NU 13 Miami 6 - game thoughts

There were a lot of mismatches on TV over the weekend but I was impressed with the creative play calling by some of the teams to counter the superior talent of the favored teams. A play that consistently worked was an RPO where the QB forced the DB covering the blocking receiver to make a decision of attacking the QB and releasing the WR/TE. The QB then dumped the ball to the WR for consistent gains. NU had a scramble where Wright did this on the play before NU's TD

Looked like Fitzball to me.

They also tried to find more aggression offensively, they just made too many mistakes. Still throwing the ball and stretching the field in the middle fourth quarter. Still need an identity to test the edges though.
I thought Himon would be an integral part of the 'O" but he was invisible. I watched a little bit of the Duke game. Duke's front 4 are athletic and aggressive. I hope NU tries to exploit this. Himon on screens, draws etc could be helpful.

Sullivan the better QB at IA scrimmage?

I appreciate your comments. I don't see anything where we really disagree.
I think "test optional" is completely asinine. Maybe we disagree about that.
My perception is that there is intense competition for the truly elite schools. I would put Northwestern in the lower tier of those schools.
Beyond that, it largely depends what program you are in, though UCLA and Michigan are still clearly "better" than Iowa or Clemson or whatever. You will find better students and better professors at the better schools, in general.

Its the value proposition that people are pushing back against. From that perspective, the elite schools are charging reasonable tuition, while most of the "good" schools are overpriced. "Why would I go to Boston College for $80k a year when I can go to Illinois for $35k (or whatever those numbers are).

Students who excel at "less than elite" universities will find fewer doors open to them. Its just something to overcome - plenty of people do it - and there is a growing awareness that those students tend to do very well in the real world.
This is exactly right. I have one daughter at the flagship state school (UGA) and a senior in high school who I hope will attend UGA (maybe Ga Tech if she got in). In no universe would we send her to Wake Forest or Vanderbilt (or NU for that matter) when we could send her to UGA for a fraction of the cost. We would make the sacrifice and send her to Harvard, Princeton Yale Stanford, but that’s about it.

McGarigle spent more time with Colby & JON than Hank.
Doubt McGarigle was learning anything from JON...

That looked nothing like JON's defenses.

Love that McGarigle was tutored by Hank. Looks like he learned well and I’m sure Braun’s influence only makes him better. How we didn’t elevate him to begin with instead of bringing in that disaster JON, I will never understand.

Fitz's long-term plan was always to make McGarigle DC here in all likelihood; the issue was just Hank retired a bit early for McGarigle to step in (hindsight being 20/20, yeah he should've just gone straight to McGarigle and skipped JON).

I think we lucked out getting Braun here last year to right the ship and properly re-orient the defense. That was critical imo for McGarigle to be able to take over this past offseason with the defense in a good place and with so many returning on that side of the ball.

Transition appears to have worked perfectly with the defense looked as good as it did in the 2nd half of last year.

JON was obviously a disaster but we ended up with Braun eventually as a result so talk about turning a big lemon into lemonade!
