One thing is better than I thought

Just looked up the point spread vs Rutgers and it is sitting at +7. That translates to about a 30% win probability. Not great (especially against Rutgers) but at least better than what I was expecting.

Despite the many messes described on other threads, I am still pulling hard for the team. Having some momentum with a new coach will make a significant difference to all of the storylines for the program. Focus in and get the win. The importance of a narrative change is critical for current players and recruiting.

FOOTBALL Hankwitz quoted in New York Times hazing article

I came across this story in the New York Times about the NU hazing scandal. Mike Hankwitz and Rose Bowl DE Casey Dailey are both quoted. There’s not really any other new material here, but it’s definitely worth a read.

I believe that Hank is the first NU coach, current or former, to go on the record. Not surprisingly, he backs Fitz:

Mike Hankwitz, who spent 13 years as the football team’s defensive coordinator before his retirement after the 2020 season, did not doubt the accounts of some athletes. But in a phone interview, he questioned the scope of the accusations because he said he had neither witnessed nor heard of hazing from coaches, equipment managers, janitors, strength and conditioning coaches, trainers and food servers — all people who would be around Northwestern football players.

“Fitz wanted to do what was right by the players,” Hankwitz said. “Our first team meeting is team rules, one of which is zero tolerance for hazing. To say he sat by as this happened? I’m sorry.”

Hankwitz said Northwestern has long had a players’ council, which was elected by the players and could have brought any concerns to Fitzgerald. “He wanted to give them ownership and leadership skills,” Hankwitz said.

New announcement from Shill

Dear Northwestern community,
Last week, we made two commitments to you: that we will stop at nothing to safeguard the welfare of our student-athletes; and that we will do whatever is necessary to ensure that our athletics program is fully aligned with and reflects our values.
Today, we announce that we have engaged former United States Attorney General Loretta Lynch to lead the independent review of the accountability mechanisms and culture in place in our athletics program. For more information, access the complete announcement on our Northwestern Now website.
Great. Because the last "independent review" worked out so well. /s

OT: Walloon Lake

Here’s a positive note about NU.

I’m up here in northern Michigan. I was out on Walloon Lake with my family. It is a beautiful place, and where Hemingway spent his summers as a kid.

It is customary for the docks to fly the flag of each owner’s college affiliation. Obviously there are many, many UofM & MSU flags, and a smattering of OSU, Indiana and other Big Ten flags. I didn’t expect to see one NU flag, but surprisingly driving around the lake we saw three.

One of the owners was having a campfire on the lake with his family proudly wearing a NU sweatshirt. We drove by and had a lively “Go Cats” exchange. Very nice to see that the recent scandal has not dampened all of the purple pride in northern Michigan.

Game that changed Football. 20th anniversary article on the 20000 game against Michigan 54-51 final. 20th anniversary article in Athletic

This was my first or second date with Therese. She went to a lot more games after that over the 20 years in between. In 2020 we were dealing with COVID and her health issues so by then (20th anniversary) she had been to her last game

Another serious question for the lawyers

I'm not an attorney.
Some of you are...

Here's my question...

Let hypothesize that Fitzgerald told the administration or the athletic director that he was leaving some of the disciplinary "punishment" in the hands of a council of players.
The administration says "okay sounds like a good idea..." or maybe they say "hmm, if you think that helps"

Does that make any difference - implicit (or explicit) approval of Fitzgerald's approach.

Or, put differently, if Morty knew that was how Fitzgerald wanted to run the program, but didn't know what was happening, doesn't that constitute a willingness to accept the possible outcomes?

Asking for a friend.
