Game Thread: Northwestern vs. No. 16 Michigan State

Thats a rather optimistic take!
I missed the first half of the game because I didn't bother to see what time we were playing. After the Purdue game, where we really had no answers on either end, I wasn't looking forward to facing the Spartans.
Defintley true. Some crazy bank shots went in, airballs went to their players directly etc…..was that the reason nu lost? No. Could it have accounted for 5-8 points in the first half? Yes.

Parking Sunday

The Evanston residents near the stadiums are total curmudgeons. Plenty of other homes located not in close proximity to a university and a sporting venue. Go find one of those! I’ve never seen anyone making noise or causing a problem when leaving the arena. Just people quietly walking back to their cars. All the homes around there have giant driveways and garages, so it is unlikely to affect their parking.

We really do have some absolute clown STHers, many of whom are rich but still have to squeeze every dollar out of their “investment” versus keeping those seats purple. Legit, it would be better to keep those seats vacant!
No doubt. I will say that winning the last two years has improved the problem although it still exists. I’ve had tickets about 8 years and it used to be worse. Possible solutions-
Offer sth an easy way to donate tickets to some locals.
Crack down on sellers by looking at who is in the seats consistently. Sounds difficult but not really difficult.
Monitor who is selling repeatedly via seatgeek.

I don’t think the school is interested in doing the work.

They got some good breaks, a few airballs went right to them for easy putbacks, a couple of ridiculous circus shots banked in… not complaining, that’s how the ball bounces sometimes. We just didn’t have an offense today, just putrid shooting even when we got good looks.

It sucks because you are a NU graduate. LOL. You’ll get to see a a win either way, but NU isn’t in the conversation.
Put it in context. There was a long time when ...

I was bet my house certain I would never see NU Purple in the Rose Bowl end zone.
Or see NU beat OSU.
Or Notre Dame.
Or Penn St.
Or Michigan.
Or have a player featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Or pound Iowa into submission, in Iowa City no less.
Or be a winning part of Instant Classics.
Or spend over a billion $$$ on state of the art football facilities.
Or win bowl games against SEC teams.
Or have multiple 1st round NFL draft choices.
Or have a HC that was viewed as a pillar in the profession.
Or meet and become friends with more than a few great NU fans.

Living through most of the Dark Ages gives you a lasting appreciation for the great seasons, the great people and the great moments,

Still, I remain disappointed that NU has anything less than an NIL program that is Top 5 in the country. Serious minimum salaries for all 1st year recruits. More for those who stand out. That's the NU future of playing to win in the BIG.

Sorry, the Wildside in recent years were pit bulls and carried the team by setting the tone for the arena. Even when opposing fans came in droves.

This year, not so much. What changed?
Let’s see what happens after a few wins, assuming some wins come. The students have been excellent for the last two seasons.

A Sunday at 11 is an eeeeeeaaaaarly game.

Going to games, whether football or basketball when NU gets their ass kicked is an unpleasant experience. Hearing “go white” in your left ear and “go green” in your right ear at a home game flat out sucks. My beef isn’t with the MSU fans that buy the prime seats. It’s with the STH that sells those prime seats. It embarrassing as a fan and today was extra bad.

The students would have got into if there was anything to get excited about, but the game was over 10 minutes into it. Why should they be the only people responsible for bringing energy. Just going to say it, a lot of our STH’s stink!

That was rough. Credit to Sparty for playing a great game: spreading the floor, isolating their guards (Fears is a really tough guy to stop on dribble penetrations) and taking advantage of the helps underneath. I thought they executed extremely well. It helps that they hit a few threes early (the only shot 8 all game).

What was the last straw to piss off Wilmette and Evanston?

This isn't the first construction project in the area in the last 20-ish years. But something obviously happened. The two towns have decided to draw a line in the sand. I somewhat don't blame them.

They even expanded some of the no parking areas since Christmas.
The concerts. Major issue for the surrounding residents.

The team isn't as good and it's a small school. At every other Big Ten school, they only need 5% (or less) of the students to keep the student section filled and energetic for every game. They can have a big drop in overall enthusiasm when their team is mediocre and still have enough diehards to have an intense crowd. We can't, and that'll always be the case. Just a numbers game.

Not following why it sucks. If OSU wins, my daughter and I are respectfully happy, and the ND family side is gracious. If ND were to win, my daughter and I will be disappointed, but happy for our loved ones. My greatest blessing in life is that we're a very tight knit family.

As for OSU pounding the Cats time after time, I got over that years ago.

Man, it sucks to be you GOUNU.

I hate get beaten like a drum every year by OSU and their condescending fans. I have no B1G pride and wouldn’t root for OSU unless they were playing Tennessee or Mississippi. Go Irish !!!!

I’m a season ticket holder. Defintley less opposing than in years past. They are always going to be there just given Evanston’s close proximity to a major city and the number of alumni from every school that see this as their only way to see a game. There were also tickets available to buy until just a few days ago, and the area behind the bench is usually available to buy online behind the visitors bench. Unfortunately the game wasn’t close and we home fans didn’t have much to cheer for and their fans were able to get into it. It would be nice if the school tried to cut down on sellers but I believe the school makes additional money for the tickets that are resold on the secondary market and they also prob don’t want to threaten season ticket holders that donate.

SI: OSU fans get confused, end up at Orange Bowl instead of the Cotton Bowl

So if you're buying tickets aren't you looking specifically for your team? You look for them in the bracket and see what game they're in. And wouldn't the tickets have the matchup when they were sent to you? This doesn't make complete sense. PennLive is pretty upstanding but I could see a PSU guy taking a shot on x.

I'm skeptical

Please change up this lineup for the love of God

Jalen and Ty to the bench with reduced minutes, KJ and Justin to the starting lineup with more minutes. If we are serious about actually trying to win this year we can’t do this same crap against Maryland. Try and win UGLY.
To what? The rotation has been 7 most of the year. In that 7, the trio of BigMatt, Ty, and Mullins provide next to no scoring. However, they happen to arguably be the three best defenders on the team. Gelo and KJ have already begun to see more minutes. They are improving by they aren’t Steph Curry at this point. You win ugly by playing your best defenders, not be inserting two Freshman that are below average on defense right now.

MSU’s bench outscored our entire team in the first half. If we don’t have production from at least 3 starters we are doomed. Every player on MSU was a legit threat to score. We don’t have that at any point in these games. Ever. There isn’t size in our lineup because none of our bigs can score. The hope is you can hit 3’s. So far that’s very inconsistent. If Ty, doesn’t score, it’s very difficult for us. I don’t see much of a choice but to roll with him as a starter. If he can’t throw it in the Ocean, there really isn’t an obvious counter move. I’m sure we will see more of KJ and Gelo earlier in the game if we flounder like today. A change to the starting line up would be surprising.
