Illinois obliterated by Maryland

Illini were missing Ivisic due to the flu, but Maryland absolutely destroyed them in Champaign tonight. Illinois looked completely out of sorts, and Maryland got anything they wanted inside. Reese had a career night, Maryland crushed them on fast break points and points off of turnovers.

Here's hoping they stay in their funk until Sunday.
White and Riley were sick, also. They were game time decisions. They played but were ineffective. No excuses for how they played, though.

Even worse for Illinois, Ivisic has mono and will be out for awhile. Illinois is not the same without the pick and roll game of Jakucionis and Ivisic. Ivisic opens up the floor for the rest of the team. Plus he is also their best rim protector. Really sucks but you have to keep going.

Illinois has only had its full lineup once in the last five games. KJ missed two games with injury. Then against MSU he only played 8 minutes. Now Ivisic. Against Indiana when they had everyone, they had IU down 30 in the first half.

NFL Lineman of the Year Award?

Totally should be. And I'd like to see a day where a lineman is the first guy holding the Lombardi Trophy next to the owner and coach for the cameras and the first media question should be, how did you flatten that guy so the back didn't even get touched?
Actually should be all 5 doing it because they do it as a team. Others are individuals but the OL is more of a unit where any weak link and the whole thing breaks down no mater how good an individual is

Barnhizer Shooting

If that ankle injury is still bothering him, even a little, it can absolutely mess with a jump shot especially when tired. These guys are practicing free throws after logging heavy minutes and hard practices. Fatigue shouldn't be a major factor there. He's just in a shooting slump right now. The good news is, he impacts the game in so many other ways. Barnhizer's too talented to let this shooting slump derail him. He'll figure it out.
He is also pretty beat up

Should it be "who would win?" or "who deserves it?"

An idea that I've seen floated that I really like as an alternative to any version of re-seeding: let conference champs or the top 4/8 seeds pick their opponents. Not only do I love the added drama there, but I think that would generally be the best way to preserve the "value" of CCGs and the regular season - I do think any version of playoffs need to specifically protect against locked-in teams benching their starters in the final 2-3 games of the regular season (although this doesn't address the initial question).

Should it be "who would win?" or "who deserves it?"

It is a mix picture on the top 4 seeds. Two clearly deserved the seeds (Georgia and Oregon). The other two only deserved to be in the playoffs. But all four seeds lost, so there is a question if a bye is a good thing.

With that said, I think conference champions should be rewarded. So, this is how I would change things.

1. Get rid of byes. Expand to 16 and guarantee the top 4 conference champions a home game. So, this year’s seeding (1-8) would be Oregon, Georgia, Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Boise State and Arizona State all with home games. The four additional teams would be Alabama, Miami, Ole Miss, and South Carolina but they would all jump Clemson. Boise State and Arizona State get promoted over Tennessee and Indiana.

2. Reseed after first round the remaining 8 teams. This allows the committee to use the first game of the playoffs to promote or demote teams based on performance.

3. For the four bowl games, allow the first three seeds the ability to choose the bowl in order of seeding. (Let’s just say the first 8 seeds won and the committee kept the order). Oregon would probably pick Rose Bowl vs Arizona State. Georgia chooses Peach vs Boise State. Then Texas picks Sugar against Ohio State. That leaves Penn State vs Notre Dame in Fiesta.

4. The committee reseeds again and the top seed gets to choose venue. Assuming Oregon and Georgia would have won with Ohio State and Notre Dame pulling the upset, Oregon would probably maintain the upper seed and pick the cotton bowl against Notre Dame. Georgia meets Ohio State in the Orange.

The outcome could have been the same, but it removes the issue of byes while still rewarding conference champs with a home game. Also, there would have been less crying about South Carolina beating out BYU for the last spot.
