All sorts of models that lots of people would’ve loved.

But the NCAA insisted on the nobody gets paid never and no you cannot have bagels with cream cheese as a snack that’s gotta be a meal and here we are.

Imagine the outrage a decade ago if we’d heard a $5k monthly stipend for players. What’s better? Oral contracts with no enforcement mechanism and no official tie to the school.

Somebody is going to figure out multi year deals soon, but I doubt you’ll ever see a promising football player graduate from the MAC or Sunbelt again. Oh well.
Agree it’s such a dramatic shift that the NCAA just seemingly washed it s hands of regulating. You get Harbaugh suspended for buying a kid a cheeseburger, that was just a few years back.

Are the Lions going to win the NFC North?

I was at this game last night. Great atmosphere. Thought to be possibly the biggest Lions home game in modern history. The stakes were so big - talk about the college playoff system, how do you have two 14-2 teams meet, tied for the best record in NFC, and the loser gets bumped from 1 seed, bye, home field advantage to 5 seed and playing wildcard round on the road? That needs to be rethought.

I have an idea. NIL money should be placed in more of a trust/deferred compensation and/or vesting situation that incentivizes athletes to stay. Also because how can you expect an 18-19 year old to understand and know how to handle that kind of money and contract. These kids are already getting a full ride inclusive of living expenses and health coverage. They could get the new revenue sharing money as a stipend for those who need more travel money for themselves or families, those small % who have kids or want to help other family. But the rest of the large NIL sums should be handled differently.

+/- for the Putrid Result at Purdue

This was a tough game to watch. I thought NU had a shot to win at Mackey. I thought Purdue wasn't as good as their press clippings. I thought we could guard Braden Smith. Wrong on all accounts.
I decided to use the entire game, right until the moment Gus Hurlburt took the court with 19 seconds to play.
I should mention that I tweaked the calculation slightly. A missed shot was reduced from -0.8 to -0.7. An offensive rebound was likewise reduced from 0.8 to 0.7. I looked at universal stats across the NCAA and it is fair to say that the offense grabs 30% of the available rebounds, so a missed shot isn't as bad as I thought. I also tweaked the way that "performance points" are netted across the team.

Did we learn anything from this game? I always have said that you learn more about your team from a loss than a win. In this case, it felt like we were flailing.
We couldn't handle Braden Smith - so apparently there are going to be times when we can't stop the opposing point guard from doing whatever he wants to do.
Our strategy in those games will be to hope the other team plays poorly.
This reality seemed to really aggravate Coach Collins, but we did nothing to change our fate. Color me unimpressed.
The benching of Nicholson and Berry to open the 2nd half struck me as unwise, almost petty. The team did not respond. In fact, Nicholson checked out.
We have had one (ONE) productive lineup all year. It was (and remains) the starting 5. For the record, that group fell behind 11-3 in the first 5 minutes and finished the game down 16-5 in exactly 6:25.
It was odd to see such a lack of confidence in a group that has performed so well this year.

On the other end of the spectrum, Keenan Fitzmorris got 9 straight minutes of action, entering the contest with Purdue leading 65-39. He played all of those minutes with Windham and Ciaravino. NU outscored Purdue 22-14 over that time. The whole thing could be considered garbage time, I suppose. Martinelli's +/- improved 7 points and Barnhizer's improved 6 points because of that stretch.

Looking forward, it is unclear how Ciaravino and Windham should/will be used. It seems like teams will do "what Purdue did" and use 3 guys to guard Barnhizer and Martinelli. Since they both like to score inside, this presents a problem with Nicholson on the offensive end. That problem has existed all year, with no sign of improvement. The fact is that Nicholson is not a threat to score when Martinelli and Barnhizer have the ball in the paint. Its a painful combination of Nicholson not knowing what to do and Barnhizer and Martinelli not being good post passers when they are looking to score (in my opinion). Will we work on solving this? Or just write off the Purdue game as an anomaly?

One other reality is that teams won't be guarding Mullins unless he makes a shot or two. So it seems like that will force Collins to take minutes from Mullins and give them to Ciaravino who has no problem putting the ball up - and seems to have a knack for scoring.

Lastly, I think there is a case to be made that Windham is probably our quickest player and probably our best ballhandler. He has not been intimidated in 2 road games against two excellent guards (Baldwin and Smith). He's erratic on offense, but his improvement is going to force decisions with Leach and Berry... I hope.

Jalen Leach played pretty well against Purdue. He just couldn't keep up with Smith, so Collins benched him too, eventually.

The possibility of a successful Windham/Ciaravino backcourt should not be ignored. They have had practically no playing time with Nicholson/Martinelli/Barnhizer, but I am very curious as to how that lineup would do.

So the target has changed....used to be " yeah I was on the football team at Milford High and got a scholarship at State U...had a great time, meet some great friends, got a diploma, worked my butt off in two a days....in 98 we beat Better State U...great experience, great memories"....wear your jersey around the neighborhood.... Now it is I need a path to the pros..one way or the other.
Just saw the Dylan Movie, these time They are changing, but this change happened at least 30 years ago.

Griffin Wilde - WR from S Dakota St

Does Lujan get any grace for it being his first season? Sometimes, it takes time for the team to adjust to a new offensive scheme
He made some bad, frustrating decisions, too. I suppose some of that is attributable to new school, new level FBS, odd mixture of talent and injuries, and he is still pretty young. But...a huge part of coaching is recruiting, and he's gotten a QB, a WR and a couple of good OLs.. For sure he deserves year two. Nowhere to go, but up

Purdue shines light on Northwestern's flaws in 79-61 defeat

There is no try. Only do.

I am sure there was effort. But the execution was abysmal.
I did not see a whole lot of Purdue specific tactics. I did not see the help defenders do anything different when Smith had the ball. I saw mistakes like going under the pick and roll on Smith.

On the other hand I did see the "Purdue is guarding Barnelli with 3 players". They executed this very well. Their players were very aware of what they had to do. Rarely we made them pay. Leach did briefly in the beginning of the game. The first or second posession of the second half exemplified this very well: the Purdue players were sagging and Leach (I believe) hits a wide open 3 pt shot.

I am not saying with all this we did not prep the game. Just, like you say, that the execution was atrocious. Players looked confused, lacking confidence. It's easy to see good prep and execution on the Purdue side when they are killing us and not seeing it on our when we are stinking so badly.

Kafka Bears

Bears request interview with Mike Kafka for HC position.

Feels like the Bears trying to interview OC candidates under the auspices of HC interviews. Kafka likely wants to get out from underneath Daboll, but has significant “coordinator in name only” experience having worked in the capacity under Reid and Daboll (who were both play-calling HCs). Ben Johnson+Mike Kafka could be quite interesting.
