2-4. Big win. Need to get to 11-9.

MD hoops fans are crazy. The axes are out for Willard but they have no $ to fire him, buy him out and hire a new guy.

There is an underlying belief by Maryland fans that they should be an elite program and win all but the bluest of blueblood games. The truth is the history is good but not that good, particularly in the last decade - but hope springs eternal. Losing the last three to NU? Big time unacceptable. However, I don't think Willard is on the hot seat. They had a great class and have a ton of talent.

Fitzmorris

Did a nice job today. I think the back-up center job should be his to lose. He has 6 blocks this year in 5 or 6 games. Hunger has 1 block and 1 steal this year. That’s hard to do. You almost have to be trying to avoid the ball.
Definitely improving in the second half. Gets caught high way too much and isn’t quick enough to prevent lay ups. It looked like a lay up line in the first half when he flashed high. On offense, he makes Hunger look like Bill Walton. Most enthusiast guy we’ve had in forever and seems to be a favorite of his teammates. Let’s hope he continues to get better as those two monsters on Michigan are forces.

Postgame press conference

Just some things I personally enjoyed from that press conference. First, Collins’ humor after an emotional win was top-notch. Now, I’ll be honest, my initial take was to start Ty with a short leash, but Coach Collins knows these guys better than anyone. He’s got a pulse on this team, and I’ll always defer to his judgment. Even when Ty’s shot isn’t falling, he’s still playing smart basketball, and teams still respect his three-point range. When that shot starts dropping, though? This team’s a different animal.

And the shoutout to Brian James again. We’ve heard it a lot, but those drawn-up plays, especially in key moments, make a difference. Let’s not forget the talk about the basketball gods. Tough calls at the end of multiple games, sure, but it’s part of the game. You gotta keep your head and trust the process. Now, I can’t leave out the Twitter drama before the game. When it came up, it had Brooks and Martinelli cracking up.

Lastly, Brooks talked about the frustration of his freshman year. He was hurt, struggling with his minutes, but he didn’t quit. He kept working, talked it out with BMac, and now he’s an All-B1G caliber player. That grind-it-out mentality is the backbone of this team. They don’t quit, they don’t back down, and they play HARD.

Great win last night. Keep that fire burning. Go Cats!

Takeaways: Martinelli hits buzzer-beater to nip Maryland in OT

Matt, nice write up, but this line is incorrect: “Martinelli's shot marked Northwestern's third straight win in overtime at home this season, and their fifth straight if you tack on wins over No. 1 Purdue and No. 10 Illinois last season.”

The Cats lost to Purdue in OT at West Lafayette last year after beating them in Evanston..
I read his line to mean 5 straight OT at HOME

Game Thread: Northwestern vs. Maryland

They’ve had some good lines. The Ben Gay Icy Hot banter was clever.
They had some good lines but overall Bardo was just brutal to listen to. Totally not objective and just poor analysis the whole way through. It seemed like nearly every foul call on either side I was just thinking “you seriously must not be watching the same replay that your camera just showed.” Pretty disappointing given how good of a game it was. I’m not sure if he’s over the hill, or just… bad at his job.

PS the refs tonight were not perfect of course but I thought they did a good job. Especially toward the end they made the decision to just not call a foul unless it was egregious and they were consistent on both sides of the play. I appreciated that, and I bet the players did too.

2-4. Big win. Need to get to 11-9.

(PS I can’t wait to go into Maryland and beat them again against their whiny, soft, spoiled fan base. I don’t know why but I feel quite confident that game is one win we can count on coming home in the final stretch. We are just better than them.

And I know @Washington and @Minnesota might appear to be worse teams on paper, but given both those matchups are on the road honestly @Maryland seems like the easiest win left on our schedule.)
