Portal update

Chris Ledlum - 6'6 guard - St. John's. 9.5/6.9 - Grad transfer

Previously played 3 years at Harvard. Averaged 18.8/8.5 before transferring to St. John's
How the heck did this guy get another year and Langborg didn't?

ETA: He is suing the NCAA for another year, maybe Langborg should sue too.

Will take some time getting used to some of these names

Illinois, Iowa, Maryland 2x. In some years that could be a tough draw. Last year though, neither Iowa nor Maryland was very good. Next year? Who knows.

I think if my interpretation of the B1G scheduling is correct we will continue to play 1 rival (Illinois) home and home each year as we have in recent years. The other 2 repeat games will likely rotate. Interestingly enough (and probably smart in terms of managing a bad travel situation) all of the West Coast teams get home and homes against each other.

Static repeat matchups I believe are:
Illinois-Northwestern
Indiana-Purdue
Wisconsin-Minnesota
Nebraska-Iowa
Michigan-MSU
OSU-Maryland
Penn St-Rutgers
UCLA/USC/Washington/Oregon

I am curious if they will batch our @USC and @UCLA games into one road trip to LA. Then the next year maybe they batch the @Wash and @Oregon games into one. Can't really do that for football but for basketball it seems doable. Makes the travel manageable for the Midwest teams. It's still going to be rough for Pacific teams, and to a lesser extent for the Eastern teams like Rutgers PSU Maryland.

I know context matters, but in his three years at IU, Woodson has exactly the same conference record as Collins does over the last three years at NW, which is undoubtedly the best stretch of basketball that a coach has had at Northwestern (at least in a modern era). And to be fair to Woodson, he’s trying to build up after the coach before him was fired, so there is inherently a disadvantage to that, vs where he could be in Year 5+ where he’s had time to get more established.

I don’t think Woodson was the best candidate available, but to act like he can’t win based on his short sample size so far is silly. I suspect that they’ll be a solid team this year and a tourney team, which would make his 3rd in 4 seasons. Not sure they can compete for a conference title, but at the same time I don’t think there are any clear favorites either.
IU expectations are slightly different than NU

I stand corrected. Maybe better to say, I don’t believe there was much reciprocal interest on the part of the Christie’s.
He committed when it looked like Collins was going to get fired. There were rumors his brother was going to transfer to NU if he didn’t go the NBA, so hopefully there is some connection.

He is pretty one dimensional at this point (granted, a really important dimension). I would be surprised if he is drafted. But he would a great replacement for Langborg and it would give him a chance to develop his ballhandling.

According to 247, we offered.

But the timing would be incredibly weird to make it work. We would probably have to wait through the 29th. Then he'd have to drop out of the draft. We'd have to have a pile of NIL cash waiting. All while most attractive players would be gone.

I'm surprised YOU'RE surprised at that. OSU annually has one of the top recruiting classes in all of college football. That's just the reality: NU will always have less talent than OSU.
The 2023 class was arguably our best recruiting class in the last two decades. The class was decimated after the scandal. If the top kid in our class isn’t equivalent to the 22nd in the class to OSU then we are basically saying all 85 OSU players are considered more talented than anyone at NU. I have a little more faith in our talent than that. No one would ever argue NU has anywhere near the talent of OSU but our top half dozen players should be able to earn an OSU scholarship.

We didn’t even recruit the kid out of HS. So that tells you something about the family connection,

IF Cam were to pull out of the draft (big IF), he’s the type of player that would be able to fill the hole at lead guard.

Doubt it would happen given the Christies don’t seem particularly interested in NU, even with the family connections, but it would still be worth reaching out if that scenario comes to pass.

If you don’t make three deep you lose scholarship?
I am not sure any program actually says this, but the reality of the situation now is players are being strongly encouraged to look at other opponents when they don’t work out.

The pendulum has swung so much in favor of the players with NIL, immediate transfers, etc, that strangely, this doesn’t even bother me. As long as programs are honest with recruits when they come in, let the buyer beware. It doesn’t take much to see what programs/coaches historically do. With the rewards come the spoils.

Cam Christie is in the portal and I will officially coin MN as 💩

Do not contact tag.

Only if he wins. And he’s not proven he can do that.

Shades of Jimbo Fisher and TxAM football. The best middle of the league finish that money can buy.

Gronowski staying at South Dakota State

I wasn't holding my breath on Gronowski, but I was definitely hoping Braun/Lujan had a bullet in the chamber and that being the clear reason Sullivan hit the Portal. Instead it looks like it's the worst case scenario at the moment: we didn't have a clear starter and our presumed/likely starter didn't love what he was seeing in his chances, so now we're down a so-so QB/"likely" starter and next up is the guy who may or may not be much better.

I'm not mad at anyone, just the circumstances.

In other news...it's May 1 and Northwestern still hasn't invited me to pay for season tickets...
Haven’t you heard? Games are free this year.

Brendan Sullivan enters the transfer portal

I don’t get all of this Sully love. Was anyone really comfortable going into the season with him as the starter? He hasn’t won the job in his 3 years despite multiple opportunities. There is no such thing as a “presumed starter”. He is either the starter or he isn’t. Braun didn’t guarantee him the job, he elected to leave. He looked great in one way and looked awful in another. You don’t get guarantees with that. Just because you are in the program longer than anyone else at the position doesn’t mean you ascend to the throne. Just because you are a good kid doesn’t put you on the field!

I don't know if this is the place for this comment but I can definitely see where Lausch could beat out Sullivan with a new OC from SDSU. Isn't that offense more about options, running and short and intermediate passing? Sullivan was slow in my book and never saw a tackler he could avoid. If you believe the press Lausch is a better runner although I never saw anything in a game that evidenced that he was exceptional. Passing wise I suspect Lujan isn't counting on an accurate long passer particularly since a whole lot of NU's games will be played at a wind tunnel.
