Sounds like a pretty good tourney start this weekend in Tempe at the Kajikawa Classic.

Lost by a run to USC, won another 1-runner, and blew out two other opponents in 5-inning mercy stoppages (10+ run wins).

They lost to Stanford, not USC. FYI - USC does not have a softball team.

i know that coralspringsass says im a spammer or whatever, so maybe it will surprise you that im not. anyway, NU softball should be pretty good this year. emily allard is back for a 5th year due to the med hardship. interestingly, she is playing center after 3 years playing every game at ss. we lost our starting cf, scharkey, to graduation so it fills a need and while allard was hurt anna edwards earned her spot at ss.

then we have some new power in the batting order because andrea filler, a transfer from bc, is eligible now after sitting last year. filler has a whopping 3 years of eligibility left because she got hurt as a soph at BC and got a med hardship. pretty nice deal for her, transferring closer to home (from indiana) and probably eventually getting a bachelor's and probably a master's here.

as for pitching here's where hard work by our players and coaching/player development may pay off. we have a soph kristen wood who gave up a run per inning (Yeah, a RUN per IP) last yr as a frosh but she is a K machine too. she will be better. then we have a lot of depth. maybe no dominating canney type, but four or even five players who can start or relieve, including a frosh who has already seen action in the circle.

all in all, a lot of veteran leadership in 5th year allard and 4 other seniors including slugger marisa bast. maybe no sluggers like cooper, williams, monka, we've grown accustomed to (spoiled by?) and no canney or courtenay foster, but this is a solid team reminiscent of last year's bunch but with better pitching as the youngsters mature and allard back as a bonus.

From what I have seen over the years, team only goes as far as the pitching takes them. All the rest is interesting but just seems to be pretty much fluff.
