What if Collins ...

Sounds like the O'Connor book gives JournCat the best source in this thread.

I always thought it was Capel or Wojo who would have the upper hand for the gig before CC. I thought both were more highly regarded when they took over more established programs.

I still can't believe Duke did the inexperienced, in-house roll of the dice with such an established program. How many missteps have incredible programs taken in the last 30 or 40 years with the in-house guy? How many incredible programs in the last 30-40 have made such a smooth transition from previous greatness? It's really to be admired.

And in my most meatball way, I absolutely hate that the Duke thing has continued on.

So the first round is complete

It pains me to say this but it felt to me IN kind of deserved to get in. They were putrid for the talent they had, I dislike them as much as anyone here, but it felt they had the numbers to get in.

I mean I’d rather the metrics somehow benefited those mid majors that stumbled but, under the current guidelines they use I think IN should have been in.

Is there another recent year no B1G team played a first round as the lower seed in a game?
Last time was 2018, the Allstate season. Only 4 teams made the tourney and none lower than a 5 seed.

A question of semantics….

Words mean things, but often they are used judiciously to avoid telling the complete truth. Technically Jacob Schmidt is in charge of the NU collective (TrueNU) and the university has no official connection to it. But the whole truth is that money comes to TrueNU with the full understanding that it will be spent as Coach Braun, Coach Collins and the other coaches and NU athletic department folks direct.

The point is that NU officials determine where the money goes, not Rob Padder at Evanston Subaru or whoever.
Just think if every school’s “independent” NIL collective were run by someone with the same name as the guy who runs NU’s. Whenever the recruits went out, the people would always shout.

The law and the tax man care a lot. Words mean things and these distinctions are important.

OT: Wow, what a mess at Stanford

College sports will be a healthier place when we reach an endgame of a football superconference (maybe with Premier League-style relegation and elenOvation?) and a return to regional conferences for everything else.

No.

San Diego State 7’ freshman in the portal

Hmm, I seem to remember that not too long ago SDSU had all but told the MWC that it was going to be joining the Pac-12 Conference (when it was still a P5), so they sure seemed to think of themselves as Power Conference-level at that time.
Yes the PAC-12 conference rebuild has been a failure so far. The Mountain West had 4 teams in the big dance (none are left). The Aztecs continue to do well under Dutcher but the MW conference and individual programs are struggling to raise money. On the other hand, my other school UC San Diego made its first big dance appearance and played well. Their program has steadily moved up over the years.

Yeah, Oklahoma and Texas had no business being in, I would much rather see spots to go to smaller conference second place finishers or regular season conference winners that stumbled in their conference tournament. I didn’t look this up, so I could be wrong, but it didn’t seem like there were as many upsets in conference tourneys resulting in bid stealers. Just saying OSU and Indiana were putrid too and had no business being in. This isn’t going to stop without a rule requiring a minimum conference record for a bid and we all know that will never happen.

San Diego State can’t compete against programs in the large conferences like the BigTen with lots of money.

On Monday, they learned their 7-foot NBA prospect Magoon Gwath is gone into the transfer portal. Think he will be looked at by some BigTen programs.

This Aztecs freshman is a top prospect who is moving on. He’s injury-prone so his future career may be in question though he will be recruited by top programs. The reality is that lesser monetized programs like San Diego State can’t compete against programs in the large conferences like the BigTen with lots of money. SDSU has been a frequent flyer in the big dance under coach Dutcher (and Coach Steve Fisher prior). I believe Gwath might be a good fit for a BigTen program (don’t know about his academics.) He needs to bulk up but he has a lot of upside potential if he can stay healthy.

BTW- amazing finish to the Colorado State / Maryland game. The MD freshman made an amazing bank shot to win the game just before the final buzzer. I thought CSU had it in the bag with under 4 seconds left. Clutch play!
