Collins to Villanova rumors

This is my instinct too, creating a distraction for the team during the tournament, but on the other hand the guys all know it's going on and everybody in every program knows that as soon as the season is over we all negotiate over who leaves, who stays, who might transfer, who will get what NIL bag, etc. The players are thinking the same thing and know it's going on, so it's not like it's not something everybody is thinking about anyway. At least now you acknowledge the reports and can tell your guys "yeah, we're all still figuring out next year still, let's all worry about that on Monday."
Or "let's worry about it in April after we win it all"

Ok. What’s the alternative?
I think I'd just wait until the smoke clears.
Explain to the head coach that you will negotiate after that and how you will address any concerns.
If that requires a hard reset, at least you know what the rules are.
If Collins decides to leave right away then you know you made the right decision (because he was leaving no matter what).

Just a leverage ploy, then.
Great leverage for Collins because the AD wants to get his name in the paper.

Personally, I'm not a fan of longterm deals. Obviously there are hordes on this website who would make him the highest paid coach for eternity. I sense a big mistake coming.

Not really about Collins the individual, I just think it is damned near impossible for Northwestern to make an informed decision, with the landscape changing dramatically - and unpredictably. Committing to anything longterm in those circumstances is very risky.
Taking him out to 5 years is pretty reasonable but it likely needs a provision to get it back to 5 years after a successful (Dance?) season so that he can feel secure and not have to revisit this each time. If we had had that in place current contract he would currently been at 4 years and the need for redoing it would not be so immediate

Could take him out longer to 6 or 7 years but when it gets out that far it can get dicey

You need the contract to run through the duration of the current recruiting class. So 4-5 years. It’s even more important for a school like NU where most will acknowledge the HC is the reason most choose the school. We ding have a history of success and players have to trust the head man. If things don’t work out and you pay a buy out, so be it. Just be careful it isn’t ridiculously cost prohibitive. We got very lucky there was a significant buy out on CCC’s last contact or dopey Gragg would have bounced him out. Buy outs aren’t always a bad thing.

If you were Collins and putting yourself in the best position for yourself or your family, what would you do?

Until the smoke clears? The portal is open now, man!

The best case scenario for an NU fan, an NU player with eligibility in demand, and Collins himself is to do what he did. Nail down some certainty for the program and get ready for next year.

If he fails to deliver in 3-4 years he can always be canned. Northwestern has a ton of resources to buy him out if needed.
