Game thread for Northwestern @ No. 21 Duke

Northwestern (1-1) hits the road to play No. 21 Duke (2-0) at 2:30 p.m. CT in Durham, N.C. The game will air on the ACC Network.

Duke leads the all-time series 12-10, and has won the last four games in the series. While the Blue Devils have had the advantage, their margins have been slim. Their last two wins over the Wildcats came by seven and eight points respectively.

Trib Garbage - Slow News Day?

Trib article/headlne in my inbox:

Northwestern welcomes freshmen to campus after spending summer dealing with athletics program hazing scandal

(from the sports desk)

The writer basically used the zero-news (and less than zero SPORTS news) event of freshmen arriving to campus as a platform to recap NU's athletic issues over the past couple of months (complete with links to all stories).

I'm just baffled how this made it past an employed editor with any sense for news. Fluff piece of "Little Joey got dropped off at Northwestern today to start college...the Big Ten school embroiled in athletic controversy."

I couldn't shake my head harder in total disgust.

FOOTBALL Fearless Forecast: Northwestern at No. 21 Duke

Northwestern is on the road this week to face their toughest test of the season: No. 21 Duke. The Wildcats have lost four straight in the series with the Blue Devils and aim to pull off the upset to snap two streaks in two weeks. Here are our predictions for this Saturday's game.

I talked with Jack Lausch this morning after practice, check out my profile on his path to Northwestern, his game against UTEP and the rest of this season.

NU @ DU Prediction Thread

So heading into Week 3, there is basis for some optimism among Cats fans after an explosive 2nd Half against UTEP. UTEP is not top competition, but performing at the level one would expect from a Power 5 school in a non-conference game is a significant step forward from last season.

The test coming up this week is daunting. Duke has had NU's number for years, in good years and in bad. Duke is riding a #21 ranking and is heavily favored at home with a very warm forecast for Durham.

Payback is overdue but will be a tall order. I will pick the Cats and the upset, but it is more hope than realism.

A rare moment of perfect execution

Before the Duke game becomes the object of post mortems, I wanted to just give a shout out to everyone involved in Himon’s long TD reception last Saturday. The call put the ball into an area UTEP had ceded, as they were in a 3rd and long 3-3-5 defense. Hilinski’s timing was excellent, leaving every defender with at least one blocker. The blocks were executed without penalty, and Himon read the blocks to get his path to the end zone. The old cliche is that every play is designed to score a TD if everyone does what they are supposed to. In this case everyone did.
This highlight compilation has both the sideline and end zone views starting at 14:52. I think watching the 2 views really demonstrates how perfect the execution was on this play.
