Lia Thomas is a National Champion

Sorry to burst your bubble but it won’t.

Humanity is changing - most who believe in science would say we’re evolving!

While certain people want to demonize Lia, in 50 years she will be viewed as a civil rights hero. Mark my words.

The fundamental nature of humanity hasn't changed in thousands of years. Just different iterations of the same fundamentals.

I haven't seen anybody demonize Lia. Big difference between demonizing someone and debating their choices. The primary focus has been on decisions made by the swimming authorities. Not Lia.

In 50 years the evolution of America you speak of - if left unchecked - will make civil rights a relic of the past.

The fundamental nature of humanity hasn’t changed? It’s been 80 years since the Soviet Union and Germany did to Poland, what Russia is doing to Ukraine today.

Do you get the sense that things haven’t changed? America is still evolving, and for the better. 160 years ago, blacks were still in chains. 100 years ago, women couldn’t vote. 80 years ago, we dropped the big bombs to end an atrocious World War and send a message about the Holocaust. 50 years ago, my dad and many others were drafted out of HS and scarred in Vietnam while a lot of you lost intramural matches in Evanston. 30 years ago the internet didn’t exist and neither did glo. 15 years ago the iPhone was introduced. 10 years ago, homoesexuals couldn’t marry. 5 years ago, Lia couldn’t be herself.

Give me some more evolution. America and the world sorely need it.

I’ll get back to you on the demonizing when I have more time. Unfortunately prior threads were deleted.

Taken to a logical conclusion, a woman’s college coach (in just about any sport, but not all - it might not be an advantage in gymnastics for example) needs to get a contract with a really good bonus if they win an NCAA National Championship. And then win it with all transvestites. If I am a college women's coach why would I not recruit all transvestites from here on out? Or even just two or three each year?

Lack of recruits? Since nearly 40 percent of young people claim to be LGBTQ in recent surveys, there should be some available in each sport, there must be hundreds if you just do the math. Again, that is LGBTQ, not transvestites alone and obviously not all gay people want to change their gender but still the number should work out to many five stars in each of the respective women's sports.

This also raises an interesting question. What side of Title IX does Lia fall on? Does she count as a male athlete with the school required to use an equal investment in another female athlete? Or does she count as a female athlete consuming Title IX benefits as a biological male?

Lol. Eurocat always has the best questions!

This part struck me:
“While the large number of Millennials who identify as LGBTQ is attention-grabbing, Barna says what he found "really interesting is that 40 percent of them fall into the category of what we call the 'don'ts;' they don't believe that God exists, they don't care if God exists.”

Of course God does not exist. NU fans have known this for decades. But the fact that we remain fans is certainly a minor miracle.

There aren’t that many ‘transvestites’ from which to recruit, dummy. And, as Thomas’ last place finish shows, simply having been born with male genitals does not guarantee success in women’s sports.

That survey is really silly, and the headline is misleading. The responses were:
“Thinking about your commitments, would you describe yourself as:”
Searching for purpose
Believe all religions have equal value
An American patriot
Often feel anxious, depressed or unsafe
Deeply committed to practicing your faith
Prefer socialism to capitalism
LGBTQ

That’s a really weird grouping, and weird phrasing, and I don’t even know that ‘thinking about your commitments’ means. (I imagine it’s about what gets the most likes on your social media.) You’d think the headline would be about anxiety or anger in the face of end stage capitalism.

Also, it’s well documented that the rise in LGBTQ identification is due , yes, to increases in homosexual identification but also, and primarily, due to increased recognition among women that making out with other women is super hot.

There seemed to be some divine intervention in some of the cardiac games (Ron Dayne fumble, A-Train fumble, etc.).

There were two Republican governors today who vetoed legislation in their states banning biological males from competing in women's sports.

No matter what you think about this issue, I highly recommend reading the governor of Utah‘s veto message linked below. It’s thoughtful, compassionate, and he’s clearly trying to find a compromise solution. It’s very much worth reading all the way to the end.

It’s an excellent letter that centers the trans athletes’ humanity.

Trans kids kill themselves a lot. They’re homeless and disowned a lot. Wouldn’t it be great for those kids to see examples of transgender athletes who are being celebrated? Maybe it’s not all so bad, you know?

Could they not be celebrated competing in open competitions against other biological males and females who seek it?

I would prefer the governing bodies of sports like the NCAA, USOC, and IOC settle this issue without statehouses resorting to legislation. In the US, the main arbiter of amateur athletic competition is the NCAA, so clarity from them would be a great start.

Well put: you beat me to it. The Indiana governor also vetoed it.

