Torvik metrics now added to team sheets used for NCAA selection

More CBB related that specifically NU hoops related - interesting to see that they're adding the Bart Torvik metrics to the team sheets. He builds off of the kenpom data to identify other predictive metrics like "T-Rank" (more detail here, but in short has more of a recency bias as well as discounts blowouts), as well as "Wins Above Bubble" (team rating based on how many more wins it has over an average "bubble team").

WLP Big Ten Summer Previews - Oregon

Quack.

This is probably the Best Team in the Big Ten. It might be the best team in the Nation.

We can't speak to what the Oregon Ducks will look like 5 years from now...but the team rolling into the Big Ten in 2024 has no weaknesses. Think 2023 Michigan.

Awesome coaching, talent everywhere...just be glad we don't play these new fellas from Eugene.

Northwestern takes a swing for 2026 four-star S Marcello Vitti

I talked to 2026 four-star safety Marcello Vitti about his offer from Northwestern, his relationship with AHC/S Harlon Barnett and where the Wildcats stand in an already national recruitment.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

That's the sound of the Big Ten Schedule Makers backing the bus over the corpse of the UCLA Bruins one more time, just to make sure.

HOLY. CRAP. This schedule would be a nightmare just based on the air miles alone...but it feels like this mediocre UCLA team, breaking in a whole new coaching staff, has to play just about every good team in the NATION, let alone the Big Ten.

YIKES.

Heading out of town

Just a heads up that I am heading out of town on vacation from July 5-21. This one is a big adventure: Malaysia and Thailand. So not only will I be on vacation, but I’ll also be 13 time zones away.

Luckily, you will have @mshelton33 running the show, and he will be ably assisted by @mikefitz77. So you are in very good hands.

Besides, it’s mid-July in college football. What could possibly happen? 😉

OT: the sport of cycling and the Tour

As a youngster growing up I played most sports- football, basketball, baseball but the most grueling was cycling which I participated in both road and track. I was terrible but gave it a try. I did enjoy riding with my local AYH club and rode around a little as a freshman at NU.

I believe the only other sport that may approach cycling for endurance and burning calories is cross country skiing. Watching the Tour de France it’s amazing what these riders can do, esp. climbing and descending mountains. I’ve always enjoyed watching the Tour and the beautiful French countryside and historical ruins the cyclists pass by. Just a colorful event I’ve enjoyed watching for decades now. A real classic up there with any other major sporting event.

Northwestern publishes report by Loretta Lynch on culture of athletics

Bart Torvik 2025 Projections

Bart Torvik released his 2025 projections. You can edit the NU roster to see how it affects the projections, too.

His current projections have Northwestern ranked 55th in the nation and 14th in the expanded B1G, but that doesn't account for Nicholson and Berry returning.

When you add Berry and Nicholson back to the roster the Cats move up to 27th overall. If you add Blackmon then they move up to 25th.

Fun tool to play around with, and good to see the models like this returning roster.

Hey Gang! We're Back!

It's Summer Preview time, and Lordy do we have a bunch of these to crank out.
We're kicking things off with the USC Trojans, who we last saw in the Keyshawn Johnson era in a little game some of you might remember;)

USC has a lot to work out in the post Caleb Williams era, but a massive coaching addition from across town and a fairly favorable cold-weather-free schedule ought to get the Trojans squared away in our conference fairly quickly.

Ten Questions: 1. Can the defense be elite?

The first question of our Ten Questions preseason series is: Can the defense be elite?

The Wildcats return experience and depth across their defense, but they'll need to integrate new play callers, on and off the field, quickly before they hit the difficult home stretch of their schedule.

Bears filling in for the Mojo Moose

Hopefully the recent Bear Sightings will be as portentous of good things ahead for the Wildcats as the Moose have been.

At the beginning of last month it was a Brown Bear Encounter as this Grizzly came directly at me and got within an arms length with only a chicken wire-like fence separating us:

Then at the end of the month, just prior to departing China from Beijing and after having climbed the Great Wall of China and taking in the Forbidden City in Beijing, it was a Panda Bear that came up and approached me:

Finally this evening, back here at home, I was out watering the lawn in the front yard when a Black Bear walked in front of me, stopped and starred me down, and then began to climb the wall of the neighbor's house before climbing steps to a front door and then climbing back down before circling back.
Fortunately at that point, instead of coming at me, the bear turned and headed to a back yard. This time there was no barrier of any kind and the door behind me had inadvertently locked and I was without a key. There was no alternative than to stand my ground:
