Sign Of The Times

What makes it an unfair competition? Just because you lost out on the competition doesn’t make it unfair.
More like a stacked deck competition where coaches have particular hot buttons that sway the selection process. Add to that the bringing in some portal candidate that the kid would suddenly find himself behind. Just take a look at the Sullivan situation here at NU last year Thought he had a track and then finding out that they were bringing a new OC that has a different take on what he needs and then yet another grad transfer in front of him. For him that didn't look like a little fair competition but rather a stacked deck against him

Props to my son

I doubt he has the "build", my sense (and I am not locked into this, I would love to be proven "too pessimistic") is that he stays in Europe or if comes to America to someplace like Fordham or Hofstra or Wagner (this is me naming programs near me that I know about, I am sure there are many others) but, because he is pretty sharp in the head, becomes a very good coach. But he is 14 for all I know he will announce he wants to do pre-med like everyone in my family except for me (blood...yech....).

And of course, at his age he could build up and out, time will tell, he is only in 9th grade.

The almost creepy thing is not only does he follow the NBA and his favorite players, he also knows stuff about the G-League that no normal non-obsessed guy would know. He knew that Jacob (JACOB not Obi) played (and plays) Topin for the Knicks and he sends me data about how Boo Buie is doing. He knows more about Boo than I do and I was his biggest fan.

I give him a one percent chance of playing in the Bigs, but he could definitely turn his "Charlie Hustle" into a coaching gig he is freaky enough about the sport.

Who knows? He is having fun and staying clean and studious, and I will never complain about that.

Go Cats.

Props to my son

I never thought I would have an athlete in the family, we are all medical nerds (except for me, I faint at the sight of a drop of blood, so sad too bad). But my 14-year-old had really taken basketball to heart and even though he is only 14 they make him play in the 15–16-year-old league and in last week's tournament he was names MVP for the finals game where he scored 27 points and snagged 24 rebounds.

Before anyone gets too excited, no there is not a chance he could go to NU, he is not that good, the league is very good, competitive, but I know enough about bball to know what limits are. Maybe, MAYBE he could be second string at someplace like Lehigh or Colgate.

But basketball - which he only got into recently - has really changed and improved him, More self-confidence and self-discipline,

So, props to my youngest!

Go Cats!

ps - I will edit to add - he is an absolute f*cker on defense. I can't get more delighted, So many times some prima donna from another team will come down lah-dee-dah dribbling between his legs and behind his back (which is fine, but do it because it is effective not to show off to the cheerleaders) and my son will casually guard him and WHACK - ball rolls out of bounds. The prima donna will give a stare like "Bro, wassup?". Back on the court WHACK. No foul, all clean, just no bs. Probably my favorite part of his game. It is so funny to see the opponents reactions, they are like "hey, what are you doing"?
Well he still has some years to develop and if he can play D ( Playing D is like breathing. Cannot live without it) There is still a shot

It’s Fine

They played poorly. Just like most players on Sunday. I am not why this is controversial or way off base.

CCC addressed this. He said KJ and Gelo were not getting time earlier because they weren’t picking up the defensive assignments as quick as he felt they should. Watch games before the turn of the calendar that this was painfully obvious. He also stated they are quickly improving in this aspect and implied they could in fact be more of a part of the rotation for the reasons you outline.
Right. That was earlier in the season. We can find pretty quickly how well they have picked up on defense after 15 games. But you have to play them for significant stretches against better players, and with better players.

Putting Gelo and KJ with Hunger would go pretty bad.

NU looks to find answers to offensive issues

Very clearly - not sure why PWB even brings this up.
I have no idea how that loss can be pinned on CCC. That’s more ridiculous that pinning it on Ty and Big Matt. It would be equally ridiculous to blame the Defensive wizard on our staff for our horrendous defense on Sunday.

I will shout it out again, almost everybody except Gelo sucked Sunday. Players and Coaches. The HC doesn’t get perplexed by what the opposition does that this level. This isn’t some novice AAU Coaches. Let’s not make more out of it that needs to be. Bad game, bad outcome, flush it.

ILL expects 18 starters to return.

Why would he go to Iowa? More corn?
Cause he's an Iowa grad and even has a Hawkeye tattoo on his leg?

Sure, the "Tiger Hawk" tattoo seemed like a great idea at the time. That was 1990, when Bielema, then a walk-on defensive lineman for the Hawkeyes under legendary coach Hayden Fry, sprang for the ink after receiving a scholarship as a sophomore. To celebrate, he got the iconic Iowa logo tattooed on his left calf with the words "Believe" and "Achieve" on opposite ends of a giant "I."

Bielema soon had the pedigree of a Hawkeye for life. He became a senior captain in 1992, returned to Iowa City shortly afterward to become a graduate assistant, and served as a linebacker coach under Fry and his successor, Kirk Ferentz, for six seasons.

I’m not really blaming those two for the Purdue loss. Plenty of blame to go around in that game.

Maybe CC wanted to send them a message that he expects more from them. Not like they produced in the minutes they played.

I don’t agree with everything Collins does, but overall he’s earned some slack for his job the last few years.

My main point is that in a tough Big 10 NU won’t make the tourney unless MN and TB step up and contribute on a more consistent basis.

To PWB's point, you should try some new lineup combinations, such as giving KJ and Gelo time with the first team. We are too one-dimensional on offense, with a key missing ingredient of a consistent outside shooting threat. We also struggle at guard against the press. There is evidence that we have assets in place to counteract those issues. Why not try it for 5-10 minutes?

Talk to Collins. He's the fellow who played Nicholson a total of 7:44 after that opening segment.
He's also the fellow who played Berry a total of 12.5 minutes and only 1:07 in the 2nd half.

Meanwhile Martinelli went 0 for the first half and Barnhizer played his worst game by far.
Similarly, Collins had his worst game of the year - by quite a bit.

It’s bizarre to me that people would try to pin the loss on Berry and Nicholson because they didn't score in 13 minutes or so each. Well, maybe not bizarre - just waaaaay off.
PWB - do you really believe that changing lineups is a guaranteed way to change the outcome of a game? It’s what you imply every single time we lose, and more generally with your +/-. Do you really think that sitting Barnhizer and Martinelli (who were of course playing poorly) and leaving in Berry and Nicholson would have changed the outcome? Do you really think another coach could come in to NU and figure out a better mix of playing time and do materially better?

ILL expects 18 starters to return.

“Illinois’ fourth-year coach is contractually forbidden from accepting another Big Ten head coaching job, per the language of an extension he signed on April 23, 2023.”

Caveat: if Josh Whitman is not the AD, then the buyout is cut in half and the Big Ten Clause is cut.

Although there isn’t a contractually agreed buyout, my guess is that there is some crazy magic number that Illinois would be willing to accept as a buyout to let him go to Iowa. But it’s probably so high that Iowa would never consider paying it.
