B1G/SEC Bullies

On a side note, hearing NU being brought up more and more in the media (particularly sports talk radio) when it comes to programs that simply aren't competitive or may even be kicked out (the latter coming from National talking heads or those who focus on the B12, ACC, etc.) despite the Cats having had more top end success since 1995.

But having too many awful seasons (not to mention all those really bad losses) have negated all the good things the program has done over the past 3 decades.

B1G/SEC Bullies

From the scuttlebutt, it appears that the SEC will likely move to 9 conference games in addition to having a tie up with the B1G for OOC games.

The rationale behind getting 4 auto bids is that it returns focus on doing well in conference, with presumably the regular season champ and runner-up getting 2 of the auto bids with the other 2 being up for grabs in 2 play-in games (3rd seed vs 6, 4th vs 5th).

These moves maximize revenue (more big games which make the broadcasters happy) and further increase the gap with everyone else.

If this ends up being the case, would prefer it if the B1G doesn't expand and remains pat.

When things all come together, it'll be doable for the program to finish 6th or maybe even 5th and anything can happen in a play-in game.

Altho the Cats haven't had much success against the blue-bloods in the past 10-15 years and 2 of them will likely be the 3rd and 4th seeds most years.

OT: Illini botch Terrence Shannon jersey retirement ceremony 🤣

Overall it just is a silly Jersey retirement. Keep doing what they are doing, and there will be no numbers left to use. Jersey retirements are for true legends. I’m thinking about some of the flyin Illini, Dee Brown, Deron Williams, etc.

Only a matter of time until guys have jersey retired at 2-3 different schools.
Is it possible that they just don't want to have guys wearing the number 0?

I'm out

That was easy… $2,500 minimum donation for the West Lot and East Lot equivalents, >$1,000 for the next “level” beyond that: https://goldengopherfund.com/assets/pdf/fb-parking-map-2025-10-17.pdf

Note that that’s the minimum and I would imagine there’s a “reverse auction” of some type where higher donations get priority.

I’ve said it a number of times: NU fans have literally no idea how cheap NU football has been for years.

Parking and Stadium Seating are two very different things.

I will continue to roll my eyes at anyone here insisting on comparing NU's emerging ticket pricing strategy to any other B1G team - the difference in demand is fundamentally gargantuan.

Parking is a completely different story. The East and West Lots will be in demand for even the least attended games. I always personally acknowledged we were spoiled with golf course parking - a short walk to the stadium for $30 with tailgating on grass. It was a beautiful thing and I will miss it, regardless of where I land. I always prioritized South Golf Lot over East and West Lots.

My fear is the loss of the North & South Golf Lots represents a direct hit to our previous game day experience - easy affordable parking and tailgating, that is probably a difference maker to older and fairweather fans...and we have an abundance of both. People can crow all they want about how this isn't any different from other Big Ten programs/stadiums...that doesn't make the long schlep from the brown to red to purple lines on a non-rush hour Saturday schedule more palatable for someone who might already be on the bubble about renewing.

I *do* think a lot of this could be mitigated by an even slightly improved shuttle operation, which I always remember being a nightmare - school buses being loaded/unloaded by what appeared to be high school kids completely disinterested in getting things organized. I never minded tailgating on campus in the pre-golf lot era...but dealing with the shuttles was pretty frustrating.

I dunno; the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL have been around like hogs for generations and ... they've just gotten fatter.

Something tells me this ends up the same way.
Those leagues are professional leagues where the players are professionals paid by the teams, whereas the Big Ten and SEC are conferences of SCHOOLS with teams made up of students who have to go to class and are paid for their name, image, and likeness by third-party entities not funded by the schools.
