really thought Wisconsin was going to hang 80+, but they cruised with reserves and there was no scoring in the fourth quarter.

I was there for the Army game as well. Horrible loss but wonderful tour of West Point before and great meal on campus after the game.
