Notebook: Braun stays tight-lipped about starters ahead of season opener

I didn't know about Adeyi's injury. With the loss of Heard, Hollis, Joseph, and now Adeyi, it seems like we're going to be seeing some new faces in the secondary. I will be watching that second corner spot on Saturday; it seems likely that MOH and Gabbert would go after the new guy.

Also a huge bummer to lose Hagarty. I think we've got more guys ready to rotate at DE, so hopefully we can weather that loss and hopefully he's able to get back.

Sullivan the better QB at IA scrimmage?

IE at NU bad enough. When I went to AZ for grad school I had a class from the guy that wrote the Thermo textbook that was used at NU. Not soo bad as he actually spoke English. Of course then there was Heat Transfer....

Usually a professor with those credentials had a German or Eastern European surname. Now, My guess is Asian.

Kind of an interesting story. My daughter-in-law is native Chinese with a Master's in math. She and my son send my granddaughter to a supplemental math school. Very common Asian/Indian practice in DC. Anyway most of the schools are run and taught by Asians/Indians with the class makeup the same. My son and daughter-in-law were not happy with the progress she was making and tried a few different schools. They finally landed at a school owned and taught by Russian staff. Turns out they are fantastic at teaching fundamental mathematics. I don't know why the difference but there you go.

Anyone up to speed on Miami OH?

Saturday feels like a game that could go either way. I think I saw the line favoring us -2.5 which isn't exactly a vote of confidence from the book. I don't know about who Miami lost or gained since last season but they had an 11-win season last year including the MAC championship. They apparently lost to App State 13-9 in their bowl game but my general impression of App State is they are typically capable of fielding a very formidable team.
6th year QB (Gabbert) who seems to be solid (missed a bunch of games late last year with a leg injury). Solid offensive line play + defensive front 7 (couple guys from those units on awards watch lists).

Picked to win the MAC again (though probably closer to a toss up with Toledo than a run away).

They should be 10+ win good again this year if Gabbert is healthy.

Probably will be better than a couple Big Ten teams; I'm definitely in the camp that this would be as good of a win as a win against Duke or the lower rated Big Ten teams on our schedule.

If we look good against them (and win), I'd think we should be in good shape to go bowling or more this year. Tough to get them at the start of the season though where having a 6th year QB helps them a ton.

There was actually a bit of insight into my comment on books without pictures. I am not a believer in the one school is better than the other theory - depends on the individual, major, circumstance - but I do believe that books now are far less "dry" than the texts I used - even engineering texts - and that individual professors may have more expectations depending on the quality of their students. Within the Big Ten footprint, however, I believe, at least for engineering undergrads, that the course quality and expectations are more or less the same. Now if we were talking about MIT or Cal Tech I would have a different opinion. Another level.

I think describing it as a toss up game is the optimistic point of view for NU fans. A win against Miami of Ohio this week would make me very pleased. We'll see.
Mohio is a really good team. If I were vegas I'd favor them by 10pts. Just as good or better than duke for sure. I'm hoping cats win but most likely a tough game any way you look at it. What our o looks like with luhan leading is the big mystery 🤔

Big Ten Season Tie Breaking Rules

With the new 18 team conference there is a very good chance for a few teams to be tied for first place at the end of the season.

Here are the rules if that happens.

The list of tiebreaking criteria in order, according to the Big Ten, is:
  1. Head-to-head results during the regular season
  2. Record against all common conference opponents
  3. Record against mutual conference opponents with best record
  4. Best Big Ten winning percentage of conference opponents
  5. Highest ranking by SportSource Analytics after the regular season
  6. Random draw of tied teams
