OT: RIP Gordon Lightfoot

Canadian folk singer and national icon Gordon Lightfoot has exited the earthly realm.

He is probably best known for his "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", a haunting tale of an iron ore freighter that sank in a violent fall storm on Lake Superior. The song refers to the Lake Superior fall storm season as the "Witch of November", something I experienced firsthand (in early October) one year on a backpacking trip along the coast of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. I will never forget the sound of the wind and ice squalls that battered my tent one night as we camped behind some low dunes just off the shore.

Money and College Athletics

In an attempt to gain a better understanding and shed some light on how things work in college athletics, I'm starting this thread.

Here are some facts or things I believe to be facts...

The NCAA is primarily an organization that runs a college basketball tournament in March.
According to its most recent data, the NCAA generated almost $1.3 billion in revenue in the 2022-23 fiscal year.
The basketball tournament accounts for $900 million in revenue. $669 million of that was distributed to the 363 Division 1 programs.
$192 million was spent to host other championship events. Over $100 million was spent on D2 and D3 championship events, including distributions to some schools.

The NCAA has no significant direct involvement or control over college football media deals.

Most, if not all, public universities account for athletics in a standalone athletic department. Many private universities do not disclose their financials.
Sportico provides useful information on all public D1 university Athletic Departments here...

The vast majority of athletic departments lose money. The vast majority are subsidized by the university, including fees charged to students.

Ohio State is the top revenue-generating athletic department in the country.
Here are their financials for 2023... Numbers are in $millions. They reported income of $5 million.

This article is interesting... It is about the state of Pac 12 athletics prior to the league's disintegration.

+/- for the Derailment at Dayton

Here is the breakdown of the Wildcats first loss of the season Saturday night. I tossed the last 20 seconds, so the "final'" was 68-61.

PlayerMinutesNU PtsDayton PtsRaw+/-Player AdjustNet +/-
Martinelli395868-10+11.24+9.24
Ciaravino204140+1+4.76+4.96
Mullins233728+9-0.71+1.09
Smith698+1-0.83-0.63
Hunger192429-5-1.38-2.38
Nicholson203437-3-2.46-3.06
Leach233046-16-0.28-3.48
Windham284843+5-4.83-3.83
Berry202441-17-5.53-8.93

Other than the obvious "star of the game" going to Nick Martinelli, the only other guys who made a respectable showing are Angelo Ciaravino and Justin Mullins.
Mullins, notably was +9 in his 23 minutes. He missed all 3 of his shots, but had 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and no turnovers. Classic "glue guy" numbers.
Of course, this means NU lost by 16 in the 17 minutes that Mullins wasn't playing. Dayton only scored 28 points in Mullins 23 minutes.
Angelo Ciaravino was impressive in his first real D1 battle. He finished with a raw +1. His fellow freshman KJ Windham finished with a raw +5. But Ciaravino was 5 of 7 from the floor, with Windham going 4 of 11..

Ty Berry did not play well. Nor did Jalen Leach. The team struggled when they were on the court. I suspect it had more to do with Dayton's personnel than Berry and Leach. Leach, in particular, could not match the Dayton quickness. Windham, the true freshman, showed glimpses of being a star... quicker than anybody else for NU, he had to try to get the offense going... its a lot to ask at this point, but by Dec 1, Windham may have Leach's spot in the starting lineup - or be playing more minutes. Windham played the last 9 minutes. NU led 51-41 with about 10 minutes to go and got outscored 25-8 into the closing minute.

Ciaravino, a 6'6" wing, was a bad matchup for Dayton who played 3 guards most of the game. One of those little Dayton guys had to guard the NU freshman and he bullied them. That alone is very promising.

One noteworthy tidbit was that when Mullins and Windham were on the court together, NU outscored Dayton 29-13 in about 15.5 minutes. In fact, Mullins, Ciaravino and Windham were all on the court together for a 12-0 run midway thru the first half. When both Berry and Leach were sitting on the bench, NU outscored Dayton 26-6 over 10.5 minutes. When Berry or Leach was on the court we got beaten down 65-40. I don't want to start making proclamations, since I do think Dayton was a problem for our backcourt, but thats rather remarkable.

Like Matt Nicholson, I'm feeling some rust with this, so if I messed up, please let me know.

FB RECRUITING Recruit Roundup: O'Brien throws for 342 yards, four TD in playoff debut

Nine different Northwestern commits won playoff games last week, including 2026 quarterback Johnny O'Brien in his debut. Read about his big game and more in this week's recruit roundup.

The next NIL domino?

Saw this on a different forum. A player suing the NCAA for eligibility restrictions. Wants 2 more years. If he wins there will be no more eligibility rules. 30 or 35 year olds in College football?

Not discouraged

Once Barnhizer comes back this team will be fine. The preseason will be a growing experience for the freshmen who can clearly play at this level. Ty and Matt just need minutes to get going and Martinelli and Barnhizer will be a two headed monster. I can see us going 9 deep with Windham, Ciaravino, Hunger and Mullins being the 4 off the bench. I think we will be a tourney team as long as we remain healthy

FB RECRUITING Recruit Roundup: Trey Boyd and Shakopee (Minn.) advance to state semis

Offensive lineman Trey Boyd is headed to Minneapolis for the MSHSL state semifinals this week, quarterback Johnny O'Brien threw for a school record 464 yards, and two defensive ends continue to represent the top seeds in Illinois and Ohio. Read about all of that and more in this week's recruit roundup.

Scouting Report: Northwestern 2026 QB commit Johnny O'Brien

Our @mshelton33 was on the sideline last night as Johnny O'Brien threw for a school-record 464 yards and 4 TDs in Palatine (Ill.) Fremd's 31-28 playoff loss to Naperville Central.

Great stuff here from Matt.

BASKETBALL Dayton Postgame Interview Transcripts

Northwestern basketball held informal postgame interviews after the 71-66 loss at Dayton and head coach Chris Collins, guard Angelo Ciaravino and forward Nick Martinelli took time to answer my questions.

Below are the transcripts of my recorded audio, condensed for clarity and conciseness.

This is premium content. Please subscribe to view.

For tOSU fans attending the game…

-The game will be 12 Noon on Saturday, November 16 at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field at the University of Chicago.
-Parking may be ‘tight’, but you can park in any bike lane on a Saturday without fear of a ticket or tow.
-Be sure to wear a money belt for protection against those fast talking Chicago con men.
-Tell fellow Buckeye fans that Northwestern is not a pushover; no one has ever said this in the history of college football, and everyone will be amazed.
-For a pleasurable dining experience, Chik-fil-a is open on Saturday in Chicago.
Thank you and drive home safely.
