Anyone know the last time we had that many sacks in a game?

...the growth that units and individual players have shown over the course of the season. Fitz's best teams were always those that seemed to get stronger as the year went on.

Seems that the players are getting meaningful coaching week to week. Kudos to Braun and staff.

Was that 3rd and goal pass really incomplete with 5 mins left?

Was that really an interception to seal the game?

I couldn't tell for either, watching from the stands, or with the replays they showed on the big screen.

Northwestern kicking is off to a perfect start, 4-for-4 on field goals and 13-for-13 on extra points. I interviewed long snapper Will Halkyard and kicker Jack Olsen on their long-standing friendship, the card game that brings the specialists together this season, and how they plan to continue their success in the second half of the season.

Here are @mshelton33's takeaways from a fun day at Ryan Field.

I went down on the field before the game to get a look around. I saw Timi Oke down there, filming EVERYTHING with his camera on the sideline. I also saw 2025 QB Alessio Milivojevic and 2024 TE commit Patrick Schaller. One new face: 2025 OL Xzavier Grabher (not a great last name) from Racine (Wis.) St. Catherine's. Here's his film:

It's looking like a light crowd today, even by NU standards. The parking lots were a lot less empty than usual, and Maryland didn't bring a lot of fans. I can count the fans in the East stands right now, 15 minutes before the game.

People I sat with at the game thought (for most of the game) that he looked horrible, taking too many sacks, missing open receivers, etc.

I thought he threw well. He threw 13/18 (not a bad percentage) for two touchdowns, and the one in the 2nd half was a beautiful, deep shot. The problem, I thought, was that he needed to throw more.

It was a very run-heavy, vanilla game plan. And many of those runs were from Sullivan, without much to show for it. He did have a nice, 35-yard scamper for a TD. Then he had another 14 runs for a total net of 3 yards. There were 4 sacks, but that will happen when the QB runs that much. Some of that is blocking, but some of that is Howard's adjustments. But with Howard keying on Sully, it allowed our RBs to put up some good numbers.

He's still an athletic runner who makes things happen, and I thought he did have some success when he decided to throw it. Once Howard adjusted after he ran for that TD, I wish he would've thrown it some more.

We can tweak the game plan against Nebraska (assuming it's Sully again). I think he has the tools to keep us in the game.

Basketball season starts November 1st.

Northwestern (3-4, 1-3 Big Ten) hosts Maryland (5-2, 2-2 Big Ten) today at Ryan Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:01 am, the game will air on BTN.

The Wildcats lead the all-time series 2-1 and are 1-0 against the Terps in Evanston.

The only guy that holds the ball longer than Brendan Sullivan is Justin Fields.

All while waving my NU flag and taunting my IU and PU neighbors. Do I deserve an unsportsmanlike penalty? It was not a very fast lap.

Did not expect that. And did not expect that finish.

33 points. And arguably could have scored more if we could learn how to play goal line offense.

5 sacks? I mean on defense? Hubbard with 3?

Was I the only one who thought we were in trouble when we reverted to Fitz ball after MD’s score when they just carved us up like that? But then Coco comes away with the INT!

Braun has won 4 games already and I don’t think he’s done. As many games as Fitz won in the last two years and this after losing 4 players to the league. We might actually make a bowl. If we do bring in a new coach I for damn sure hope we retain him as DC. The kids play hard. Way better coached than last year. The defense is night and day different, way better.

Fitz got jobbed but this may end up being a needed turning point and disruption for NU football.

ML Baseball sign stealing has been a science for over 100 years and so has sign stealing I football. In 2017 a Duke player told me they knew everything we did on offense, runs and passes. He explained they knew the pass routes and it made it easy for them to cover our concepts. They thrashed us. I passed it on to staff and they poo pooed it. PSU visited later in the year and absolutely killed us. After the game another former player of mine said the got our signals from Duke and knew everything we did. I went higher to report it to staff. Check out record after the PSU game!
