All of the unsavory stuff about Sulky is true. He’s human, after all. I just don’t see the point of all the grave dancing here. I guess it makes some people feel good.

The world is filled with folks who feel they've been wronged by people they don't know.
And sometimes its for doing things that they themselves would do in a heartbeat.

Starters Minutes

I was just looking, and Blake Smith had played in one game (for less than a minute) at this point last season. Now, we can argue over whether he was ready for significant playing time or not last year, but he did make valuable contributions in important games last year.

Meanwhile Martinelli was a known quantity last year at this time but had only made it to 25 minutes once. Pretty clearly he was ready to go when he needed more time. If you go back to his freshman year, he'd played in just three games - for a little over 20 minutes total - in the non-conference schedule. Barnhizer's trajectory was similar, with just three games for 19 minutes in his freshman year going into the B10 season.

Both Martinelli and Barnhizer ended up playing a bit more in the B10 games in their freshman years (Martinelli more so, but that was likely due to Barnhizer's injuries) than they did in the pre-conference schedule. While they weren't world beaters, at least they could come in.

FWIW, Windham has played 10 games (150 minutes) and Jello has played 11 games (103 minutes). I think it's safe to say that if we're forced to use those guys extensively, NU may suffer due to losing the stars ahead of them, but they've at least had enough significant game experience to be able to step in and contribute.

Heading into 2025 and conference play, the Wildcats sit about 12th in a very balanced league.
In the last 4 weeks, Maryland, Michigan, Oregon, Northwestern and Michigan State have improved position while Purdue, Indiana and Ohio State have slipped somewhat.

"Coach Lester has been super transparent," Sullivan said. "It's the name of the game these days. You've got to compete. If you're scared of competing, then you shouldn't be playing the game. So I'm here, staying, playing for Iowa, and I'm going to continue to compete to the best of my abilities."

🤣
What a fraud.

I didn't care much when Sullivan and Gill left for Iowa. But if posters have bad feelings, particularly about Sullivan, based on his alleged reasons for leaving NU and/or comments he made on his way out the door, I could not care less if they lambast him on this Board. This Board is for intelligent (and often unintelligent) Cats-related musings.

However, I loathe Iowa. Ever since the Hayden Fry days. So, while I don't wish players ill - - which, of course, has no friggin' impact on them unless they are reading this Board during the game and give a shiite what AtlantaCat says about them - - I was pleased to see that the two ex-Cats played such a significant role in Iowa's loss.

My personal view, I liked the game (both college football and major league baseball) better before players had so much freedom of movement, but I also am convinced that the guys doing the heavy lifting, and sometimes sacrificing health, have deserved a larger share of the revenues they play such a role in generating and should have as much choice as possible in where they play/work.
Exactly. I like the games better myself with less player movement. I also understand that what I like should not take precedence over another individuals freedom to make a living as he/she sees fit.

No kidding. How can anyone have a problem with that?
If anything, Sullivan's decision to leave was vindicated by what Lujan, Wright and Lausch did this past season.

2) NU’s QB situation being worse than Iowa’s is precisely what makes his decision so dumb
I said Iowas's is the only one in the B1G worse than ours. The only one. Like 16 better. But not Iowa. As bad as he is, he had no choice but Iowa, right? And he got to play a lot, including a bowl game and a decisive win over us. He made the right decision instead of being 4th string. Maybe 3rd since Gray got hurt but who knew that?

I don't get too worked up about what a 22 ish kid says. He was butt hurt because he felt he'd earned it after being understudy for 2 years. So he ran his mouth. But, he got beat out fair and square and wanted to play.

GCG, I know you like the last word, so go ahead. I promise not to respond anymore

Enlighten us.
He wanted to play and felt he would have had a better chance at that under the previous staff than this one. Figured out pretty quickly in spring ball he wasn’t going to start and went to Iowa with a friend for a more likely playing opportunity. He stayed for spring ball to compete and felt the current coaching staff had made up their mind before the competition and knew they were planning on bringing in a transfer. He commited primarily due to Fitz. He felt he had a shot at starting prior to spring ball and the current coaching staff felt differently. So he transferred to Iowa which has a few personal connections there and a real shot at playing time.

Dude was not going to play here. I’m not going to say he should have been the starting qb but I can totally understand the transfer. He got pushed way down the depth chart post Fitz. I still stand by my comments that the original post was not necessary and a bad look.

all I see in that video is the entire left side of the Iowa offensive line falling on their faces as if they were shaving points.
The worst collective blocking I've ever seen.

Mizzou laying 2.5, ahead by 3.
Mizzou timed that well. It almost looked like the snap came early, or Sully was not ready for it. But the ball was in his hand and that Mizzou defender was already airborne over the LOS and about a half-second away from landing in Sully's lap.

I understand. He wants to compete for playing time. What better place than Iowa? Arguably the only worse QB situation tha ours in the B1G, and bottom 10, maybe bottom 5 in FBS. Probably worse than 25% of FCS. Like us in 2019, 2021, 22, 24.

Why stay here and be 4th string on the next worst QB situation in the B1G?

What I'm saying is I don't care because educated eyes have told me that he's no better than 4th string on this team. I don't care. Why do you care?

1) Why are you defending a kid who left NU for Iowa, then also talked shit both on his way out and on the field?
2) NU’s QB situation being worse than Iowa’s is precisely what makes his decision so dumb.

Starters Minutes

I'm not so willing to write off Windham and Ciaravino this year. I think they both can play. I don't think either is far behind Mullins, whose shooting limitations are holding him down.

As it stands, Collins is using Mullins as the sole sub for Barnhizer, Martinelli, Leach and Berry. Thats fine until anybody gets hurt or in foul trouble - then we have to play either Windham, Ciaravino or Smith.
The young guys can play. They aren’t needed to play, because the old but still young guys are healthy and excellent.

Depth is not playing you 10 capable guys. Depth is having someone available if one of your top 6 or 8 go down.

I believe they some combination of Windham and Smith and Ciaravino could step in if a non-Nicholson got hurt. (And, realistically, Nick would probably get a lot of time at the center position if Nicholson did get hurt, and those three would still get the minutes.)

That was literally Sullivan’s quote in response to a question about Iowa bringing in a transfer QB to compete for the starting job in 2025, just removing the “staying at Iowa” part.
