It wasn't quite that on-the-nose, but the sentiment was there and it highlights the major differences in this squad that point to the route for this program to be more consistently where everyone wants it to be.
None of the players on this squad were top 100 recruits, but they play hard together. After several years wandering in the wilderness, this team has an identity that makes sense for its recruiting profile. It has returned to playing hard-nosed defense led by players who have been developed in the program for multiple years. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts and, lo and behold, the individual players are getting their shine, too.
Beating Minnesota like a drum is no massive accomplishment this season, but this week has been impressive in the way the team handled business in a poised and mature fashion. Not every week is going to be like this one, but Coach Collins deserves major kudos for unlocking the potential of this group. Now the challenge is building a consistency in the program (both in terms of recruiting and play) that feeds this identity.
