Hey hey! The Onion Praises the Cats

Or, whatever.

“At press time, visibly distressed fans of conference rival Purdue University told reporters that they feared their team wasn’t engaging in the kind of hardcore hazing necessary to compete with a serious team like those sick f*cks at Northwestern.”

Football Shouldn't Be Allowed to Mess Up Everybody Else

Here is an article about how this latest craziness is affecting a womens softball player from Oregon. Bascially she will only be able to go to class one or two days a week due to the coast to coast travel reqirement.

And here is an excerpt if you don't want to read the whole thing:

“If we tried to leave on Thursday, there’s no way for us to leave at a decent hour, especially with the time change, to fully be ready for our game on Friday,” Sinicki says. “That’d mean for sure leaving on Wednesday morning most likely so that we really only go to school Monday/Tuesday which for me personally is hard. I’m a Human physiology major and a lot of our classes are offered Tuesday-Thursday like bio and chemistry. Even my higher-and upper-division classes. Realistically going to school one or two days a week for travel days like that for the Big Ten.”

These conference changes are grossly unfair to many non-football athletes, but the people in charge really don't care about them.

This is really about nothing else but money, money, and more money.

Too bad for you non-football players. You don't count anymore. You are really pretty much dispensable in the world of football and big money.

Are we being too hard on Gragg?

Regarding the FB scandal? Not that I am any big fan of his but it sure seems that this mess has been all Schill. Gragg has not really done anything right or wrong, He seems mostly cut out of the loop and being used as a scapegoat in this, Again he has done some things wrong in the hiring of Foster and IMO how he handled CCC but he has had almost nothing to do with this episode other than a couple poor meetings with the players which may be the way he was directed to doing things, Sure seems that the mis-handling of this has been all Schill. We really have not seen anything out of Gragg. Hard to say if he is a big part of the problem or could be part of the solution, I am just asking because I really have not seen anything at all out of him one way or the other other than those two player meetings

I found Jim O'Neil ...

Like Fitz, he is coaching high school football. He and Fitz are only 5.5 miles apart on Lake Avenue. Fitz is at Loyola and O'Neil is at Glenbrook South. Gunner Vogel also has joined the GBS staff. Its is rebuilding year for GBS who went 10-1 last year (after Maine South forfeited all its games). GBS plays tonight - I might have to walk across the street to take look. I almost fell out of my chair when I saw this:

"GBS added some new staff members this year to help the team perform at its best. Gunnar Vogel joined the staff as an assistant after playing pro football with the Philadelphia Stars (USFL in 2022) and D.C. Defenders (XFL in 2023) after tryouts with the Chicago Bears and Cincinnati Bengals in 2021. Vogel is a graduate of Northwestern. Schoenwetter was also excited to add Jim O’Neil to the staff as an assistant. O’Neil worked on the coaching staff at Albany (2001), Pennsylvania (2002), Northwestern (2003-04; 2021-22), Towson (2005) and Eastern Michigan (2006-08) in college, along with stops in the NFL with the New York Jets (2009-12), Buffalo Bills (2013), Cleveland Browns (2014-15; defensive coordinator), San Francisco 49ers (2016; defensive coordinator) and Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders (2018-20). Most recently, O’Neil was the defensive coordinator at Northwestern the last two seasons. During his stint in the NFL with the Jets, O’Neil helped coach 2023 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Darrelle Revis."

Non-political hazing thread

It looks like the hazing thread was deleted, which is a shame, because there were some good posts there. Let's have a non-political thread on the same topic.

There are some questions and comments I'll offer for discussion (feel free to add your own):

Is hazing always bad?
If not, what are the boundaries that separate "bad" hazing from the rest? Is it the simulated sex acts?
If some people are singled out for these rituals and others are not, I don't call that hazing; I call that bullying.
Perhaps all hazing IS bad, even if it may seem benign, due to the slippery slope argument. Perhaps, once the seed is planted, it is always destined to progress until it eventually does cross the line. That seems to be the explanation favored by that article in The Athletic.
What were the repercussions for any NU football players who opted out of the rituals? Has anybody claimed that the coaches cut their playing time because they opted out of the rituals?

Ryan Field

Per Politico IL Playbook today (here: https://www.politico.com/newsletter.../25/vp-gets-the-gold-coast-treatment-00107962)

“The Ryan family is willing to stand-by their stadium gift and are letting the decision on whether to go forward or to pause up to the Northwestern president and board of trustees,” according to a person connected to the university.

Debuting at #4 on ESPN’s Bottom 10

if we don’t win a few to get off this list, it will be a long season of jokes about old Northworstern.

