Michigan

I grew up in Michigan the son of 2 NU grads. My father was a dentist who went to NU for both undergrad and dental school. My mother did undergrad elsewhere but nursing school at NU. They both were proud of where they went but never boasted about it. We were surrounded in an area that thought Michigan was the greatest at everything. My father called it "peninsula disease". As I got older I appreciated his point. When you become as arrogant or ignorant as what the Michigan culture pushes you are not open minded enough to appreciate what others bring to the table. This is a major weakness. It also can make people feel they are above things. I believe this has continued to haunt Michigan athletics, This is evident with the latest "Michigan Man" cheating. Let's not forget the Fab 5 who never existed due to being on Mr. Martin's payroll. What other program that has 1/2 of a modern day National Championship in their whole history (Nebraska would argue zero) that would consider themselves one of the top National powers? I consider modern football 1960 forward.

FOOTBALL Wrigley Field

Wrigley was open today for reporters and outlets to take B roll and photos, I stopped by. Lord knows I'm not a photographer but I got to walk around the Friendly Confines for a bit, which, even as a Sox fan, I have to admit was really cool. But as charming as my bucket list is, I thought I'd share some tidbits I picked up:

Things I learned:

1) you can't place outgoing calls on the Cubs bullpen phone in November

2) NU is going to have a special helmet for the game. On a photo blackout that I'll respect, but they're CLEAN. Might be my favorite NU helmet ever: white helmet with Northwestern in purple baseball script.

I trust you all not to leak that before the team drops the photos.

3) both teams will share a sideline, this has been previously reported but I can confirm it. The field is a tight squeeze to fit and with the right field wall you can't get the normal sideline for both squads. There's a purple block of No Man's Land between them, rumor is teams will be penalized for entering it.

4) Wrigley is cut super short. By far the shortest grass I've ever seen for a Northwestern game.

5) This is a bit of a spoiler for anyone who has a ticket, but they were test running the in-game promotions. They asked the team what covers the outfield wall and a bunch of guys couldn't place the word for ivy and answered vines or grapevines, drew some laughs. Also, Bryce Kirtz couldn't guess the year that Wrigley Field opened for his life.

Ferentz Comment About Wrigley Post Game

I don't know if anyone heard Coach Ferentz' interview post game but he was not happy with Wrigley field conditions - although both he and the players did like the experience - and suggested it would be a topic of conversation with the league. He was particularly concerned about the proximity/safety of the end zone wall. He also did not like both teams being located on the same side of the field plus, obviously, the condition of the turf. In particular, the safety concern will put the league in a precarious position. I can see one-direction football coming back.

MAC Tuesdays

Three games on TV tonight. No one in the stands. Playing for the TV fans and gamblers. Earlier in the season it was the Sun Belt Conference (Need to double check that.) rotating games. So I guess the play is to fill up the week with P5 content. That cannot be a healthy recipe for building fan interest at those schools. NU Saturday games, even though poorly attended, look like heaven on earth in comparison. Picking up players from those schools through the portal should be easier and easier going forward.

FB RECRUITING DEI is the answer to all of our wishes. Seriously!!!!!!

The nationwide movement, DEI, widely used by NU and many other institutions is defined as: diversity, equity, and inclusion are three closely linked values held by many organizations that are working to be supportive of different groups of individuals, including people of different races, ethnicities, religions, genders, and sexual orientations.
This also is intended to apply to those not academically gifted but worthy of recognition and acceptance because of their character, leadership, and success. The Ivy League, Duke, BC, Vandy, GT, the Military Academies (all 3 major ones) and many others are using DEI to admit good kids who may not be in the top 5% of their class nor above 28 on the ACT.
Our opponents in the B1G as well use this to their distinct advantage to pummel us on recruiting high school kids as well as graduate transfers.
We need everyone with any slight bit of influence at NU to inform all in power (Schill, BOT, Profs, Donors, etc.) that NU is severely violating its' own DEI stated policies in a very serious way. Those making the Admission decisions have mightly failed the University and the very sacred policy that they so prominently promote as law.
I have already contacted Dr. Schill over this issue and I wish each of you would undertake as your personal mission that you demand from yourself and NU friends that this heinous violation of DEI be immediately stopped. Female and male athletes can be highly successful at NU and in life and business because of their dedication, time management, competitiveness, grit, and toughness.
ENFORCE DEI AT NU AND LEVEL THE PLAYING FOR A GREAT UNIVERSITY.
