Whether it's right or wrong, the best players usually get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to fouls. They get those favorable whistles. Now, Collins sees Brooks as one of those guys. He believes Brooks is at that level, where he’s deserves that level of respect on the court.

Brooks' style of play, driving hard to the basket, finishing through contact, that’s the kind of game that should get him to the line more often. The dude’s got great balance and strength, great footwork, and he knows how to use that contact to his advantage. With the way he attacks the rim, especially with all the banging he takes inside, you’d expect him to be living at the free-throw line more than he has been. That is the longer and less subtle version of what Collins is saying. He should be shooting more free throws.

Me too HJ. I coached youth basketball for 25 years. One year my 5th grade "C" team had to play up against a lot of "B" teams. We had a hard time scoring, the 24 best players in the class were on the A and B teams. But we learned to play defense. I remember well the game where our plan was to disrupt as much as possible the opponent's point guard and best player. It was our only chance. So I put my 2 best defenders on him, rotating the two and telling them we had 10 fouls to give and if we didn't use them all we weren't being aggressive enough.

After one ticky tack foul call, my player looks over at me in frustration. He had never had the green light to play so aggressively that he was bound to draw some fouls. My exact words were "Don't worry. You're playing exactly as I want you to. Keep it up." How could I have anticipated that the official would immediately T me up for that comment. Apparently, he thought my before its time Zack Edy defensive strategy was an afront to him. What a MORON.

We lost a lot of games that year, but went on to win that game 16-15.

Until Northwestern learns how to be leaders at something other than sports media & materials science & other areas, I am proud to cheer on the Illini if they do things the right way.

My uncle, aunt, and many other friends studied in Champagne. It is a great school and their engineering program is better than NU’s, top to bottom. 🧮

I’d look for more suspect officiating in OSU-Texas. Since the final is on ESPN they may care more about getting Texas in and less so about the B1G channel backed PSU or NBC backed ND.

I believe lineups (specific 5 man groups) range from good to bad - all relative to the general abilities of the players on the roster.
In other words, your roster has a given amount of individual talent, strengths and weaknesses. The best coaches maximize the performance of the team by figuring out which lineups work best (in general) and deliberately relying on those groups. The top coaches can also make in-game adjustments to go against the numbers by using lineups that don't normally work too well, but will work today - because of what the opponent is doing or who is playing for them. There ae many variables that occur during a game that require a coach to respond in real time. For what its worth, I think Coach Collins has gotten much better at that.

I never said that. I think it was a mistake to give up on the starters (collectively) so quickly. I also think it would have been helpful to give Ciaravino and Windham court time with Nicholson, Martinelli and Barnhizer - subbing them in for Leach or Berry - because that is how they will help the most going forward. Nicholson did not play with Windham at all in the Purdue game. Ciaravino played with the starters (Berry out) for 1:45 and we won that segment 4-2. Thats all we got as far as tweaking the starting lineup.

If all the D1 coaches brought their staffs with them and took over the Cats with 3 months to prepare, they'd all do things differently. Some would do better, most would do worse.