"Four kids and only one of them playing girls sports. That’s what all of this is about. Four kids who aren’t dominating or winning trophies or taking scholarships. Four kids who are just trying to find some friends and feel like they are a part of something. Four kids trying to get through each day," he wrote. "Rarely has so much fear and anger been directed at so few."

Cox also cited research on how a sense of belonging could reduce suicide rates among transgender youth, adding that while he struggled to understand "conflicting" science, he sought to employ kindness.

"I don't understand what they are going through or why they feel the way they do. But I want them to live. And all the research shows that even a little acceptance and connection can reduce suicidality significantly,"
Cox wrote.

“For that reason, as much as any other, I have taken this action in the hope that we can continue to work together and find a better way," he added. "If a veto override occurs, I hope we can work to find ways to show these four kids that we love them and they have a place in our state."

Actually, just the opposite. It serves as a rudder to prevent drifting in the lanes, thus faster times in the 500 meters
I’ve learned not to question doctors about such matters.

So I admit: I get why the parents of the athletes who lost to Lia are upset. But I empathize more with Lia and have seen a lot of internet hate aimed towards her. And I remind myself of how many hate crimes are aimed towards LGTBQ people (1 hate crime is too many at all times).

How do you feel as a parent of a former D1 athlete?

My opinion is that you cannot disenfranchise an entire gender to appease the psychological preference of such a small number of people.
Competition should be determined by genetics- XX and XY
The high suicide rate of this group is unfortunate but reflects that reidentifying their sex does not solve the underlying psychological issues that plague them
I am not sure many biologic females could play D1 lacrosse but a biologic male with D1 skills would have no problem playing women's lacrosse at the highest level

…that’s quite the leap you made there.

How is inclusiveness of trans people the equivalent to the “old way” of blatant, systemic racism?

Allowing trans people to be themselves does not make us like the racist forefathers of prior generations. Quite the opposite, really.
There was nothing that prevented Thomas from competing as a male. But allowing Thomas to compete as a female was wrong.

Let us know when you expect to see females that consider themselves to be male compete in male sports

Women who want to become trans men are free to transition and compete in men’s events if they undergo what Lia underwent to become a woman.

Fair is fair. It’s now truly a two way street.

Do you really think Lia underwent an elective procedure to endure harassment from millions of people just to win a gold?
No one has said Thomas could not compete. Just not in women's division. Maybe you make one all inclusive division (current mens division for simplicity) But if you want to compete as a woman, that should be reserved for biological women.

This whole situation is wrong on so many levels. The NCAA and the Ivy League are CHICKEN BLEEP in allowing Thomas or any transgender female athlete to compete against biological females.Let them have their own tournament against one another. To say that Thomas does not have a major advantage over biological females is ludicrous.A spot is literally being stolen from one of these women. It is not right nor fair for Thomas to be allowed to participate in this tournament.
And when it becomes two or three and the top biological woman is not even on the podium... How many transgender women saying that they are men are going to try to compete as men? You would likely never here of them because they would be unlikely to be successful. And they might have another problem considering that they would likley have to have testosterone injections and that would possibly make them ineligible to compete. And even testosterone suppression might be baned as using an illegal substance

Wow. I can’t believe that a real doctor thinks that to be the cause of the high suicide rate for the trans community. I expect as much from the cavemen on the boards, but I expected more from someone who is actually trained and certified to see and treat patients.

Is the high suicide rate for NFL players due to their weak mental disposition?

Also, I’m sure at some point we’ll see a trans man playing men’s lacrosse if the NCAA keeps things righteous like they have in this case. ✊

What are the ones that you have considered, Coral? Or are you still hiding in @IGNORE2 ‘s safe place, behind the ignore function?
You add nothing but insults. Personal insults. Insults to common sense and human decency. Insults to even a basic level of intelligence. And then you go with the condescending BS. The hypocritical BS. I can’t tell whether you’re just trolling or that you have taken your liberalism to a level of mental illness. In either case, you belong on ignore.

Lol! The snowflakes are falling where I live. I can see some are posting here too.

This thread brings me back to the crux of the issue for me… do we really think Lia Thomas went through all the crap thrown at her (as represented in this thread) just because she desperately wanted to be an NCAA champion? Or could it possibly be that it is a sincerely held personal situation played out in the public sphere while continuing to pursue a lifelong passion?

Let’s also remember that the coaches at Penn encouraged her to pursue this. Her teammates may be pissed, but there were a lot of people supporting her decision to compete.

I seriously doubt she went thru this just to get a championship. I believe she believes she is a woman, and more power to her in all facets of her life except in athletic competition against women with two X chromosomes.

Pretty simple. No gender divisions. All humans compete.

From there, let folks create their own groups: bio girls, trans, not really sure….

But eliminate MBB and WBB for BB. And for schollies, give equal number for xx and xy regardless of what they play.
