Oregonians are Illiterate

To be honest... "gage" and "gauge" throw me a lot. It made me feel better that I looked them up before typing this post and the definition (link) says that "gage" can be used as a spelling variant of "gauge" although technically they are different words.
What is confusing me a little with your post is that I do not know the context. If the reference is to a shotgun, then I think that "12 gauge" is correct.
Now the joke is on me, though I will blame auto correct.
At halftime Jimmy Kimmel did a skit involving 3 fans that each had signs. One read something to the effect that the Oregon fans had their "12 guage" shotgun ready. Kimmel could not resist pointing out the error.
[begin sarcasm] it's nice to have people like this to make me feel intellectually superior. Hayseeds do serve an important role in society.
