FOOTBALL How Northwestern's lakefront stadium went from a dream to reality

@lou v and I report on how Northwestern's temporary lakeside football facility came to be from a text from Pat Fitzgerald years ago, a new design proposal breathing new life into the project, the trustees and administrators involved to make it financially feasible to the project's announcement and impact the next two seasons.

May 4th Tailgate in the West Lot!

Hey Gang,

We wanted to let everyone on the Boards know about an effort in the works by NU Alumni to organize a WNRS Weekend--Women's Non-Revenue Sports--Tailgate in the West Lot of (the ashes of) Ryan Field on May 4th!

The tailgate will start at 9am, ahead of the 1pm Softball game against Indiana and, fingers crossed, the Big Ten Lacrosse Tourney Final for NU at 4:30pm.

We are really hoping to pull in as many folks as possible! If you've always wanted to do a football-style tailgate in the Spring, or you want one last chance to tailgate in the Old West Lot, now's the time! Let's do it up!

Thanks,
Sam, John, and Scuzz/The West Lot Pirates

The cost of NIL

From an Athletic article about Ohio State retooling through NIL:

Two years ago, Day told an audience of businesspeople it would take $13 million in NIL money to maintain Ohio State’s roster. Today, it’s believed the budget is even higher than that.

“We had a lot of people step up and really help us,” said Day. “Gene (Smith) is obviously instrumental in this, but I made a lot of calls, and a lot of people stepped up. It just goes to show you how great the support here is.”

We want OSU ON THE MISTAKE BY THE LAKE! (RIP Chesty)

Dear *uckeyes,

First, allow me to introduce myself with a Hearty **** you’

Do not hope for Soldier Field or Wrigley.

We’re going to play you on the fearsome shores of Lake Michigan in front of 6,000 angry fans in purple.

Braun will outcoach Ryan all Day.

AND WE! WILL! WIN!! C’MONINYEAHA!

P.S. “Saving Silverman” was one of Matt “Chesty” Ulrich’s favorite movies. He was a big part of the 2004 team that beat OSU. I have a feeling that he’ll be watching from the clouds when dOSU rolls into town with their toothless smiles and foul body odor.

That last phrase was a quote from SS.

Please donate to Chesty’s family here! Let’s get it over $100K for #64, his widow, and his four sons.

Northwestern family ties run deep for four-star 2026 TE Mack Sutter

@lou v talked to four-star 2026 TE Mack Sutter, whose father, uncle and cousin played at NU, about finally getting an offer from the Wildcats and his relationship with the program under a new staff.

FB RECRUITING The next few weeks…

Are going to be interesting. With Spring practices in full swing look for a ton of activity as programs share the harsh reality to many of their lower tiered players.

“The spring transfer portal officially opens on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, and closes on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, giving just 15 days for players to enter the portal.”

Teams will be able to host transfer prospects during the transfer period.

Curious to see who (if any) from NU enters the portal. Also have my eye on a certain NDSU QB.

Priority for Seats in Lakefront Stadium

I dug a bit to find this:

How will priority for 2023 STH holders be determined? Seat selection priority for 2023 STH will be based on longevity as a Football Season Ticket Holder or current year Wildcat Fund giving level, with Purple Points determining priority within selection groups. To increase your priority for the selection process, please visit supporthecats.com or call 847-467-4321.

Seems the 40 years of consecutive season tickets are finally gonna pay off!

FB RECRUITING Northwestern 'definitely up there' for three-star safety Alijah Jones

Northwestern recently offered Alijah Jones, a safety from Archbishop Spaulding in Severn, Md. For context, they are in the same conference that Anto Saka played in when he was in high school for Loyola Blakefield. I talked to Jones about the offer and his recruitment.