4. North by Northworstern

When the Wildcats finished last season 1-11 and wound up No. 4 in the final 2022 Bottom 10, no one thought the situation in Evanston could get any worse. Then the vaunted Northwestern student newspaper said, "Hold my Helles Lager from Double Clutch Brewing Company."

I worked for Northwestern Football for four seasons. Ask me anything.

Long-time reader of the forum. Lots of folks have asked and DMed questions privately, but I'm off work today so I decided to make myself a little more available for folks. I'll pop in throughout the day to answer.

The best way to learn about my experience is by listening to my podcast (shameless plug) but if you've already listened and you think anything was unclear or unaddressed, ask away and I'll do my best to answer candidly.

FOOTBALL Press conference notes

Here are my quick notes from today's press conference, a full takeaways piece will be up on the site later this afternoon.

No quarterback announcement, but hints an internal decision has been made
"We've had talks internally and we're really excited about the competition that we're in and the depth in that room," Braun said. "But some of those decisions that we've made, we're choosing to keep in-house at this time."

Braun's quote made it seem that there's a starter but they don't want to show their hand to Rutgers. There will be another mock game/scrimmage at Ryan Field this Saturday and if the quarterback battle is still truly up in the air, that should bring clarity.

Wants a single starter once they pick
Braun has no intention at this time to split series or snaps for Rutgers.

"This team does need a starting quarterback, just one individual that's our starter," Braun said. "You know if there's other ways to utilize other skill sets within that room then let's tap into that. But we need someone that that's our starting quarterback and get our entire locker rooms behind that individual before we embark on our season."

Team is purposefully practicing outside to prep for the heat

My eyebrows raised as I walked into Walter Athletics Center and saw the team out on Hutcheson Field. Braun said that this was purposeful prep, with approval from team trainers and doctors, for what they project to be adverse conditions at Rutgers Week 1 and at Duke Week 3.

"The indoor facility that we have here is incredible and we'll continue to utilize it in scenarios where the weather is not going to allow us to get done what we need to get done or if we anticipate good weather for our game. If there's poor weather outside, let's practice in a controlled environment. But we can anticipate heat for Rutgers and we can anticipate heat for Duke that we haven't experienced very much as we've gone through camp...we have to prepare to win games on Saturday in the fall in the Big Ten. Any opportunity we have to be in the elements, if we're expecting to play in those elements at some point, we're taking full advantage of.

Helmet decals came from the equipment staff

"To be honest with you, I'm not sure," Braun said on whose idea the position group decals were. "All I know is that our equipment staff are having fun with the guys and our guys were fired up to have an opportunity to wear those in the fall. There's been some competitive banter and the logos on the helmet have played into that, which is exactly what you want in fall camp."

Players said why they chose to stay at Northwestern

The Inside Zone's Matt Fortuna asked the players why they chose to stay at NU rather than transfer out, each player gave a response:

DE Sean McLaughlin: "The guys in the locker room, without a doubt. Those guys have been there from the minute I stepped on campus my freshman year. I don't know what I would do without some of those guys who I formed relationships with. Some of the older D linemen like Joe Spivak or Trevor Kent, they taught me some serious things that you can't [get] any other place...I've formed bonds that will last forever. That's the biggest reason I stayed."

Johnson is referring to a coach being fired in his following quote.

WR Camron Johnson: "For me, having gone through something like this before, the guys in the room and the whole support staff, everybody had conviction that we're going to get through this together. We're going to make this a successful season regardless. That was something that I hadn't seen in other schools whenever you go through coaching changes, people splinter off, stuff like that...for any team I've been on in my six years, this team is as close as any I've been a part of. It was a no-brainer to stay and be with these guys and enjoy my last year."

RB Cam Porter: "Cam kind of hit the nail on the head. It was a no-brainer. We came together and made a decision that we're going to try and make this a special season."

Hey Alaska, now your other alma mater- USD’s football program is under investigation for hazing

University of San Diego’s football program paused while hazing investigation takes place. (USD is where Jim Harbaugh got his start as head coach. Alaska got his law degree there.)

Evolution of the program

Said it before, but gonna say it again. I’m sorry the University treated Fitz the way they did - he didn’t deserve it.

But, the silver lining is that we have a chance to evolve and make the necessary transformation.

The rest of the conference is modernizing. Nobody could believe that Fitz had it in him to make the necessary pivot. Under Fitz we were doomed to fall behind forever. Will see if Bajakian unleashed is an answer this fall, and Braun’s future as head coach here is probably tied to this fairly or not. If we do move on, then we better be bringing in an offense that can win games (and returning to a D that can do so as well).
