WAS DOWN AND DISTANCE VISIBLE THIS WEEK?
The pickup is the new Costco dad-mobile. We’ll get a three-row pickup in the next decade. You’re right. I thought for a minute, I had accidentally stumbled onto the University of Tennessee message board until I realized no one had mentioned their pickup truck.
The ball was coming out and his knee never touched the ground. Watched the multiple replays. We got screwed.Watching from the north stands, I thought I saw the ball moving around before he went down in real time. As I watched it, I remember thinking, "Oh boy, a fumble's coming!" And sure enough it did.
Yes. He is still the BBMOC (beloved big man on campus).Must have left a happy man.
You’re right. I thought for a minute, I had accidentally stumbled onto the University of Tennessee message board until I realized no one had mentioned their pickup truck.Good Lord, I thought your original post was sarcasm. It took a grand total of one loss this year before the the lunacy starts. Braun literally saved NU from being a complete laughingstock. Can we at least see what he can do with a real NIL program? Next years struggles are on Schill not Braun.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a quarterback sweep work. And that wasn’t a busted play, it was clearly a quarterback sweep.
We spent three years or so criticizing a mediocre offensive line, and then lost our best one to the portal. On the QB sweep, literally one Wildcat player (Covey) executed his block successfully.
On that play Lang, who is a tall guy who motions, and not a tight end, lined up in a three point stance, a true tight end. The left side defensive end basically bull rushed Lang immediately, driving him into both Wrather and Thompson. So one Duke DE took out the three down linemen in the direction of the play. Thompson was trying to engage the wrong guy anyway, and his assignment was in the backfield immediately.
Gordon totally whiffed on his dude — who made the tackle. And lead blocker Porter actually laid a decent shoulder on a dude, but he had to deal with three. Again, three guys were neutralized by one Blue Devil, basically on the snap.
Wright went backwards rather than diving, meaning that there was no choice but to call a pass on fourth. If he had gone to the ground when it was apparent that nothing good was coming (which was immediately), it could have been 4th and 5 and the run would be a possibility. But there were literally five untouched Blue defenders running full speed at him — and he went backwards trying to make a play. You can’t really blame him, because his coach and his OL and his TEs all let him down. But he could have been better.
So, it was a bad call, executed poorly, by a team without much blocking talent. A triple-whammy.
I’ve watched the play 30 times because I hate myself.
I feel like if you know all of that, why not simplify the game plan in an early game like this. Wright as a dual threat, use designed QB runs more, and then just give Porter 20+ carries.Defense is always ahead of offense in the early season. Wright didn’t get the benefit of spring ball with this team and system and it shows. Maybe he and the O improve as they get more reps but likely not significantly as Wright is a guy playing for his third team which probably speaks to his true potential.
If Lausch is a guy who fits Luhan’s system, he should get reps next week. Regardless, I am a little concerned that my prediction of a 4-8 season may have been a bit rosy.
They’ve both got veteran sounding boards in Harlon Barnett and Bill O’Boyle. I don’t think there’s any reason to be concerned about McGarigle. He’s a man! He’s 40!What worries me is the lack of experience at the top level of the progam.
Our Head Coach is new to this whole head coach thing and has not coached at the Big Ten level apart from the extremely unique situation of last year where - to give him credit - he prevented a total program collapse. But now it's his transfers, his freshmen, his spring practice, his summer practice. I also don't know if Skip Holtz is still around to give pointers. Hopefully he will pick up the phone if called.
Lujan, while having done the job, has not done it above the FCS level. It's like making the transition from college to the NFL. Not everyone can do it.
Tim McGarigle, first season coordinating anything (though he seems to be doing a fine job based on games one and two).
I just wish one - any one - of the three was in his late 50s and who had been around the block for 30 years.
Glad you posted this.I am confused by the timeout decision making at the end of the game by both teams after the same play
After the failed third down why in the world did Braun want a timeout instead of making Duke burn theirs? Sure Duke could've burned the clock down then called it but no instead of that Duke calls it immediately leaving us time. But why was Braun calling for a timeout? Surely he didn't think we would move the ball 70 yards downfield in 18 seconds.
Refs are always rotated depending on where the game is played. If we were in Durham last night we would have had BIG TEN referring crew. Also in bowl games you have a crew that is not affiliated with either conference calling the games. How is it that a game involving an ACC team has ACC referees? Inquiring minds want to know.
Mel Tucker and Tom Allen both won since 2020. Also have a Brady Hoke appearance. More often than not it’s an award for who exceeded expectations the most. Braun 100% deserves it but so do the leaders of that team last year.Coach of the Year.
He’ll be fine.
