What we learned today

1. Sullivan can’t play at the BigTen level, and shouldn’t play again except in emergency duty.

2. Pate is the cats best playmaker on defense.

3. As we’ve know for two years Gallagher can’t play.

4. Staff needs to play everybody on the roster to find out who can play and who can’t. There are undoubtedly backups who are better than current starters.

5. Tyus is a useful, powerful runner and should be utilized more in the offense. (Not in kick return).

6. The OC needs to go.

7. CB’s can’t play 8 yards off the ball in 3rd and 3. Just stupid. Play man press coverage for god sake, you’re not playing against Aaron Rodgers.

8. If you’ve read the Fitz v NU lawsuit you know he is going to be a very rich man at NU’s expense.

9. It’s a miracle that this team is 3-3!

Watching UMN vs. UM tonight

Kind of tells us where NU is at this point. Possibly better than some in the West, but no where near the best in the East. Minnesota actually played Michigan tough, they just couldn't compete. Say what you will about Harbaugh, he's put together one heck of a football team. NU can be competitive against Nebraska, Purdue and Illinois. Really hope they win those three, and maybe another. The odds of winning three or four more are slim, however. They need to play better than today.

Reggie was a prized local recruit but injuries have slowed his development. I think he’s healthy now, but he’s behind a veteran group of starters.

Reggie has a big body (6’2” 205). After watching his HS tape, I thought NU should consider using him out of the backfield at times.

Mizzou has started running plays for Luther Burden out of the backfield. Burden is thick—5’11” 208–and a handful for DBs once he gets the ball.

Would love to see Reggie get the ball some this year.

National Coordinator of Officials explains why Penn State fake kneel should have been ruled dead

The outcome of the game was already well in hand, but the touchdown that Penn State scored with just more than two minutes to go against Northwestern in a win on Saturday apparently should not have counted. All because of a fake knee from backup quarterback Beau Pribula.

National coordinator of officials Steve Shaw explained the missed call during a rules breakdown posted by the SEC Officiating account on X. Basically, the play where Pribula deked the defense by appearing to take a knee should’ve been blown dead as he did so.

“The quarterback is back in shotgun formation. He’s going to take the snap. He fakes forward. The right knee is dangerously close to the ground. But then he’s going to step back and he throws a pass downfield for, which is caught for an apparent touchdown. Now, there are many ways that a live ball can be declared dead. But, by rule, when a ball carrier simulates placing their knee on the ground, the ball becomes dead,” Shaw said.

The rule, he added, was partially with the intent of prevent a quarterback from being hit in a vulnerable position.

And the formation — Penn State was in the shotgun — doesn’t matter.

“And this was really put in place to keep a quarterback from faking a knee down, usually from under center, and then stepping back and throwing a pass downfield. But, it can be from any formation or any position. So, if the ball carrier simulates a knee down, which is what we had here, the officials should kill the play and declare the ball dead at that point,” Shaw said.
