Vitale and Lowry are rated 1 and 2...

The tyranny of low expectations! At any rate, congrats to Dean and Dan and their trainers!

This was not about lowered expectations because of the program they came from. This was a comparison of their speed and strength against the distributions of performances of all other combine members, including players from Alabama, OSU, and other traditionally strong programs.

Another reason why posting around here sucks...consedcending posts. Nothing like taking the air out of two great accomplishments.

Not only condescending but ignorant. The analysis is entirely independent of and has nothing to do with, program success or perception in any way.

maybe Holy cross has a secret football team.

Great news. Congrats to both of them. Hard work and dedication pay off. Credit to the trainers and strength coaches too.

Go Cats!
There were two NU players at the combine and they placed 1 and 2 against the norm? That is nothing less than a "wow" performance and can do nothing but add credibility to the NU coaching staff in the eyes of NFL scouts. There is no negative or down side to this.

Amazing effort by Dan and Dean and amazing team effort by them and their coaching support.

Combine results are more of a mixed bag.If you do substantially better than expected that teams ask why you didn't do better on the field so probably not much of an improvement. If you do worse, probably gets you knocked down

I disagree. If your combine results show that you have significant amounts of physical potential, then that would definitely improve your draft position. I regularly hear about guys that are drafted with the coaches planning on them playing special teams for a years or two until they are coached to their potential. In terms of play on the field, Lowry had some dominating games against solid competition. Vitale was a strong performer in a one-dimensional offense - which is a tough position.

I don't think I am being overly Pollyanna to be saying that this is nothing but positive for these players.

This isn't just me saying this. Hub Arkish (sp? big name in Chicago putting out pro football publications) made the statement. Basically he said that based on tape, the teams already had their opinion. If a guy came up substantially better than that at the combine, it made teams wonder why the kid had not done better on the field so while it might make an improvement on where they would take the kid, it wouldn't make a huge difference. But if they were a top guy and performed poorly, it had a chance to hurt. Sort of explains why so many of the top guys choose not to go. It can generally only hurt them

Just in case the earlier explanation didn't stick... These performances are adjusted for height and weight only (read more closely) not anything individual or school related. Look at the top 10....
name, school height, weight, and then "z scores" for various speed/strength tests relative to the adjusted mean. The last number is the total standard deviations by which the person exceeds the average in the tests. Look at #4 and 6, particularly. This has to be a BIG selling point for our physical development program. Come here and you can be the best developed athlete in the nation, even as a ** or *** recruit. NOT bad at ALL!!

This quote, "This has to be a BIG selling point for our physical development program. Come here and you can be the best developed athlete in the nation, even as a ** or *** recruit."
coupled with our consistent ability to identify guys early, needs a ton of publicity.
